| Book Review: The New Rules of Marketing and PR 2007-09-18 06:25:00 There are two kinds of readers who won't like David Meerman Scott's The New Rules of Marketing & PR; fortunately for the author, both groups are small. The first is that small group of ahead-of-the-curve web marketers and PR professionals who have already figured out how to integrate online efforts between optimized news releases, blogs, social media sites, podcasts and all of the other content distribution and promotional tools now available online (though the ranks of this group will be swelled by the readers of David's book). The second group is the diminishing number of old-school PR and marketing practitioners, those who still believe that press releases are only for the media, that you have to interrupt people with your marketing message to get their attention, and that campaigns aren't real unless they are on TV. This book explodes their old view of the world. Scott performs two important services with this book, one tactical and one strategic. Tactically he pulls togethe |

The study is designed to help online marketers set PPC and SEO budgets, forecast results, test online marketing programs, and even (toughest of all)—explain search marketing plans to your client or CEO.Among the key findings: Search marketing continues to grow at an incredible pace, with spending up 39% globally in 2007. A third of respondents anticipate double-digit spending increases on both SEO and Google PPC programs in 2008. Marketers rate SEO second and search engine marketing (PPC) ads third in terms of ROI, behind only house-list email marketing. Online banner ads and print advertising receive the lowest grades for ROI. The return on PR spending is viewed as the most difficult to measure. Thinking of bringing SEM and SEO in-house? Nearly a third of corporate respondents said that finding talente |

| Breaking news in affiliate marketing industry 2007-09-06 08:37:41 Rakuten USA, the US division of the Japan headquartered Rakuten, has purchased CauseLoyalty.com. Shaking the corporation tree for those who aren’t aware, Rakuten USA owns LinkShare and CauseLoyalty owns SchoolPop and OneCause.
I’ll go into why this may not be such a good thing for Linkshare (think conflict of interest). However, this is the second time LinkShare has acquired one of its affiliates. In June of this year, LinkShare acquired TrafficStrategies.com. The M&A activity in this industry has been heating up recently as ValueClick has made similar acquisitions, most notably the purchase of PriceRunner and MeziMedia. Google is buying Performics, the #3 affiliate network owned by DoubleClick.
The SchoolPop announcement is unbelievable. Here’s why. Vesdia Corporation, the previous owner of SchoolPop, acquired the program years ago in an effort to build up their portfolio of affiliate rewards programs. To date, SchoolPop remained Vesdia’s crown jewel (and it |
| Market Penetration and Niche Marketing 2007-09-04 13:51:00 In any industry, it would be the ideal dream of all people to be able to become the market leader in the industry they are catering to. But in most cases as well, most organizations have toface reality that to become a market leader entails a lot of investment, most of which are financial aids and time. Entering a market for the very first time, despite tons of knowledge and strategies does not necessarily mean that any organization or person for the matter will become an overnight success. A curing time to allow market awareness and soliciting consumer feedback and probable acceptance will still be keys to the success of any business related endeavor. For most wise market strategists, a careful evaluation and study of the market that they are planning to penetrate is in order. Doing the necessary research work, planning procedures and mapping out their various strategic planning measures will be put to the ultimate test. Regardless of what industry it is, an immediate decision to get i |
| Marketing gets saucy: HP 2007-09-03 09:28:00 Today's award for marketing hyperbole goes to HP Foods, maker of HP Sauce. According to the label on the bottle, HP Sauce is a "legendary and uniquely distinctive taste sensation" and also "everyone's favourite".I love this for a number of reasons.1. Everyone's favourite. Just not true.2. Legendary. I'm not aware of any legends surrounding HP Sauce. If anyone else does, please let me know as I would love to hear them.3. Taste sensation. Not just a taste but 'a taste sensation'! This sounds impressive, but remember that sensations can be unpleasant as well as pleasant. (I think HP Foods is hoping for association with 'sensational'.)4. Uniquely distinctive. If it is unique, surely it is also distinctive. Or does HP Foods mean the sauce is distinctive in a way that no other distinctive taste sensation is distinctive? Perhaps - but what does that mean?(Incidentally, the HP website says the firm has been "providing the nation's sauce solutions for over 100 years" - one for Private |

| Charities using mobile marketing 2007-08-29 09:09:56 The Non-Profit Times just announced in their weekly newsletter that a few non-profits are starting to use mobile marketing to communicate with consumers. The amazing thing is that it is not limited to text messaging.
They refer to this initiative as the new-age affinity credit card that rocked the credit card market about 20 years ago. Only a few of the largest non-profits adopted their own affinity credit card, however, due to the large membership numbers required to make the program profitable for the card companies. With mobile marketing, any size organization can benefit.
The major benefits are pretty clear from a loyalty perspective:
-Stay in touch with donors more frequently
-Attract and appeal to younger donor base
-Customized phones branded with non-profit logos
-Phone software chock full or customized ring tones and news
Practically speaking, I’m not sure how many people are going to adopt these phones, since it’s hard for people to decide which charity to choose a |
