Edwards, Health Care And The "Sensible Center"
I’ve been pondering this column from Cokie and Steve Roberts that was reprinted in the Bucks County Courier Times Tuesday partly because I don’t know what they’re trying to accomplish here. Are they trying to seriously inform anyone as to the different positions on the issue of health insurance presented by each candidate for president from either party (as the New York Times did here last Sunday with this excellent editorial)? No.Are they trying to tell us about real-life stories of people who’ve experienced some of the horror of our profit-driven private care, where fewer and fewer people are covered? No (after all, the Robertses live in the accountability-free zone of pundit land, which is located primarily in the Beltway but also other regions, particularly in the South – they do throw in a lot of polling data that is supposed to impress us, though).Well then, let me share some of what they have to say here and maybe I’ll come up with an answer. Here is an excerpt…Take
Protecting Yourself and Your Baby - Teen Pregnancy and Health Risks
Teen pregnancy and health risks to both mother and infant are unfortunately closely related. In general, infants born to adolescent mothers are at a higher risk of accidental injury and poisoning, complications of prematurity, learning disabilities and cognitive problems, minor acute infections, sudden infant death syndrome. Also, rates of premature birth and low birth weight are higher among teenage mothers. Teen pregnancy and health risks go hand in hand in girls 14 years old and younger because of an underdeveloped pelvis which can lead to difficulties in the childbirth process. In industrialized nations, this situation can be resolved with a Cesarean section. In developing nations, however, which have high rates of adolescent pregnancy, medical services are scarce and problems during childbirth can lead to eclampsia, obstetric fistula, infant mortality, or maternal death. Another reason that teen pregnancy and health risks are closely associated is due to lack of knowledge of prope
Petaflops for health
Most people are probably familiar with SETI@Home and similar initiatives that use spare CPU cycles on networked commodity PCs (both in the office and at home) to deliver what effectively amounts to a very large-scale parallel computing facility. The Folding@home initiative - which uses the same technique to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases - is going one step further, using the streaming processors now more common in consumer electronics such as games consoles. This advance utilizes streaming processors now common in inexpensive consumer electronics, such as the Cell processor in Sony’s PlayStation 3  or personal computers with Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) from ATI, to achieve performance previously only possible on supercomputers. With this new technology, we are able to attain performance on the 100 gigaflop scale per computer, at a very modest cost (~$500). Thus, armed with this new technology, we are setting out on a new initiative to take Fo
Solving the Health Care Crisis
Hillary Clinton has unveiled her solution to the health care crisis. Like all the other politician's plans, it amounts to nothing more than problem management. Everybody talks about making health insurance more affordable from a cost standpoint, but nobody talks about making it affordable from an income standpoint. Health care costs are definitely out of control in America, but part of the reason it is hard to afford is because people and businesses aren't earning enough money. If we can raise the income of those who can't afford health insurance and at the same time reduce costs we have a much better chance of solving this problem. Even if the health care industry was made non-profit there would still be many businesses and millions of people unable to afford it.As long as this is the case the financial burden will fall on our government. Part of solving this health care crisis must include reducing the cost to government, or more appropriately put, reduce the cost
Remember When Hillary Said Her Socialized Health Plan Wasn't Socialized? Well, It Is.
Take the poll at the top right of this page ... UPDATE: Will you be punished if you refuse to enroll in Hillary's new socialist health plan? Many of you will remember when Hillary was asked by black journalists about the negative effects of her socialized health plan on the black community ... she responded by saying: "I have never advocated socialized medicine. That has been a right-wing
Barbour Responds To Eaves Health Care Plan
John Arthur Eaves had this write up in this Clarion-Ledger this morning where he attempted to explain his health care plan, but as this Barbour release shows- there are more than just a few questions that are still unanswered. THE EAVES SCHEME DOESN’T ADD UP Costs more, hurts middle class, breaks budget Today, the Barbour for Governor campaign pointed out that the health care scheme that John Arthur Eaves, Jr. gave to the Clarion Ledger just doesn’t add up. The Clarion Ledger reports, “Eaves’ plan estimates that if 146,000 children enrolled, it would cost taxpayers $28 million every year.” Although the Eaves campaign has not released publicly the details of the plan, it is obvious the scheme would cost Mississippi taxpayers at least $100 million more than what Eaves claims. According to the press report, the Eaves scheme builds on the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP) and Medicaid with the cost of the program paid for by individuals through monthl
Clinton's "American Health Choices Plan" = $110 billion per year
Bring it on. I am all for everyone's basic right to health care. With a price tag of about $110 billion per year, Clinton's "American Health Choices Plan" represents her first major effort to achieve universal health coverage since 1994, when the plan she authored during her husband's first term collapsed.Mrs. Clinton’s purpose, they said, is not only to cover the 47 million people who are uninsured but to improve the quality of health care and make insurance more affordable for those who already have it.The goal of Mrs. Clinton’s plan, to be outlined in a speech in Des Moines, is similar to that of the ill-fated plan that she and President Bill Clinton pushed in 1993 and 1994. But advisers to Mrs. Clinton, a Democrat from New York, said Saturday that she would try to avoid the perception that she was advocating a bureaucratic, big-government solution. That perception, promoted by conservative Republicans and the insurance industry, sank the Clinton plan in 1994.Be sure to stop
During Pregnancy, Diet Health, Men's Weight and Omega-3 Fundamental Power
Pregnancy is a family affair. What the expectant mother does affects everyone else in the household. The interesting fact is that during pregnancy, diet health, mens health and Omega-3 essential nutrients are all integral components of the plan to produce a health baby. Let's face it- it's tough to stick to a healthy diet if others around you are eating whatever they want and everything you shouldn't have. None of us are impervious to temptation. But during pregnancy, diet health, mens health and DHA Omega-3 nutrients can help any woman have a successful nine months. The added benefit is that if your husband or significant other follows a pregnancy diet, he too will get the many benefits from eating healthy. That is the power of a good diet no matter the circumstance. Packing a Lifetime Wallop DHA Omega-3 are polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are not produced by the body, rather are obtained through food. For men and women during pregnancy, diet health, mens health and t

Autism Fad Treatments On The Rise With the number of reported autism cases skyrocketing, fad treatments for the developmental disability like special diets and use of nutritional supplements are becoming more pervasive, according to experts from Ohio State University. Sai Baba’s failing health
On this photo from a year or so ago, there is already a decidedly ga-ga look on Sai Baba’s face. Instead of the usual, where he cuts the ribbons, he is ‘assisted’ (he is actually holding onto the hand of his helper!). Likewise, videos also show him unable to cut his birthday cakes any longer.  Rumours that he is non compos mentus have become yet more persistent, having begun with accounts of his apparently senile behaviour already three years ago (including one from a recently-disaffected US resident in India who had been editing some of the Puttaparthi magazine ‘Sai Impressions’). He was heard to be giving instructions about events that were not scheduled and never took place, talking confusedly and sometimes garbling his words. It is Mrs. Geetha Reddu, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister who is doing the honours of inagurating the tourist complex in the above photo. No longer is Sai Baba against ’spiritual tourism’ - as was so stro
LifeSpring Health gains distribution for new rewards card
LifeSpring Health recently announced a partnership with National City, a prominent commercial and retail banking and mortgage finance provider in the Midwest, to provide its LifeSpring Health rewards Visa card to National City customers. This is a great announcement for LifeSpring Health because they are starting to gain consumer distribution channels for their rewards credit card. The card, referenced in a previous post, found here, allows shoppers to earn reward points that can be used for Health Savings Accounts (HSA), insurance premiums, health services, prescriptions, elective medical procedures, gym memberships, and wellness products. LSH has a great card program, especially in today’s day and age of rising health-care costs. National City can only benefit from pushing customers to the LSH card because it costs them nothing and probably involves some type of revenue sharing based on the interchange revenue collected by LSH on each transaction. LSH wins from this deal becaus
Mental Health Professionals Donate Hour To Veterans
About 550 mental health professionals around the nation have joined the “Give An Hour” program which entails having them donate an hour of their time each week to assist current military, veterans, family members or reservists in need of mental health assistance. This is certainly a nice gesture, but it speaks to more fundamental issues. [...]
