| | Run for Your Health! 2007-10-22 12:36:17 If you plan to lose weight, running is a great way to burn some calories. While you`re running your body burns about one hundred calories per mile.
Running is a benefic activity for anyone, regardless of the fitness level or age. First of all, make time in your schedule for this kind of workout. For beginners, twenty minutes a day, three times a week should be enough. If you consider this too much, take walking breaks.
For example, start by running for four minutes and walk for one minute. As your resistance increases you could give up the walking breaks or even increase the time spent running.
You don`t have to be concerned about the equipment. Running requires only a pair of running shoes (not tennis, walking, or cross-training shoes), a digital sports watch, a well-fitted sports bra for ladies, and a heart-rate monitor that helps you maintain the effort at a normal level.
If you don`t know how hard you should work, the “talk test” may help. Since working out prevents bone loss during voluntary weight loss, calorie deprivation should be combined with exercising in order to achieve a balance between losing weight and preserving the bone, according to Dl. Villareal.
Over a one-year time period, nineteen people followed a calorie-restricted diet, another nineteen ate as usual but engaged in regular workout, and ten people from the control group only followed a healthy lifestyle. The results showed a weight loss of about eighteen pounds and a bone density loss of more than two percent among the dieters.
The exercisers had a weight loss of almost fifteen pounds and no significant changes concerning bone mineral density. For the healthy lifestyle group there were no changes about the weight loss or the bone mineral density.
However, the calorie-restriction diet has benefic effects, according to Dr. Villareal. Calorie re | | Religion: Threat to Public Health? 2007-10-20 07:12:12 Reposted from: Freethought Café by J.C. SamuelsonAs any parent can tell you, fear is simply part of the job. Beginning even before one's child is born, fear is a constant companion, an ambient ocean that swells and subsides at every stage of the child's life. Even otherwise joyful or thrilling moments are sometimes laced with fear, such as when one's son or daughter stands for the first time, steps onto a school bus, rides a bike, gets a driver's license, or even graduates from school. Indeed, the altruistic concerns of parents are so extensive and diverse that quantifying them is effectively impossible. Some of them are, of course, justified. Some of them, well, not so much. One of the many perceived fears that at first glance appear to be justified is fear of doctors, or of medicine in general. Medical professionals poke, prod, and otherwise involve themselves deeply in the physical health of our children throughout their lives. It is a profoundly intimate involvement that someti | | Health is wealth! 2007-10-19 19:58:00 Time and time again, my mom does not fail to remind us to eat a variety of food to be healthy. Health insurance might pay for most or all of it. Students might already be covered under their parents' health plan. The study, spanning 10 years, focused on what happens to rural women's health after their marriage ends, compared with women who stay married, said Fred Lorenz, who co-authored the report. The findings came from data gathered from rural Iowa women who were interviewed three times in the early 1990s, and again in 2001. All 416 women interviewed were the mothers of adolescent children when the study began. Among them, 102 women were recently divorced. During the years immediately after divorce — from 1991 to 1994 — the divorced women reported 7 percent higher levels of psychological distress than married women. They did not report any differences in physical illness at that time. A decade later, however, the divorced women reported 37 percent more physical illness, but no difference in psychological stress that could | | World Mental Health Day (Boss Edition) 2007-10-10 19:27:00 Heard on the radio that a 14 year old kid in the united states started another shooting spree in his school. lol! We try to eat healthy. But, hey, we are only human! It's so hard to refuse all the yummy (and bad) food, especially when it is abundant in most parties that we attend.Yes, I know they are all excuses. But seriously now, we really should consider buying some fitness equipment to help us work out a sweat and eventually get us both back into shape before it's too late. | | Both lack of sleep and too much sleep can do damage to one’s health, study finds 2007-10-04 19:06:48 Researchers from the University of Warwick and University College London recently completed a study commissioned by the British Sleep Society. The study involved more than ten thousand residents of the United Kingdom. The research was aimed at finding a correlation between the average number of hours participants slept a night and the condition of their cardiovascular systems and blood vessels.
The findings indicate that the risk of death from a cardiovascular problem doubles for those suffering from constant lack of sleep. A constant lack of sleep results in higher blood pressure, which increases the risk of a cardiac infarction or a stroke.
Women who sleep less than five hours a night are twice as likely to develop hypertension as men whose sleep duration is the same. The findings indicate that individuals who cut their sleeping to five hours or less a night face a 1.7-fold increased risk in death from all causes. Researchers believe a lack of sleep may be also associated with the |
