Craig Nevill-Manning is Google’s engineering director and senior research scientist. He’s also a very good computer science teacher. In a talk at Idea Festival about what Google has learned about innovation, he offers an excellent introduction to computer science for non-programmers. His first lesson is “Think Broadly”. Marketing VOX is reporting Google in the news yet again.  Big shock.  Also not terribly shocking is the avenue Google’s attempting to carve out in the international landscape.  Google will attempt to take a moral tack on the internet piracy debate, demanding that new international laws be passed to protect personal information.  Some suggest that this is terribly overdue. Early this year EU officials conducted a privacy probe, concerned about how long Google keeps users’ personal information. A compromise was reached in mid-June, with Google agreeing to hold search data for only 18 months. Remember Google Vs Bush a year or so again?  One may argue this to be a logical result of that landmark court case. BBC News reports that search giant Google is offering a $30m prize pot to private firms that land a robot rover on the Moon. To claim the cash, any craft reaching the lunar surface must perform a series of tasks such as shoot video and roam for specific distances. The top prize of $20m will be given to the private firm that soft lands a rover on the Moon which then completes a series of objectives. These include roaming the lunar surface for at least 500m and gathering a specific set of images, video and data. A prize of $5m will be given to the second firm that manages to reach the Moon with a rover that roams the surface and shoots some pictures. Google said it would give bonuses of $5m if the rovers complete other objectives such as travelling further on the Moon, taking pictures of Apollo hardware, finding water-ice and surviving the freezing lunar night.Thanks to Shaun A. Mercury News has confirmed that Google, the Internet giant is throwing $30 million sponsor robotic race to the moon. $20 million of that prize money will be given to the first team that successfully lands a privately funded spacecraft on the moon, the second prize will be worth $5 million, while bonus prizes makeing up the remaining $5 million will be given to one finding lunar ice.
