[design_tools] You Suck at Photoshop. Because You Do.
1296. Good peoples, look upon the following label and evaluate its meaning. We do not use it in an ironic sense this time. We are entirely serious. There. That out of the way, we've stumbled on what was previously thought impossible; darkly humorous tutorials. You, according to Donnie Hoyle, suck at Photoshop. You just do. And he's going to decrease your suckitude. But Donnie, you see, has (as they say) issues ... hell, he's got two or three subscriptions. His wife is leaving him. She's unfaithful. He's impotent. He's going through a major league depression. He has a MMORPG-addled friend who's always trying to get him to drop what he's doing to go on a raid. They all have supporting roles in the danse macabre that Donnie does whilst trying to teach you how not to suck at Photoshop. Note well the little touches; the highly-indicative names on the example files; possibly the only use of the phrase "man-batter" you'll ever hear in a tutorial. It's more than performance art,
[ad_design] No, This Is What Allergy Congestion Can Feel Like ...
1293. So I was cruising the intermets for pr0n for graphic design job-search resources and came up on this little banner ad for Claritin:   I was intrigued. I know what allergy congestion can feel like; a whirlpool does not really come to mind. But then I thought ... hey, think outside the box here, Klein. If the feeling of allergy congestion can be equated to something so abstract as to leave me scratching my head, what else could I come up with?   Nuts and bolts? Why not? Or, how about ...   Cumlonimmbis Cumulownimbuds CumulonumbnutsThunderstorms? Nah, too obvious. Whatever else abstraction could we come up with. Could allergy congestion feel like ...   Paisley printed corduroy? Actually, make a note of that one. I'll bet it's not far off. Actually, the last time I had stuffed sinuses, the feeling was similar to ...   ... the feeling I had after watching an episode of Lost. I just can't get the appeal of that show. But if I'm going to compare allergy congestion to a TV show,

[design, news_design] Birth Pangs of a Color Publication
1285. The new edition of the Sierra Club Columbia Group's quarterly, the Columbia Overlook, has hit the mailboxes and should be arriving in Club member's mailboxes any day now. I attended the mailing party at the Group's offices out at 30th and Stark last night, and it's an interesting place to be. Thanks to the tender mercies of graveyard-shift weekend work it's typically not in the cards to attend most Group activities. I believe in what the Sierra Club advocates for, however, and this volunteer activity allows me to give back in a way that really makes it real for me and (I like to think) provides a service that is very much needed. It's a win-win-win. All We Gotta Do is, Talk Talk The biggest challenge here was, just as in every distributed operation, is communication. Jeff, who's been involved with the club for a very long time (one other thing that always impresses me about Sierra Club members is the commitment they have to this group and its cause) and has agreed to becom

Climate: A Design Imperative
Climatic variations across regions alter architectural demands for shelter, warmth, cooling and the relationship of indoor and outdoor living spaces. In designing any structure it is imperative that its context be embraced and that both current climatic conditions and those which may be experienced during the life span of the structure are factored into the design. A structure which ignores its climatic context risks undermining functionality and sustainability. Michael Sandberg of Sandberg Schoffel Architects comments that environmental considerations and sustainability issues are 'tremendously important' for both local and international architects and landscape designers.Mr Sandberg adds that, in architectural design, 'climate has always been a major factor' however it is only now, given the recent drought and associated climate extremes experienced in Australia, that it is becoming a much more public discussion. Architect James Russell agrees that it has always been important to

[logo_design, pdx_media] KGW Storms To HD With Revised Logo
1272. KGW is now in HD, and it looks very much like the station has remodeled its logo look to go with it. This doesn't appear to be a radical redesign, as the recent KATU re-ID was. Rather, this seems to be a refinement of the older logo, integrating the typography they've been using of late in the chyron space (the lower third of the screen).  KGW's Wikipedia page has the old logo, and the entry itself has been edited to say that it was the logo used until 21 January 2008:   Today, posted in this entry on OregonMediaInsiders, fellow user Myhousemf posted this image to an open thread (and we've got to give him the credit ... we've been all over the KGW.com site and haven't found it anywhere):   What comes immediately to the eye is the depth. There's a hint of the drop shadow lifting the 8 above its background shape. What is most remarkable is the shift in the typography (though not in the 8). As pointed out, it now matches the chyron typefaces.  What I find most encourag
GM-Volt Exclusive: Inside the Chevy Volt/E-Flex Design Studio
The Chevy Volt we have become familiar with is the concept car, or show car. After gaining broad public appeal in January 07, when it was first revealed, GM began the process of rapidly bringing the car to fruition. The interior and exterior design of this final or production vehicle is taking place in a brand new space called the E-Flex design studio and it’s team is headed by Bob Boniface (see previous interview here). While in Detroit for the Auto Show, I was given a personal tour of the studio by Bob, and a fleeting glimpse of the production Volt. The space is large and beautiful and filled with the awesome, youthful energy of a few dozen brilliant designers who were either sitting before massive computer displays or hand sculpting the surface of the clay model Volt. It was truly an exciting and pleasant place to be, and obviously to work for those there. Splayed out across the bright wide floor were two models of the production Volt and some interior assemblies called &ldq

808image Web Design Shut Down
Due to a death in the family, I have decided to shut down 808image Web Design. I do not know whether I will reopen it or not in the future. It all depends on how I feel. Right now, I am focused on finding full time employement as a webmaster, online marketing specialist, or web site manager for the time being. This personal site will remain up as I will continue writing articles related to group dynamics, teambuilding, distance learning, general psychology, and parapsychology.
[design_tools] More About The Photoshop Pen Tool
126o. Once again I'm riffing on Empty Easel's Photoshop-tutes-for-the-people, which I think is a pretty cool thing. I too find the Pen tool mad useful for defining selections. There's a maxim that covers use of Photoshop – select it, then affect it – which I've found to be a good guiding light when I'm not sure where to go with what I'm doing. Selecting things in PS is half the battle to using it, and EE's information shows you how to use the Path Tool (a/k/a the Pen Tool) to create selections. That's the basic thing. I suggest you over there if you haven't read it yet. I have a more advanced thing here that's dead wicked useful – a basic move that allows you to save those paths for later use. I mention this because when I use PS I frequently find myself using some paths time and again to create selections or fill areas with color, what have you. It just takes two clicks: First, go to the Paths palette (or Panel in CS3): To start the save, double-click on the path
[logo_design] Channel Surfing: Perfect (and not so-perfect) Tens
1259. I just realized I had a Channel Surfing chapter of the 10's up and I've not posted it. Bad me! So, without further ado, here we go. Wichita's channel 10, KAKE, is on your side. When I was a kid, if you had cake on your side, you were a messy eater due for the bath (and maybe with a cuff on the head)... And now, Channel 10, Goodland KS. KBSL ... nothing much original here. Coverage you can count on, familiar sliver-crescent that looks more like a bowshock with the little flare of light along it. I guess that CBS eye also doubles as a navigational deflector ... Next we have KENV, Channel 10, Elko NV. Yeah, I know ... I thought a place like Elko was too small to have a station, but it does. It, like many micro-market stations, provide entertainment by broadcasting an adjacent large-market station's content (in this case the feed is from Reno's KRNV Channel 4). It bills itself as the only local station serving northeastern Nevada, and we believe them at that. But thier "li

The blogger at Howdy from Moresville, a resident of Denver (Quark, Inc's home town) has gone from being a Quarkster to an InDesignista: In the meantime, I'm a convert--and I feel sort of bad in saying this, seeing as how I spend some days less than 50 yards from said software's headquarters.
