Not enough sleep may lead to weight gain for children, according to US scientists. Previously, children’s lack of sleep was found to cause bad school performance or emotional problems, but a recent study connects it to becoming overweight. Researchers collected data from over 2,000 children with ages between three and eighteen. The results are based on the diaries kept by parents or children themselves where they kept a record of bedtime, hours of sleep, or time of waking up. An extra hour of sleep may help young children by reducing the risk of becoming overweight from thirty-six to thirty percent. For older children, an extra hour of sleep reduces the risk from thirty-four to thirty percent, according to the study’s lead author, Emily Snell. The results were not influenced gender, ethnicity, income, or race. They showed that late bedtime for children with ages from three to eight are strongly connected to weight gain. A new Russian history textbook is being used which portrays the policies of dictator Joseph Stalin in fairly light terms. For example, it gives the impression that Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania voluntarily joined the Soviet Union when in reality they were seized by Stalin. The book does state there were forced labor camps and mentions 800,000 executions, but never comes close to getting at the real figures of at least 20 million dead because of Stalin. Last night was by far one of the longest nights I've had in a while. I couldn't tell you the last time I stayed awake until 4Am! Teenagers in their prime would be so proud, well that is until they found out WHY I was awake until 4AM. My children simultaneously developed some sort of stomach bug. A friend of mine sent me an email warning about the movie "The Golden Compass".It reads:Just wanted to inform you what I just learned about a movie that is coming out December 7, during the Christmas season, which is entitled THE GOLDEN COMPASS. What is disturbing to me is that this movie is based on the first of a trilogy of books for children called HIS DARK MATERIALS written by Philip Pullman of England.
