| Sleep Disorders: Do They Cause Obesity to Children? 2007-11-13 10:42:46 Not enough sleep may lead to weight gain for children, according to US scientists. Previously, children’s lack of sleep was found to cause bad school performance or emotional problems, but a recent study connects it to becoming overweight.
Researchers collected data from over 2,000 children with ages between three and eighteen. The results are based on the diaries kept by parents or children themselves where they kept a record of bedtime, hours of sleep, or time of waking up.
An extra hour of sleep may help young children by reducing the risk of becoming overweight from thirty-six to thirty percent. For older children, an extra hour of sleep reduces the risk from thirty-four to thirty percent, according to the study’s lead author, Emily Snell.
The results were not influenced gender, ethnicity, income, or race. They showed that late bedtime for children with ages from three to eight are strongly connected to weight gain. Unlike the other children, those with ages between eight and t |
| Lies Told To Russian Children 2007-11-12 02:18:03 A new Russian history textbook is being used which portrays the policies of dictator Joseph Stalin in fairly light terms. For example, it gives the impression that Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania voluntarily joined the Soviet Union when in reality they were seized by Stalin. It presents a view that he modernized Russia, although he might have used some severe measures to accomplish that goal. The book does state there were forced labor camps and mentions 800,000 executions, but never comes close to getting at the real figures of at least 20 million dead because of Stalin.
One of the problems of education is failure on the part of nations to present historically valid materials to youth. In America, an event like the War With Mexico ordinarily offers an American interpretation but leaves out the feelings of Mexicans about how and why the war actually began. Japan continues denying the atrocities its troops committed in China and elsewhere and actually gets upset when outsiders raise the |

| Sick Children Update 2007-11-09 19:04:00 Last night was by far one of the longest nights I've had in a while. I couldn't tell you the last time I stayed awake until 4Am! Teenagers in their prime would be so proud, well that is until they found out WHY I was awake until 4AM. My children simultaneously developed some sort of stomach bug. Every 20-30 minutes last night, I was playing catch. There were only two instances where they required my attention at the same time, THANK GOODNESS! It was a rough night, to say the least. I went through a whole load of bath towels, my "catcher's mitt" before the end of my shift. Finally at 4AM I woke my sleeping husband and he graciously relieved me of my duties and he took over. I slept for about two hours. I called in to work and told my co-worker that I'd be a little late. I couldn't take the day off because there were already two other people scheduled off and that would have left him there by himself. So, I downed a Red Bull and a 32 ounce Caramel Vanilla Latte to get m |
| Injuries on Children Caused by ScotchBrite Easy Eraser or Mr. Clean Magic Eraser-Truth! & Fiction! 2007-11-09 06:05:00 Summary of the eRumor: There are apparently different versions of this but they all warn that children can experience injuries on the skin from the ScotchBrite Easy Eraser or the Mr Clean Magic Eraser. One of the eRumors says that Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is being removed from store shelves because of containing formaldehyde. The Truth: The bottom line is that there is a first-hand story of a child who experienced skin irritation from a ScotchBrite Easy Eraser but there is dispute about whether it was from chemicals or the abrasive action of the product from being rubbed on the skin. The story about Mr. Clean Magic Eraser being removed from the market is not true. Procter & Gamble Mr Clean Magic Eraser The eRumor claims that the Magic Eraser contains formaldehyde. | Promoting atheism to the children? 2007-11-07 21:20:00 A friend of mine sent me an email warning about the movie "The Golden Compass".It reads:Just wanted to inform you what I just learned about a movie that is coming out December 7, during the Christmas season, which is entitled THE GOLDEN COMPASS. It stars Nicole Kidman and it is directed toward children. What is disturbing to me is that this movie is based on the first of a trilogy of books for children called HIS DARK MATERIALS written by Philip Pullman of England. He's an atheist and his objective is to bash Christianity and promote atheism. I heard that he has made remarks that he wants to kill God in the minds of children, and that's what his books are all about. He despises C. S. Lewis and Narnia, etc. An article written about him said "this is the most dangerous author in Britain" and that Pullman would be the writer "the atheists would be praying for, if atheists prayed." Pullman said he doesn't think it is possible that there is a God and he has great difficulty under |

| Alpine Skiing Racing for Children - What Should You Know About It 2007-11-06 03:00:03 Skiing with children is a fantastic way to spend time together. Being out there together on weekends is healthy and it can give lots of joy. Even though most of the people go skiing with children occacionally, there are people who take it more seriously and start training their children for alpine skiing races. Those people usually have a lot of passion and own experience in skiing and racing. To which group you belong to? Are you interested in training your children for the races and is your child interested in it? Keep on reading. I will tell you few things you should know before starting training your kids.
So you are one of those who would like to see their kids racing, right? Don’t worry; I won’t say it is bad or selfish behaviour. Some folks tend to think that many fathers try to live their dreams through children. I don’t always agree with that. I find racing good for children as long as they enjoy it. My wife thinks that I try to live my dreams while my son go |
| Scientists Study Children Who Feel No Pain 2007-11-05 01:03:30 Today we tell about some recent studies of pain, and new possibilities for controlling it.Have you ever wished you could not feel pain? There are people in the world with this ability. They do not know when they are hurting. If you have ever broken a leg or given birth, this might sound good to you. But a person unable to feel physical pain can be in danger and not know it.Last year, Nature magazine published a report about six children who have never suffered pain. C. Geoffrey Woods of the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research in England and his team wrote the report. The six children come from three families from northern Pakistan. The research team found the children after hearing about a boy who apparently felt no pain. The boy stood on burning coals and stabbed his arms with knives to earn money. He died in a fall before the researchers could meet him.But the team was able to find members of the boy's extended family. They also seemed unable to feel pain. These children were six |

| Motherbridge of Love - A Book For The Children 2007-11-01 04:47:09 We are delighted to help promote the new book “Motherbridge of Love” that has been published to support the children’s charity Mothers’ Bridge of Love:
“This book shares its name with a London-based organization dedicated to promoting greater understanding of Chinese life and culture among adoptive families in the West.
The text, credited to an anonymous adoptive mother, takes the form of a series of heartfelt, parallel musings about two women “who never knew each other” but who are central to a sprightly Chinese girl. “The first one gave you life; the second taught you to live it…. One found a home for you that she could not provide, the other prayed for a child; her hope was not denied.” Masse (Goodnight, Sweet Pig) echoes this dreamy lyricism with gently surreal illustrations rendered in a texture like shot silk. Her treatment of the birth mother merits particular interest: on some spreads, she portrays the woman relatively realistically, c |
| Why Do Children Need Designer Clothing? 2007-10-29 10:06:13 Last week I read an article in The Wall Street Journal about girls being bullied in school because of the clothes they wear. The article, entitled ‘Fashion Bullies Attack — In Middle School’, begins with the story if a sixth-grader from Illinois whose mother dresses her in designer clothes, yet she gets bullied by the other kids because she is too dressed up and has no urban clothing items like Apple Bottom jeans and Air Force Ones. | Progress Reported in AIDS Campaign for Children 2007-10-25 01:29:58 Our subject this week is children and AIDS.The United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, has just released a report on a campaign launched in October of two thousand five. UNICEF, the U.N. AIDS program and other groups wanted to bring greater attention to the needs of children affected by AIDS.The report on the "Unite for Children, Unite Against AIDS" campaign says there are signs of progress. One of the biggest problems is the spread of HIV from mothers to children. Mother-to-child transmission was the main cause of the estimated half-million new infections last year in children under the age of fifteen.UNICEF reports that several countries in eastern and southern Africa have made what it calls breakthroughs. It says they greatly increased the number of mothers who receive antiretroviral drugs. These medicines can prevent mother-to-child transmission. For example, the report says Namibia increased coverage from six percent of mothers to twenty-nine percent. That was between two thousand |

| Your Children Will Be Muslim: Turkish Doll Teaches Islamic Prayer 2007-10-23 10:38:45 MEMRI brings attention to a doll that leaves me speechless. To me this is just one more absolutely perfect reason to not allow the continued growth of Islam in the United States and to keep Turkey out of the European Union forever. Of course, I’m probably in the minority because I do not have blinders on, so your grand kids are going to be able to play with little Aisha and her doll Elif one of these days and learn how to pray five times a day. | America: War? YES!...Children's Health? NO! 2007-10-19 08:53:50 The U.S. House of Representatives Fail To Override Bush SCHIP Veto...The House tally was 13 votes shy of the needed two-thirds majority...supporters of the bill were unable to convert a single House Republican who voted against the bill last month...Many GOP lawmakers echoed President Bush's concern that the bill would go too far in giving states the option to also help some middle-class families. This vote stands as the latest example of how Mr. Bush can still get his way on Capitol Hill. Through despicable use of veto threats and his veto pen, Mr. Bush has fended off attempts to force a change of course in Iraq and twisted Democrats into knots over domestic surveillance -- a feat Democrats would never have imagined when they pushed Republicans out of power a year ago.U.S. News & World Report bulletin is HEREBottom Line? ...Bush and his cronies are tyrants, Democrats have been reduced to whining minions, Americans are embedded in apathy, ignorance and Attention Deficit Disorder... |
