In the year 2008, mentally ill children are being systematically locked up with violent adults at several institutions in Sweden. Lena Nyberg, Children’s Ombundsman in Sweden, expressed her anger at these policies which directly violate the UN Convention on the Rights of Children. Article 37 of that document states, “every child deprived of liberty shall be separated from adults.” However, many closed psychiatric departments across Sweden do not follow regulations and at several institutions children are mixed with adults, both systematically and in the case of emergency. The most common complaint in such situations is that some children are too difficult to handle and thus cannot be placed with other children, but the newspaper, Svenska Dagbladtet, found cases in which mixing occurred due to lack of space or staff resources. The situation in Pakistan continues getting more complex as gunmen are now trying to get school children involved in adult disputes. A group of militants took up to 250 Pakistani school children hostage in a northwestern town, but freed them within twenty-four hours. It appears tribal elders interceded in order to remove children from the line of fire that now exists between militants and the government of Pakistan. The militants surrendered to the jirga– a council of elders. Earlier accounts by the government said militants were responsible but it is now unclear as to the intent of the men who took hostages. The entire episode began when police were chasing militants who had kidnapped a government official. Fortunately, this episode does not replicate the terrible deaths of Russian children who were caught in the cross fire between government and rebel forces. When could I take my son skiing with me? I was six years old when my sister took me skiing with her, which happened in 1980. Children of Bodom is a power metal band from Espoo, Finland. Their music ranges from heavy metal to melodic death metal to power metal. I first discovered these guys while downloading a bunch of Iron Maiden stuff. Apparently they did a bunch of Iron Maiden covers and their versions are a lot faster and heavier. The band got its name from the Lake Bodom murders and a lot of their music is about war, death, the grim reaper, personal struggles, and, of course, the Lake Bodom murders. Couple of my favorite songs from them are The Final Countdown and Lake Bodom. There’s quite a lot of nice guitar riffs in there. I also really like their version of Iron Maiden’s Powerslave and Aces High. Children of Bodom are set to tour this summer with Megadeth, In Flames, Job For A Cowboy and High On Fire for the Gigantour 2008. The tour will run from April to May of this year.
