It seems that Shakespeare is the inspiration of choice for Bollywood filmmakers at the moment. This time, Hamlet is to get a Bollywood makeover into a political thriller. In recent years, Bollywood has successfully adapted Shakespearean tragedies Macbeth and Othello, moulding their political tone to modern day Indian settings. Director Sudhir Mishra, whose films combine popular with arty says he will use Hamlet’s dilemma to explore the ‘sleaze and sordidness’ of Indian politics. “It is an out and out thriller,” said Mishra, talking about the film named “Devdas”. The plot for the film not only draws from Hamlet, it also draws from the classic Indian tragedy about unrequited love, Devdas. Bollywood star Mayur Verma has set up home in Dolgellau, North Wales, and hopes to make his new home town location for further productions. Verma moved to Dolgellau with his wife and two children and his mother, who is an established writer and film director. The Delhi-born actor has said, “”Everyone is so welcoming and friendly and it’s a great place to raise a family.” Mayur has homes in London, India and the USA. He has appeared in nearly 180 films since becoming a child star. His debut was in the film Mukaddar Ka Sikander, making him an overnight Bollywood star and one of the highest-paid child actors in Indian Cinema. Talking about his welsh home, he says, ““We’ve now bought a property here. I love the people here, it’s rich heritage and culture and the peace and quiet. An Indian Court has rejected an appeal by Bollywood star Salman Khan against a five-year prison sentence for a 1998 poaching case on Friday. This verdict will send the actor to jail. The 2006 court ruling which has sentenced him to jail for poaching a chinkara (an endangered species of Gazelle) while shooing a film in Rajasthan state. Khan filed an appeal against the sentence. This wasn’t his only conviction. Khan was convicted in 2006 for killing protected black buck antelopes and given a one-year prison sentence. He was granted bail while appealing that conviction. Salman Khan wasn’t present when the verdict was announced. His lawyer has said, “His hotel room was booked but he couldn’t get a flight and was therefore held back,” It is not known when Salman will be taken into custody. The Bollywood movie features Akshay Kumar as Sidhu, a Mumbai cook who is mistaken as a kung fu hero. The movie also stars Deepika Padukone. Bollywood is the name for the Mumbai-based Hindi-language movie industry that creates about 800 films a year. That’s twice as many as Hollywood. 14 million Indian people go to the cinema every day and Bollywood movies regularly make the UK box office top 10. Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has been sentenced to six years in jail for buying weapons from bombers who attacked Mumbai (Bombay) in 1993. The star's lawyers argued he should remain free on bail for good behaviour, but the judge ruled against leniency.The actor was cleared of conspiracy, but found guilty of illegally possessing a rifle and a pistol.As the sentence was announced, a shocked Dutt told the court, "I made a mistake."The 'Munnabhai MBBS' actor was also fined 25,000 rupees ($600).His lawyers said they would appeal against the sentence, reports BBC.The 1993 Mumbai blasts killed 257 people.
