America’s Trillion Dollar Wars- Just Keep Counting That’s Not The Final Figure
By the end of this fiscal year President George Bush would have requested $196 Billion for the wars in Iraq and afghanistan pushing total expenditures to about $806 Billion, a figure that is greater than the cost of fighting the Vietnam and Korean wars. However, that figure is not completely correct since interest payments will run another $1 Trillion. Some economists point out if the cost of veteran benefits, including disability costs, is added into the total we might even be envisioning a $3 Trillion final total for the Bush search for ever elusive WMD. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, noted that Bush vetoed a bill to provide medical care for children that would have cost the American government the equivalent of 40 days fighting in Iraq. As an aside, the record keeping of the State Department is so bumbled that it can not even account for the $1.2 Billion it paid DynCorp for its services in Iraq. President Bush had a wounded soldier by his side as he asked Congress for more mone

America: War? YES!...Children's Health? NO!
The U.S. House of Representatives Fail To Override Bush SCHIP Veto...The House tally was 13 votes shy of the needed two-thirds majority...supporters of the bill were unable to convert a single House Republican who voted against the bill last month...Many GOP lawmakers echoed President Bush's concern that the bill would go too far in giving states the option to also help some middle-class families. This vote stands as the latest example of how Mr. Bush can still get his way on Capitol Hill. Through despicable use of veto threats and his veto pen, Mr. Bush has fended off attempts to force a change of course in Iraq and twisted Democrats into knots over domestic surveillance -- a feat Democrats would never have imagined when they pushed Republicans out of power a year ago.U.S. News & World Report bulletin is HEREBottom Line? ...Bush and his cronies are tyrants, Democrats have been reduced to whining minions, Americans are embedded in apathy, ignorance and Attention Deficit Disorder...
Wachovia Follows WaMu, Bank of America Down, Down, Down
Wachovia is the latest bank to take massive write down charges for loan loss reverses relating to mortgage lending - adding $1.3 billion to the write down pile in what will be remembered as one of the worst weeks for banks for a long time to come.  From Reuters: Wachovia Corp posted on Friday a 10 percent decline in third-quarter profit, missing forecasts, as the fourth-largest U.S. bank suffered $1.3 billion of write-downs at its investment banking unit. The drop was the first in six years. It concluded a dismal week for large U.S. banks, which have been battered by increases in bad loans and capital market disruptions that resulted in losses on mortgages and other kinds of debt. Profit fell 57 percent at Citigroup Inc and 32 percent at Bank of America Corp. It rose 2 percent at JPMorgan Chase & Co and 4 percent at Wells Fargo & Co. Results and outlook for all but JPMorgan disappointed investors. One thing to keep an eye on is Wachovia’s performance over the next 24 mo
Bank of America not Immune from Turmoil
Bank of America today reported larger-than-expected losses resulting from credit-related losses and poor investment banking returns.  The company, which was one of the few to not report massive write-down charges on their investment portfolios due to subprime mortgage performance prior to releasing earnings, surprised analysts by reporting a 32% drop in profit for the 3rd quarter. Analysts also questioned the company’s efforts to boost loan loss reserves to further protect against further loan degradation and performance. From Reuters: “We knew the credit situation was going to be bad, but this was worse than expected,” said Michael Mullaney, who helps invest $10 billion at Fiduciary Trust Co in Boston, which owns the bank’s shares. “What causes us concern is the increase in reserves doesn’t appear aggressive, and the bank may need to reserve more in the future, which hits earnings,” he added. “The real surprise was investment banking, w
Atheism In America
While reporting on the annual Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) convention in Madison, WI, the Associated Press notes that it has been a good year for atheism. I agree. Impressive sales of atheist-oriented books have pushed atheism into the American consciousness to a degree not seen during my lifetime. Not only do there appear to be increasing numbers of us, but we are slowly starting to become better organized. A national freethought radio show just launched, and membership in freethought organizations such as the FFRF are increasing. Growing numbers of nonbelievers are tiring of remaining in the closet and beginning to speak out. We seem to have that critical yet elusive force of momentum on our side. The challenge is how we can build on this year's accomplishments and sustain the current momentum while taking our growing movement to the next (and yet to be defined) level.I suppose this notion of needing to maintain our momentum as our secular movement expands is one of the m
Retiring Outside America
By Lisa Bonos The Washington Post (Oct 14, 2004)Mary Strociek, 49, and her husband, Matt, 67, had their hearts set on retiring to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. They bought a condo there in the late 1980s "when it was a quiet, sleepy village," Mary Strociek said. But then others discovered the beauty of the area and the place boomed. "We decided to get out of there," Mary said.Avid sailors, the couple hopped on a friend's 50-foot boat and cruised the Caribbean. They checked out all of the Virgin Islands, St. Martin and St. Bart, and yet were drawn back to Mexico. Then they discovered Panama. The Strocieks were overwhelmed by the breathtaking sights."It's one of the few places I can see the curvature of the Earth," Mary Strociek said of the view from her property, which she says looks out on nearly 300 miles of coastline.Won over, the Strocieks sold their Chicago home and built a house near the mountain town of El Valle, where they now live, she explained in a phone interview from her pool. Two
America’s Best Pizzeria
Pizza made long way and highlighted the gourmet history. It was born in the poor neighborhoods of Naples and passed the ocean to settle in everyone’s heart and stomach. Open Thread: America Dying
I’m still in a bit of shock here. I do not have much to say. The useful idiots in Washington, D.C. are managing to sell our nation right out from under us under various facades; anything from religious tolerance to anti-discrimination. We all should forget about common sense. Forget about logic. Squander truth. Hide history. Protect the borders? Ha! Stop Islam? You must be joking. America is dying. This thread is now open to any discussion of your choosing. During the Cold War the USA defeated Communism because we declared it the enemy of our way of life. Is the “religion” of Islam also an ideological enemy of the ‘American Way’? Yes, and our elected officials are behaving like cowards by not addressing this issue! Yes. No. No. Your grandchildren will be Muslim. View Results  Loading … Similar Posts:Open Thread Sunday Open Thread Sundays and Podcasts Open Thread: Labor Day 2007 Open Thread: Clarity Open thread o

Report: Spoiled - Keeping Tainted Food Off America’s Tables
Perhaps by continuing to post on product failures, I am flogging a dead horse, but once again I have found another report that should be highlighted Spoiled, Keeping Tainted Food Off America’s Tables (PDF Here) is written by Jessica Milano for the Progressive Policy Institute. She actually works for Competition Policy Associates (COMPASS) Written from the perspective of an American looking for ways to protect consumers from imported products, Milano focuses primarily on the government agency infrastructure in her report and offers up the following 5 “simple ideas to improve food safety” Improve and simplify the regulatory process by creating a single food inspection agency. Double resources for food safety by cutting waste. Shift to a risk-based allocation of resources. Create a stronger recall authority. Use the Container Security Initiative (CSI) program to strengthen pointof-entry food inspections. In coming to these conclusions, she lays out some very compeling
