Bush 1 recalls the good old days when America didnt torture...
Yeah, those were the days... when America wasn't torturing people. On this morning’s Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace interviewed former President George H.W. Bush at his Presidential Library in Texas. Bush defends his son’s disastrous presidency, but later in the interview as he and Wallace stood in a mock up of a tent used by U.S. soldiers during the first Gulf War, he vehemently defended his
Is Anti-Semitism Alive In America?
The 2007 study by the Anti-Defamation League regarding anti-semitism in the United States indicates, “anti-Semitic beliefs endure in America.” The survey revealed that 15% of Americans — 35 million- had “unquestionably anti-Semitic views.” The survey indicates 31% believe Jews are more loyal to Israel than to the United States and 15% believe Jews have “too much power.” African Americans constitute among the most anti-Semitic groups with 32% harboring such views. The ADL was concerned that such views continue enduring in America. One can examine this survey and come away with sharply different conclusions. It is back to the argument of the glass have filled or half empty. About 35 million Americans have some form of anti-Semitism, but 265 million do not. It is interesting how classical physical features are no longer associated with Jews but the perennial complaint about Wall Street and power lingers on. On the other hand, although Jews are le

Living With a Disability in America - and Trying to Earn a Living
Last month we began a series of reports on living with a disability in America. We started with education. Today, in Part Two, we look at employment. To go to work, you need a way to get there. Around the nation's capital, many people take subway trains to their jobs.Federal law says public transportation systems in the United States must be accessible. What does that mean? It means that trains, buses and planes must be designed for use by people with physical disabilities. In Washington's Metrorail system, for example, lights go on and off as a signal to those who cannot hear a train arriving. Raised bumps on the ground serve as a warning to those who cannot see they are close to the edge of the platform. And there are elevators in the station, so people in wheelchairs have a way to get from one level to another. But in transit systems, like anyplace else, life is not always easy. Things like broken elevators, or no elevator at all, only create more barriers for the disabled.Accessible
London Calling - Day 6 - An America in London
Now that Brad and Dawson are BOTH in London, Max took them over to Red Studio X, the premiere European porn star and erotic photography studio, to get some new publicity pictures of our two resident exclusive studs. And if we do say so ourselves… they’ve never looked better!Later Monday night we found some time to [...]
Superstition Reigns Supreme in America
How about a short horror story in time for Halloween? The true ones are always the most terrifying, so this one will be true. In August of 2007, The Barna Group completed a nationwide telephone survey of 1,000 American adults, selected at random and weighted to reflect demographic trends. The results are quite chilling.A report of the results can be found here. Among the findings, which serve as this brief horror tale, are the following:Americans are confident in the truth of many biblical stories. In fact, two of three adults accept the literal truth of six well-known biblical stories. The story most likely to be accepted as being "literally true" (i.e., as occurring exactly as described in scripture) was "the story of Jesus Christ rising from the dead, after being crucified and buried." A full 75% of respondents said that they interpreted this story literally, including 68% of college graduates. The tale of Daniel in the lion's den was accepted as literal truth by 65% of American adul
John Edwards Was Dropped on His Head as a Baby: Reveals “New-Deal like” Plan to Destroy America
A Saturday Night Live skit could not invent a more ridiculous plan for America than the one John Edwards just revealed. John Edwards’ proudly declared “New-Deal like” suite of government programs are clearly intended to spread misery to the greatest number of people. No person who understands economics would propose this disaster, unless they were dropped on their head as a child. Other than... Surprised in South America- Three Times
By Sandra Scott To escape northern New York’s winters my husband, John, and I spend three months some place warmer. In 2007, our “winter getaway” was South America. While we had been to South American several times, during this trip we found some pleasant surprises. The new Colombia If ever
Naked America
For those Americans so inclined, rest assured: A federal appeals court has just made it easier to take naked pictures of yourself and post them on the Internet. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati earlier this week ruled that a federal pornography law, the Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act, violates the First Amendment.the story is HERE
Putting America First
Is America really in a position to solve the world's problems? Our list of problems is getting pretty long and we have done little to solve them. It seems to me that if America is to solve world problems, we must first learn how to solve our problems. We talk about ending world hunger, yet we are unable to end American hunger. Through learning how to end hunger here at home, we may find a way to end hunger everywhere. It is time to put our country and our problems first. I do truly care about the rest of the world, but I believe we could do more to make the world a better place by making America a better place. I'm not talking about isolationism here. I realize we have to be involved in what's happening around the world, but not to a point where it leaves us neglecting our own problems. As our problems grow and become worse it weakens our ability to help other nations. If we let things get completely out of control in America, we may reach a point where we
Political America: In Search of a Common Conscience
As much as I’ve always enjoyed Ogden Nash, the poet, I must confess that many of his writings have impacted me as if coming from the wisdom of a philosopher rather than the wit of an accomplished light verse mechanic. And, among his many vignettes, there is one that seems to have stayed inscribed [...]

BBC Notes "Atheist Moment" in America
Of the many things I appreciate about the Internet, one near the top of the list is the ease of obtaining international news. Mainstream American media outlets do a terrible job of covering what is happening in the world, preferring instead to regale us with pointless "news" of Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton. I am particularly interested in reading about how America is perceived from the perspective of other countries. A story on BBC News recently caught my interest. It appears that they've noticed our "atheist moment."Tim Egan's article notes that America, "one of the most religious countries in the West," is experiencing a surge of doubt. It may be daring to say it but America seems to be experiencing an atheist moment. Although "In God We Trust" was declared the national motto by an act of Congress more than 50 years ago and has been stamped on the currency for longer than that, some considerable doubt has developed of late. That the United States is experiencing re
Brutal Burma Military Blasts Bully America
Myanmar’s brutal military government upped its attacks upon the United States for interfering in the internal affairs of its nation by claiming the Bush administration was attempting to impose its views on its government. “Recent protests in the country were created by the loudmouthed bully, using the exiled dissidents and traitors together with communists, internal and external anti-government destructionists” in order to cause turmoil within a peaceful nation. The author of the piece in the Myanmar language, Myanma Ahlin daily said the United States was attempting to recreate conditions of 1988 that resulted in the deaths of thousands of protestors. George Bush has been accused of many things in his life, but claiming that he is working in cahoots with communists is certainly a new approach to making critical remarks about one of the most conservative presidents in history. For one of the few times during his administration, the American president is actually stand
The Smashing Pumpkins Launch 2007 Tour with Bunches of Shows in San Francisco and North America Through October
While it is by no means a reunion of the iconic alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan and his band are pitching themselves as the real thing, even though two of the original band members - bassist Darby Wretsky and guitarist James Iha - are not touring with Corgan. Therefore, fans have actually gone to the shows not knowing Wretsky and Iha were not on the tour, and that's wrong; it would be like The Rolling Stones touring without Keith Richards (yeah I know...) and Ron Wood. Read more about reaction to this controversy.Nevertheless, Billy Corgan and Friends, as a local reporter called the band, sold out 10 shows at San Francisco's historic Fillmore Theatre. Corgan apparently cannot lego his ego and decides to deceive fans.Rumored to be 'The Smashing Pumpkins' last tour, tickets for all of the shows (the capacity of the venue is 1,500) were gone in one day and are now being scalped and sold on eBay and Craig's List (which eBay owns 25% of) for four to ten times
Freedom of Speech-in-Action: Robert Spencer at Young America’s Foundation
On August 2, 2007, Robert Spencer delivered a speech to the Young America’s Foundation conference in Washington, D.C. The infamous Council on American-Islamic Relations made loud legal threats against YAF in order to attempt to intimidate the organization into not having Spencer as a guest speaker. CAIR’s efforts proved fruitless as the YAF refused to relent the right to Freedom of Speech! YAF spokesman Jason Mattera introduces Mr. Spencer. Bank of America Exits Wholesale Lending”¦For Now??
Sorry for the lack of updates today folks. I was lucky enough to be invited to the Beverly Hills and Greater Los Angeles Association of Realtors meeting to hear Brad Inman and Dustin Luther talk about blogging in real estate. I highly recommend that if you are the industry you try to hear either of them speak - you’ll learn a lot about where we are headed in terms of marketing to customers. Anyway, I digress. Thank you to EVERYONE that emailed me to let me know that news that Bank of America is exiting wholesale lending at the end of the year. They will accept loans from brokers until 11/25 which must close by 12/31. From the web site (here’s a link to the PDF of the announcement): Important Announcement Today Bank of America announced that it will exit the wholesale mortgage business in order to devote increased energy to its expanding retail channels. We will be fulfilling all of our contractual obligations to you and your customers. The termination of your Whol
Coming to America as a Fulbrighter
We come to the twentieth week of our series on higher education in the United States. Today we answer two e-mails from Thailand. A refugee from Burma and another listener in Thailand both want to know more about the Fulbright Program. The Fulbright Program gives Americans a chance to study, teach or do research in other countries. And it gives people in other countries a chance to do the same in America.Fulbright grants are given to graduate students, scholars and professionals. There is also a Fulbright exchange program just for teachers and administrators. Each year about six thousand people receive Fulbright grants. The United States government pays most of the costs. Foreign governments and schools help by sharing costs and providing other support. The Fulbright Program operates in about one hundred fifty countries. Around two hundred seventy thousand Fulbrighters have taken part over the years.Legislation by Senator William Fulbright established the program in nineteen forty-six. He
America has Facebook fever...
This is a good article... I fucking love Fast company articles so much. The world has Facebook fever. Launched just three years ago by Zuckerberg--a college dropout and acknowledged hacker who famously turned down a $1 billion buyout offer from Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) in 2006--Facebook has become the "it" company of the tech world. An entire industry has sprouted up around the site seemingly
Bank of America to Cut 3,000 Jobs
The jobs will primarily be cut out of their investment banking and capital markets groups in a further sign that the credit contraction has caused a mass reduction in activity in the secondary markets and structured finance arena. From Market Watch: Bank of America said late Wednesday that it is cutting roughly 3,000 jobs and launching a strategic review of its investment banking business after recent poor performance from the unit. Most of the job cuts will be from Bank of America’s investment banking unit, it said. Those reductions represent less than 2% of the company’s staff. Business Lending, Treasury Services and Capital Markets and Advisory Services, as well as supporting infrastructure, will be affected, the bank said. Bank of America reported a 31% drop in third-quarter profit last week as trading losses and a hit from loans backing leveraged buyouts nearly wiped out the company’s investment-banking income. We saw a lot of cuts on the origination side, and
