Bank of America announced today that it would realize at least $3 billion in write downs related to losses in CDO holdings. Banks of America cited “severe dislocations” in the CDO market triggered by downgrades at the ratings agencies as the primary culprit of the losses. Losses could become much greater as well. Bank of America has exposure to $15 billion in CDOs and $12 billion of that exposures is backed by risky (and failing) subprime mortgage debt. Not good news for near-future profit for the banking leader. From Market Watch: Since the end of the third quarter, “the credit ratings of certain CDOs were downgraded which, among other things, helped to trigger severe dislocations in the CDO markets,” said Chief Financial Officer Joe Price. “As a result, many market participants have announced large write-downs,” the executive said during an investment conference hosted by Merrill Lynch & Co. Donald Kerr, the principal deputy director of national intelligence, says that it is time for Americans to rethink our definition of Privacy. He states that privacy should no longer mean anonymity, but that government and businesses should properly safeguard people's private communications and financial information. I don't believe this is what he is really saying, but lets deal with it first. I thought these things were already supposed to be safeguarded. Isn't that why we continually receive privacy statements from just about everybody? Besides, we have seen several cases this year where businesses and government have failed to safeguard our information. The deputy director's statement is ridiculous. Privacy shouldn't mean safeguarding our information; safeguarding our information should mean safeguarding our information.I think what Mr. Kerr is really saying is that we should allow government to collect our information as they see fit. A recent poll appearing in USA TODAY indicates Americans are split over the issue of military action against Iran with 46% supporting it and 45% in opposition. Some critics of such surveys blame the manner of posing the question of military action as a reason so many are in favor of attacking Iran. For example, if the follow up said, “Do you support an American land attack on Iran?” the results might be markedly different. The poll indicates great concern about Iran’s development of a nuclear bomb, but three-fourths believe the US “will be too quick to use military force.” The voices of fear have been heard from virtually all Republican candidates vying for the presidential nomination and they repeatedly claim Iran is close to having an atomic bomb. The poll also indicated only 31% of Americans approve of the job being done by Bush and, for the first time, 50% “strongly disapprove” of his performance. The high number of people supporting milita
