The troubled singer is believed to be applying for a visa to attend the Grammys in Los Angeles on February 10, where she is nominated for six awards. Her rep says, “The appointment at the US Embassy was made some time ago and was part of process for obtaining a visa. No decision has been made about the Grammys. “Amy was accompanied by a nurse as the appointment was under supervision. She has not left rehab and remains under the care of the clinic.” Amy Crackhouse was banned from the U.S. last October after she was arrested in Norway for possession of marijuana. Amy Winehouse

Yes Or No Headscarf– A Defense From America
Two American Muslim seniors at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. presented an eloquent defense of why Muslim women should wear a headscarf. Hafsa Kanjwai and Khadijeh Zarafshar, defend wearing of the headscarf on several grounds. They charge the West has distorted reasons why Muslim women wear one and connect the Hijab to some sort of male oppression of women. “In modern times, the veil has become an emotionally charged symbol of the struggle between tradition and modernity, betwen Islam and the West. It has arguably served as a partial political justification for certain policies spearheaded by the United States to ‘liberate Muslim women’ in Afghanistan or Iraq. We, as Ameican Muslim women, simply by living our dual identity, demand a re-evaluation of this externally imposed dichotomy. As Americans, it is not our place to speak on behalf of women of other nations.” They argue there is not such thing as “Muslim women” since that expression att

Miss America: Reality Check
If you haven’t heard (and quite frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if you hadn’t), Miss Michigan Kirsten Haglund, was crowned Miss America 2008 over the weekend. I know I missed it. In fact, I didn’t even know it was on for me to miss. After years of declining ratings the pageant was dropped from network TV in 2004, and then spent a couple of years on CMT before TLC picked it up last year. In an effort to reinvigorate the Miss America Pageant, TLC has decided to try an make the pageant “hipper” to appeal to a younger audience. TLC added a four-week reality show about the girls preparing for the pageant. While I think this is a great idea, most of the changes were in fact pretty lame unless by younger they mean people in their 40’s instead of people in their 60’s. Here are some of lamer the changes that were made this year: - A DJ played dance music on stage - Adding some humor to the opening number - Clinton Kelly of TLC’s What No

This years pageant, which was televised on TLC, was supposed to be hipper and sassier than in years past. Here are some of photos of our latest Miss America so you can judge for yourself. Let us know if you agree. Personally, I’m not convinced. You can also read my full comments on the 2008 Miss America Pageant as well if you’re interested. Guest Post: Teaching Lies Jeopardizes America's Future
This is an invited guest post by Billy (A Liberal Disabled Vet), a regular commenter on Atheist Revolution. I continue to appreciate his many thought-provoking comments and am happy that he agreed to write another guest post.A few months ago, vjack was kind enough to ask me to write a guest post. I wrote a piece which vjack named "Fear of an Idea" (I think I am pretty good at writing, but coming up with titles has always been tough for me) which generated some interesting comments. Vjack said I could write more, and so I planned. I planned to write about hypocrisy, both on the personal and institutional level. And writer’s block hit hard. That being said, I decided to write about something completely different. My son is about to enter college. He is studying history and secondary education with an eye toward becoming a high school teacher. I have begun paying a little more attention to the subject of education and have become more than a little bit concerned. My concern is more about
Sarah Michelle Gellar calls America gluttonous.
I like her & I know where she’s coming from. But please. I’ve had enough whining from wealthy, famous celebs  And oh ya….eat a sandwich. Fox:”I have experienced first-hand and I know how lonely life — and it is not just Hollywood — can be,” Gellar told Pop Tarts while promoting her latest crime/drama “The Air I Breathe.”"It’s hard. You are constantly someone else and it is hard spending your life being someone else and projecting an image to really find yourself. It’s tough. When I travel to these remote places, I feel pleasure and happiness and helping these young girls — in America we are such a gluttonous society, and seeing the way these people appreciate everything is such an exciting time,” she said. “Sorrow is when I come back.
