the EcoStreet go green challenge: day 14
2007-08-28 04:35:48
It’s the final day of the EcoStreet go green challenge! Congratulations on getting to the end of the two weeks, and well done on making lots of positive changes to your life and to the planet. Your final challenge is a choice of three, or go the whole hog and do all all of them. 1. Start composting - we explain how to do it here. 2. Replace disposable batteries with rechargeable batteries - get yourself a stock of rechargeable batteries and a charger for all your gadgets that require batteries. Don’t forget that you can take your disposable batteries down to Curry’s to be recycled. 3. Plant a tree - Plant a tree in your garden to shade your house in summer, and convert carbon dioxide to oxygen. Give trees and chance. If you haven’t got a garden, get a pot plant. We’re giving away a copy of Sheherazade Goldsmith’s book A Slice of Organic Life and an eco-nique carbon neutral leather MP3 case to the writer of our favourite story of how you got on ...
Organic Cotton Clothes for Kids
2007-08-27 10:24:40
How do you like to dress your child? Do you want him or her to look like a miniature adult or to be a child as long as possible? From my own observations there does seem to be a need in some people to dress children like mini adults which I feel is a pity. I would argue that these years are very precious and from my own experience as a mother I can tell you they pass all too quickly. I would be really interested to hear your viewpoint on this question. One thing which I am sure we will agree upon is that children’s clothes need to be versatile and give value for money. There are some great clothes available now in organic cotton which is soft and cosy for your child because the cotton fibres are intact and not broken by the chemicals and machines used in conventional cotton farming and production of textiles. An important point to consider is that organic cotton is less likely to trigger allergies because there are no harmful chemicals used either in growing the cotton or in finishin ...

the EcoStreet go green challenge: day 12
2007-08-26 13:33:55
It’s day 12 of the EcoStreet go green challenge! Your challenge for today is to turn down your washing machine to 30-degrees. Eco-friendly washing powders like Ecover and Simply Sensitive work just as well at 30-degrees as at 60-degrees. To go even greener than that, buy yourself some soap-nuts. Soap nuts grow on trees and can be used instead of your regular washing powder or liquid. the EcoStreet go green challenge: day 9
2007-08-23 12:45:09
It’s day 9 of the EcoStreet go green challenge! Today we are challenging you to save some water. Have a shower instead of a bath. Put a bucket in your shower with you and use the water that you collect to water your plants. Turn off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth or shaving, and put the plug in when you’re washing your hands. Put a hippo in your toilet cistern. If you want to go the whole hog and save loads of water you could fit a water-saving shower head. Cotton - Genetically Modified Seeds
2007-08-20 09:34:42
Although there has been considerable concern expressed at the introduction of genetically modified foods it is not so well appreciated that the clothes that we wear are produced from cotton grown from G.M. (genetically modified) seeds. In fact a significant amount of seeds cultivated are from this source. There are two main reasons why genetically modified crops are grown they are tolerant to herbicides and resistant to insects. Weed control is supposed to be easier because the plants are able to tolerate non selective chemicals which kill all other natural vegetation. Unfortunately this has resulted in a decrease of beneficial insects as the plants that they feed on are also killed. The plants are resistant to insect pests as they have bacteria introduced within the plant by genetic modification which kills insects that feed upon them. It had been predicted that G.M. cotton crops would require less herbicides but this does not appear to have happened. It has been suggested that envi ...
Politics and “Organics” partnership or conflict?
2007-08-20 09:34:23
A recent report from Mintel consumer, media and market research analysts has disclosed that ethical shopping has reached new heights with rising demand for organic and fair-trade products, and also many more shoppers recycling packaging. This growing trend reflects consumers concerns about global warming and the exploitation of developing countries. In June 2007 representatives from the United Kingdom organic sector urged the Environment minister David Miliband not to allow organic food to be contaminated by genetically modified organisms. It is evident according to the Food and Drink Federations organic group that one of the main reasons consumers buy organic is to avoid eating food contaminated with G.M. The government is proposing to increase the threshold for G.M. contamination of organic food from 0.1% to 0.9%. This move is fiercely opposed by the Soil Association who argue that it is not economically sensible for the government to tamper with current regulations given that the or ...
