2007-07-26 16:25:05
By buying recycled we close the loop that we start when we recycle our waste. Thanks to some extraordinarily creative people out there, our waste can become a desirable fashion statement. The recycled tube bag from Ting is made of old leather belts and lined with vintage fabric. The belts are bonded together and cleverly crafted into a very cool bag. Made in Spain. £275 with free shipping during the month of July 2007. 3. The Rubbage clutch bag is made of recycled tyre inner tubes and edged in stainless steel. A handbag with attitude. £22.95 plus postage. 4. In response to George Monbiot’s recent article in the Guardian on “ethical consumerism”, Gareth Kane of Eco-Living explains how we can carry on spending, and still be eco-friendly in his blog post entitled Less is more? Treehugger also comments on George’s article, saying that ethical shopping shows how rich you are, and that if really want to live green, you shouldn’t be buying anything you don’t absolutely need. I was digging around on Squidoo the other day and came across a very cool lens about The Non-Electric Life. It’s got some interesting ideas for cutting down energy use. How to give your garden a green makeover
2007-07-25 17:04:12
Continuing our series of green makeover posts, today we’ll be concentrating on your garden. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make a few changes to the way you garden, and make a big difference to the planet. These suggestions are not only for those with large suburban or rural gardens. They apply equally to those of you with a roof garden, or a few pots on a balcony. Composting Composting is a fantastic way of reducing household waste, and it’s a free resource of nutrition for your garden, preventing the need for peat-based compost and chemical fertilisers. There are so many ways to compost, some even suitable for flat-dwellers. Here is a look at some of those options: Simple Composting - You’ll need a garden for this, and somewhere to “cook” the compost. Either dig a hole and be an undercover composter, make yourself a composter or buy a composter and fill it with your fruit and veg peelings and garden waste. A few months later ...

Reminder: please take our reader survey
2007-07-24 09:16:53
We are taking part in this year’s Blog Reader Project to find out more about you, our readers. We are asking you to take a completely anonymous survey about yourself and your interests, blog-related and otherwise, which will give us (and potential advertisers) a better sense of who you are, and will be added to data from other blogs for an overall picture of the blogosphere. We’d love you to take the survey so that we can get to know you better, and so deliver more of what you are interested in. The folks at BlogAds who are organizing the Project note “You may want to warn readers that the survey is long, BUT they can bail anytime after the first page. (Once they hit drinks questions, they’re almost home and deserve a drink.) The survey takes about 12 minutes.” I hope that you will complete the whole thing, but if you only have a couple of minutes, please do as much as you can. Thank you in advance, and again, the survey is anonymous. Also, thanks for being an EcoStreet ...

Catching up with the weeks environmental news… London Councils are proposing a 10p plastic bag tax for the capital. It’s about time the UK caught on to this trend and rid its streets of the blight of plastic bags. Only one in every 200 plastic bags are recycled, and plastic bags can take up to 400 years to breakdown. Betsy Reid is a remarkable woman who lives her life with a zero-waste policy. 5 of the best bits of recycling kit
2007-07-20 02:21:12
Recycling is a wonderful way to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill, save energy, and help the planet. There is some very nifty recycling gear out there to help you sort, squash and reuse your household waste. Here are some of my favourites. 1. The Binvention - Stylish and desirable, the Binvention is a home recycling organiser. It’s made of recycled aluminium, and enables you to re-use plastic carrier bags to sort your recycling. 2. Recycled Waste Logmaker - How would you like to turn 30% of your household waste into free fuel for your open fire, wood-burning stove, chiminea, barbecue or camp fire? The Logmaker is incredibly simple and easy to use, and the logs burn for between 10 minutes and 1 hour, depending on their contents. With the Logmaker, you can not only reduce the amount of waste that would otherwise go to landfill sites but you’ll help conserve forests by reducing wood felling and consumption. So don’t bin it, burn it. 3. The PlasCan - T ...
