EcoRadar - 3 August 2007
2007-08-03 06:28:02
Having missed the EcoRadar last week, here’s an update on news that caught my eye in the past 2 weeks.
Nuclear power: who is thinking what?
Not so much news as a handy primer, AlterNet’s Rebecca Solnit has put together an article about What to Say to Those Who Think Nuclear Power Will Save Us. She points out that “nuclear power is often nothing more than a way to avoid changing anything”, and suggests that you “derail the conversation by asking whether they’d like to have a nuclear power plant or waste repository in their backyard, which mostly they would rather not, though they’d happily have it in your backyard.” Rebecca’s friend Chip Ward (from nuclear-waste-threatened Utah) makes an interesting point: “Wall Street won’t invest in nuclear power because it is too risky. … The partial meltdown at Three Mile Island taught investment bankers how a two-billion-dollar investment can turn into a billion-dollar clean ...

Music 4 the planet: Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell
2007-08-03 02:23:33
I grew up in a really tough town–the kids were as mean as New York kids, so when they got too much for me, I would ride my bike out into the country. I’d sit in the bushes, smoke, and watch the birds fly. I wrote a poem when I was 11 about a boy living on a farm who overhears his father saying he’s going take this bluff down, and the bluff is everything to the boy. I take it through all of the seasons: “Slapping a puck into an orange crate goal, applauded only by the wind that banged and clanged and shuttered in the greenery door.”
Joni Mitchell in an interview with Camille Paglia, talking about the point in her life when she became an environmentalist

Reminder: please take our reader survey
2007-08-02 02:20:41
To new readers or those who haven’t already taken our reader survey, we are taking part in this year’s Blog Reader Project to find out more about you, our readers. We are asking you to take a completely anonymous survey about yourself and your interests, blog-related and otherwise, which will give us (and potential advertisers) a better sense of who you are, and will be added to data from other blogs for an overall picture of the blogosphere. We’d love you to take the survey so that we can get to know you better, and so deliver more of what you are interested in.
The folks at BlogAds who are organizing the Project note “You may want to warn readers that the survey is long, BUT they can bail anytime after the first page. (Once they hit drinks questions, they’re almost home and deserve a drink.) The survey takes about 12 minutes.” I hope that you will complete the whole thing, but if you only have a couple of minutes, please do as much as you can.
Thank you in advanc ...

Britain’s floodplains: is building on them a good idea?
2007-08-01 16:27:00
This video was made before the recent floods that we’ve experienced in England. Flood plains may be our best defence against rising sea levels. Should we really be building on them?

Embrace green motherhood: breastfeed
2007-08-01 14:59:05
Breastfeeding is the most environmentally friendly way to feed your baby. Breast milk is a renewable resource. No plastic bottles that will end up in landfill one day, no energy needed to produce plastic bottles and formula milk, no inefficient land use and methane produced by cows, and the only energy used is your own. Forget that sterilising paraphernalia, and having to haul bags of feeding equipment around. Breasts are not only attached to you so you can’t forget them, they serve up the perfect food for your baby, at the perfect temperature, no matter where you are.
What better time to draw attention to breastfeeding than on the first day of World Breastfeeding Week:
Initiation of breastfeeding within the 1st hour of birth is the first and most vital step towards reducing infant and under-five mortality, by reducing the overwhelmingly high neonatal mortality rate. Save ONE million babies – beginning with one action, one hour support and one message: beginning breastfee ...

Visit the Delabole Wind Fair
2007-08-01 11:04:07
The 3rd annual Delabole Wind Fair is being held at the Delabole Wind Farm on Saturday 18th August from 11am-6pm. It’s hosted by Good Energy, and entrance is completely free. There will be wind turbine tours, forums about generating electricity at home, lots of entertainment for kids and grown ups, plenty of local and organic food and drink, live music and – after the event – the spectacular turbine illumination.
The Wind Fair will also present the repowering exhibition. Good Energy is planning to replace the existing turbines in Delabole with a second generation of modern, more efficient wind turbines which will generate greater amounts of green electricity for many years to come. The exhibition at this year’s Wind Fair will display what the proposed wind farm will look like.
“We want to put people in touch with renewable energy and show them that they can help to secure Britain’s energy supply and become part of the solution to Climate Change. There is a serious me ...

Lose weight and cut carbon
2007-07-30 15:29:23
We have already established that a meat-free diet is better for the planet, better even than ditching your gas guzzler for a Toyota Prius hybrid. Now the Vegetarian and Vegan Foundation give us the V-Plan diet that is better for us, and for animals too. This is no fad diet, destined to fail. It is about making lifestyle changes that are based on solid scientific facts, and includes foods that will minimise the risk of chronic diseases and help you lose weight. All this while being kind to animals and reducing your carbon emissions.
The V-Plan diet provides a full week’s worth of meals and recipes (including deserts). Being that I’m always very interested in the puddings, chocolate ones especially, I include the V-Plan Chocolate Mousse recipe here to tempt you to read more.

EcoReview: method wood for good furniture polish
2007-07-30 02:43:09
I bought a bottle of method wood for good furniture polish spray from Sainsburys a couple of weeks ago and am pleased to report that it’s been a pleasure to use. Both my oak kitchen worktop and my birch dining table have benefited from its application. As promised, they are looking rich and smudge free with a gentle sheen. The fragrance left behind by method wood for good spray is delicious, and the packaging is recyclable. As far as practical use goes, this is a great product. It falls down though on the fact that it is imported from the USA, we have enough on our hands with food miles, who needs cleaning product miles too. And secondly, on price. In the US a bottle of wood for good polish costs $5. In the UK, the same bottle costs £4.40. Considering the exchange rate, this seems something of an injustice.
