EcoRadar - 10 August 2007
2007-08-10 11:11:24
From the sublime to the ridiculous, here’s the week as I saw it through my green tinted spectacles.
Politics
In the US George Bush wants to discuss climate change in Washington during the UN’s scheduled climate change talks in New York. He says it will support the UN talks, but it looks more likely that it’s aimed to derail them. What do you think?
Over here in the UK, Gordon Brown has downgraded the cabinet committee on climate change, and excluded Air Emissions from the draft Climate Change Bill. It’s not looking encouraging.
On a positive note, the government have plans to build 240,000 eco-homes a year. But not before they tear down one of the UK’s most eco-friendly homes for “failing to make a positive environmental impact”.
What the science is saying
Newsweek declare that Climate Change is a hoax, until you read the fine print and discover that it’s actually an exposé of how lots of green backs are being spent to ensure that we ...

Music 4 the planet: Flying by Seize the Day
2007-08-10 02:54:45
It all started back during the road protest days of the late nineties: Theo met Shannon, and they began to make beautiful music. They’ve been protesting, campaigning and playing to audiences big and small ever since. Their songs will make you laugh, cry, or stand up and get active in changing the world for the better. Seize The Day walk their talk, and can often be found up trees, chained to gates, marching (and writing very strong letters to their local MP), as well as playing at festivals, town halls or benefit gigs across Britain. They’ve also toured in America and India, but because of climate change have now pledged not to fly again.

Your green “Back To School” guide
2007-08-09 10:02:57
With only just over 3 weeks until the schools go back, it’s time to start thinking about stocking up on essential “Back to School” supplies and uniform for the start of the next school year. Green school supplies and uniforms are starting to make it into the mainstream, so with a little bit of forward planning, there’s no reason why you can’t choose the greener options.
Uniform
Marks & Spencer have a Fairtrade range of white school shirts and polo shirts for boys and girls. They are reasonably priced and available in larger stores and online. They have also announced a new range of uniform basics made of recycled plastic bottles.
Spirit of Nature stock a range of Fairtrade and organic cotton school uniforms for younger children (up to 8yrs).
Clean Slate is an independent Fairtrade and organic cotton school uniform supplier. Clean Slate work with schools to supply Fairtrade and organic embroidered uniform, and encourages co-operative buying clubs t ...

7 cheap and easy-to-find recycled products
2007-08-07 16:18:25
Most of us know the merits of recycling our waste. By doing our bit we reduce landfill waste, reduce carbon emissions and improve our environment. And so we dutifully sort our rubbish into glass, plastic, paper and metal, ready for collection by the council waste services, or we even take it to the recycling centre ourselves. But how many of us are buying recycled to complete the circle? It is essential to do this to create a demand for recycled products. Here are 7 recycled everyday products that are inexpensive, readily available and simple to include in our lives:
1. Recycled toilet paper -what possible reason could there be for cutting down trees to wipe your tush? You can buy recycled toilet paper at most supermarkets (Waitrose, Sainsburys and Tesco do their own brand; don’t go for Nouvelle), or you can order it in bulk from Natural Collection.
2. Recycled kitchen towels - again, these are readily available from supermarkets, look for own brands.
3. Recycled tissues ...

EcoStreet’s best-seller list: the top 5
2007-08-06 11:15:53
I’ve decided to compile a list of books that you, the EcoStreet community, have been buying over the past few months. Whenever an EcoStreet reader clicks on one of our Amazon links and buys a book, we are able to see what they are buying (we don’t get specific info on what individuals buy, but rather which books have been purchased during a specific time period).
When you make a purchase at Amazon after clicking on one of our links (or in our new EcoStreet bookshop) we get a small commission that helps us to improve EcoStreet and cover the expenses of running the website.
1. How to Live Off-grid: Journeys Outside the System - read my review of this book here

EcoReview: Storm kettle
2007-08-06 04:08:31
I bought a Storm Kettle from Natural Collection for my husband at Christmas last year, and we’ve been so impressed with it that I thought I’d give it a little write-up here. It came in very handy during a power failure a few months ago, and is number one item on our packing list for when we head off to The Green Man Festival late next week.
This is why it’s such a great piece of equipment…
It boils 2.5 pints of water within a few minutes using only a ball of newspaper and some twigs (or whatever else you have handy). The kettle consists of a fire pan and a kettle which has a conical chimney through its centre, making it extremely efficient at boiling water. It’s ideal to use at the allotment, for camping, at festivals, and you can even use it at home to reduce your electricity usage by burning bits of garden waste. It works fine in windy or wet conditions too. You can get a 2.5 pint Storm Kettle from Natural Collection for £44.00, and they do a co ...

Cotton - Genetically Modified Seeds
2007-08-05 14:23:44
Although there has been considerable concern expressed at the introduction of genetically modified foods it is not so well appreciated that the clothes that we wear are produced from cotton grown from G.M. (genetically modified) seeds. In fact a significant amount of seeds cultivated are from this source. There are two main reasons why genetically modified crops are grown: they are tolerant to herbicides and resistant to insects. Weed control is supposed to be easier because the plants are able to tolerate non selective chemicals which kill all other natural vegetation. Unfortunately this has resulted in a decrease of beneficial insects as the plants that they feed on are also killed. The plants are resistant to insect pests as they have bacteria introduced within the plant by genetic modification which kills insects that feed upon them. It had been predicted that G.M. cotton crops would require less herbicides but this does not appear to have happened. It has been suggested that env ...

3 worthwhile things to do this summer
2007-08-04 13:30:33
If you’d like to get away from this summer, don’t want to fly and balloon your carbon footprint, but can’t think of what to do or where to go, here are a few suggestions for some eco-friendly summer activism/learning/fun.
The Camp for Climate Action
14-21 August 2007: 8 days of low-impact living, 200 free workshops and high-impact direct action, at an as yet undisclosed location near Heathrow Airport. Bring your own tent, but there’s no need to bring food. Families are welcome, but it’s worth noting that there is anticipation of a very determined police response.
Brithdir Mawr Community Summer Camp
23-27 August 2007: Spend 4 days in Pembrokshire with the Brithdir Mawr off-grid community enjoying practical workshops and demonstrations in green woodworking skills, working horses, wool craft, survival skills, seed saving, herb craft, renewable energy, community living. Limited to 100 tickets.
Wilderness Gathering
30 August - 2 September 2007: If you fancy ...
