Terracotta Army
2007-09-13 09:41:00
Terracotta ArmyThe Terracotta Army was buried with the Emperor of Qin (Qin Shi Huangdi) in 210-209 BC (his reign over Qin was from 247 BC to 221 BC and over unified China from 221 BC to his death in 210 BC). Their purpose was to help rule another empire with Shi Huangdi in the afterlife. Consequently, they are also sometimes referred to as "Qin's Armies".The Terracotta Army was discovered in March 1974 by local farmers drilling a water well to the east of Mount Lishan.Mount Lishan is also where the material to make the terracotta warriors originated. In addition to the warriors, an entire man made necropolis for the emperor has been excavated.Construction of this mausoleum began in 246 BC and is believed to have taken 700,000 workers and craftsmen 38 years to complete. Qin Shi Huangdi was interred inside the tomb complex upon his death in 210 BC.In July 2007 it was determined, using remote sensing technology, that the mausoleum contains a 90-foot tall building built above the tomb, wi ...

Gravity, Think Again!
2007-09-13 09:38:00
Gravity, Think Again! So how about defying gravity in ten simple steps:Step 1. You will be needing an empty room. Step 2. Now you need to paint the entire room & the floor white.Step 3. To add more reality to the whole structure paint a window on the floor.Step 4. Now you need to nail up a rug on the wall, & hang a table over it & add a couch to this setup.Step 5. Further to this add a poster & a light switch on the ceiling for making a more realistic effect.Step 6. Now you need to reinstall the curtain rod & tack up the drapes to make them hang sideways. Plus sticking some stuff to the table in a suggestive manner would make it look much better.Step 7. Now its time to fix the trash bin. "Nail a trash bin high up in a corner of the room, & arrange some trash around it. "Lean" a broom against the ceiling (again using monofilament thread)."Step 8. Now arrange a bookshelf, filled with books & fix an end table & hang a lamp on it.Step 9. "Suspend a ceiling lamp and its cord so it "hangs" si ...

Solar Eclipse Images
2007-09-12 12:47:00
Solar Eclipse ImagesSince the time man has become aware of his environment, eclipses have been mystical to him. Though the diameter of the sun is 400x that of the moon, & also its distance from earth is approximately 400x that of the moon & as a result, they seem to exhibit a very similar apparent diameter. And when these two celestial bodies are in perfect alignment with earth by forming a straight line & the moon virtually covers the sun leading to darkness in the daytime, which lasts for only a few minutes. Here is a collection of solar eclipses done by the chasers who considers them as a once in a lifetime opportunity.Source: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8Other Posts:Remember This Guy Matt? Razzle Dazzle
2007-09-12 12:40:00
Razzle DazzleDazzle Camouflage, the British called this camouflage as Dazzle Painting & the Americans called it Razzle Dazzle. It was a camouflage paint scheme used on ships, mainly during World War I. It consisted of a complex pattern of geometric shapes in contrasting colors, interrupting and intersecting each other. At first glance it seems like an unlikely form of camouflage, drawing attention to the ship rather than hiding it. Dazzle camouflage had a very specific purpose, however, which was to make it difficult to estimate the target ship's speed and heading and so disrupt the performance of the visual rangefinders used for naval artillery at the time. In other words, its purpose was confusion, rather than concealment.CB-1, The cruiser Alaska.DD-541, The destroyer Yarnall.USS Charles S. Droste Effect
2007-09-11 09:03:00
Droste EffectIn the year 1956, "the Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher made an unusual lithograph with the title 'Print Gallery'. It shows a young man viewing a print in an exhibition gallery. Amongst the buildings depicted on the print, he sees paradoxically the very same gallery that he is standing in." The term was coined by the poet and columnist Nico Scheepmaker at the end of the 1970s. It is named after Droste, a Dutch brand of cocoa, whose box has a picture of a nurse carrying a serving tray with a cup of hot chocolate and a box of the same brand of cocoa.Droste Effect flash movies - I Droste Effect flash movies - II If you need any help here is the tutorial.Source: 1, 2 & 3.Other Posts: Now Who Need Electric Defense Fence!Related Posts:Optical Illusion With Trucks Elevator Floor Illusion

Soviet Underground Submarine Base
2007-09-11 08:59:00
Soviet Underground Submarine BaseOne of the monuments of Balaklava is an underground, formerly classified submarine base that was operational until 1991. The base was said to be virtually indestructible and designed to survive a direct atomic impact. During that period, Balaklava was one of the most secret residential areas in the Soviet Union. Almost the entire population of Balaklava at one time worked at the base; even family members could not visit the town of Balaklava without a good reason and proper identification. The base remained operational after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 until 1993 when the decommissioning process started. This process saw the removal of the warheads and low-yield torpedoes. In 1996, the last Russian submarine left the base, which is now open to the public for guided tours around the canal system, the base, and a small museum, which is now housed in the old ammunition warehouse deep inside the hillside.SourceOther Posts:Cool Magazine Illusion ...

Parasites Gallery
2007-09-10 09:16:00
Parasites GalleryWe have seen many parasite photos in the past but these are the best we ever came across. Pair of schistosome larvae. A devastating illness schistosomiasis is caused by this species. Schistosomiasis or bilharzia, is a parasitic disease caused by several species of flatworm. The acute form of schistosomiasis is sometimes known as snail fever and cutaneous schistosomiasis is sometimes commonly called swimmer's itch. Here we have a female Anopheles mosquito, a malaria vector, filling up on a blood meal. There are approximately 400 Anopheles species, of which 30-40 transmit four different species of parasites of the genus Plasmodium that cause malaria which affects humans in endemic areas.Copepod egg sacs growing out of a flounder's eye. Copepods are a group of small crustaceans found in the sea and nearly every freshwater habitat. Some copepods are parasitic and attach themselves to fish, sharks, marine mammals, and many kinds of invertebrates such as molluscs, tunicate ...

Who Would Marry This Guy!
2007-09-10 09:15:00
Who Would Marry This Guy!No doubt this is a bit of an old piece of info but the contract what he did really made us to post this story & its for the benefit of those who haven't stumbled upon it.This guy Travis Frey made a "Contract of Wifely Expectations - that sought to establish guidelines for his spouse in terms of hygiene, clothing, and sexual activities. While we normally point out the highlights of most documents, there are so many in this demented, and very graphic, contract, we really can't do it justice. So set aside ten minutes--and prepare to be repulsed."Frey's wife never signed the contract & later it was provided to cops, which Frey never thought would very likely be unenforceable, & would only serve as damning evidence at his trial. However, the document uses decorative fonts & formatting, may be he thought it was appropriate for section headings.Excerpts given by Jennifer but you really should read the whole thing. "Hygiene & Self Care: You will shave every third da ...
