More Bible Jeopardy!
2008-01-03 14:15:15
There are so many inconsistencies and contradictions in the Bible, how can anyone take it seriously? Here's a nice example. What were Jesus' last words? Three books in the New Testament have three different answers. Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. It's as if none of the New Testament authors were actually there (ha ha)...For many more Bible contradictions, see the Skeptics Annotated Bible!

Youth pastor charged with performing sex acts on teenager
2008-01-03 05:36:32
A youth pastor at Bible Way Church has been charged with performing sex acts on a 14-year old girl three separate times. Investigators say 36-year-old Falcon Davis worked at the Augusta church for 2 years. They say Davis confessed to the crimes. He is now in jail awaiting a bond hearing.Investigators took him into custody after the girls mother called the Sheriff's Department this weekend. During the investigation they found 37 pages of Yahoo! Messages between Davis and the teenager. Many of them were sexual in nature. And investigators say the teen eventually told them that Davis came to her house to perform oral sex on her. They say this case serves as a warning to parents."Monitor what your children do, because in all honesty you don't know who they're talking to. It could be a child, or an adult who is a predator of some sort," said Richmond County investigator Earnest Furgeison.Young people from age five all the way up to 18 are involved in the youth program at Bible Way.Right now ...

Atheists denied the right to adopt
2008-01-02 18:43:43
After six years of childless marriage, John and Cynthia Burke of Newark decided to adopt a baby boy through a state agency. Since the Burkes were young, scandal-free and solvent, they had no trouble with the New Jersey Bureau of Children's Services—until investigators came to the line on the application that asked for the couple's religious affiliation.John Burke, an atheist, and his wife, a pantheist, had left the line blank. As a result, the bureau denied the Burkes' application. After the couple began court action, however, the bureau changed its regulations, and the couple was able to adopt a baby boy from the Children's Aid and Adoption Society in East Orange.Last year the Burkes presented their adopted son, David, now 31, with a baby sister, Eleanor Katherine, now 17 months, whom they acquired from the same East Orange agency. Since the agency endorsed the adoption, the required final approval by a judge was expected to be pro forma. Instead, Superior Court Judge William Ca ...

Faith is just an excuse for something you can't prove
2008-01-02 18:32:41
Sent in by Ellis Kim (Everglaze)My Anti-Testimony (Full Version)First of all, Christianity is like being covered in a black sheet of thick cloth with a blindfold around your eyes. While in the darkness, you're driven by fear and confusion. It's only after you hear the reassuring words of someone claiming to be your saviour that you feel at ease in this current state. But, having seen nothing, you're left with no other option except to concur with the stranger's comforting instructions. Eventually, you're able to adapt to your current state of black cloth and blindfold, because you have someone to rely on. However, the deeper you're immersed into the stranger's reality, the more you lose your own. Thus, the only way to return to the reality that you once knew and not some hopeful fantasy, is to get rid of the black cloth and blindfold, eliminating fear and regaining freedom.I was born and raised in a Christian home, so I learned about Biblical tales at an early age (Adam and Eve, ...

Atheism - A belief in the here and now
2008-01-01 13:48:13
Atheist Fernando Aguilar of Walla Walla reads extensively to learn about the world around him and believes it's possible to live a moral life without religion. "Live your life the way you want other people to live. Enjoy family. Do something in the community that helps others. It's the community and family, to me, that are most important," he said. When mortar shells were exploding near Fernando Aguilar in Iraq, he didn't pray to God for help. He doesn't believe God exists. And his long-held conviction didn't change when he traveled to a war zone. Aguilar, 55, of Walla Walla, is a civil engineer and his work has taken him to some of the most dangerous places in the world. He's been to Iraq twice and Afghanistan once since 2003, helping to build water systems, hospitals and schools. He's also done relief work in Southeast Asia and volunteered in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina. Using the skills he has to benefit others is part of the code Aguilar lives by. He ha ...

What do I believe? In short...
2008-01-01 13:40:40
Sent in by Hells BellsI was brought up as nominally Christian, attending a CofE infant school, with a brief spell at a Church of England (CofE) primary school before we moved to the “countryside” and the relatively secular state education system. My secondary school (an all-boys boarding school) was also CofE – one of those “peculiars” where the school had its own ordained chaplain and wasn’t considered part of any parish. I fell into evangelical Christianity when I was 13. Puberty was hitting, and I suppose I was confused by what was happening to me - wanting a female puberty to happen instead of the male one yet, as so often in my life, rationalising that desire out in terms of the practicalities should it actually happen. I was lonely, bullied, confused and I didn't fit into school. Reading the “Knowing God Personally” booklet made perfect sense with what I had been taught up to that point. If Jesus had the answers then he could sort me out, give me purpose. ...

Evidences for a god?
2008-01-01 13:24:12
By Bob PIt has become obvious that the ongoing debate over religion has little or nothing to do with religion. The dispute has degraded into citing references that may or may not be relevant to the issues at hand. Here is a list of some of the irrelevant issues: 1: The mental status of the debater.Sanity has certainly never been a prerequisite for religion. The same rules should hold for atheism. Any Sunday morning with a TV set can confirm this. 2: Was Hitler a Christian or an atheist? Christians claim Hitler was an atheist. Hitler was raised a Catholic and claimed to always be religious. But that issue is a moot point in whether a god exists or not. 3: Stalin, Pol Pot and Ho Chi Min are reported to be atheists. I believe they were... So what? Is their position of any more significance than Hitler's? 4: How many and which scientists are religious and how many and which ones are atheists? I believe this issue weighs highly in favor of the atheists, but again, it's simply a straw-man ...

African pastor fathers child with daughter
2007-12-30 18:35:47
The girl who was allegedly raped and impregnated by her own father dreams of going back to school and would like to see her daddy punished.Lucia (real name withheld), 17, says she was raped by her father, Herbert Bugembe of Mutungo, in Kenya last year. She delivered a baby boy on June 17 but her father has reneged on his written commitment to provide for both children. (See, 'Pastor rapes, impregnates his daughter'; The Weekly Observer, December 20-26).In an interview last week, Bugembe denied the accusations. He charged that her daughter was being used by rival pastors happy to bring him down. But The Weekly Observer has seen documents Bugembe signed admitting to being the father of her daughter's child. The matter was reported to CID headquarters in Kampala but the Police had taken no action by press time.Speaking from her mother's home in Kayunga, Lucia said she was still struggling to reconcile with the man she first met as a father and the man who she says, later destroyed her ...

Retired pastor sentenced to prison for molestation
2007-12-29 10:30:08
A retired pastor from Canada was sentenced to three years in prison today after telling a McHenry County judge he was sexually harassed by the 4-year-old Lake in the Hills girl he pleaded guilty to molesting.Kenneth R. Cooke, 73, appeared to have reasonable chance at a probation sentence given his age, health problems and lack of criminal history heading into his sentencing hearing this afternoon. But the Calgary man who once headed his own ministry likely blew his chance of avoiding prison when he took the witness stand and painted his pre-school age victim as a sexual aggressor."On a couple of occasions I felt I was sexually harassed," Cooke said. "I think there is psychological evidence that children even in their younger years can become interested in sex."He later said he did nothing inappropriate to the girl, but pleaded guilty two months ago to avoid putting his family through a trial.Judge Joseph Condon responded harshly, telling Cooke his statements show that he has no remorse ...
