The Atheist Revival
1969-12-31 17:59:59
The results of a new Gallup poll indicate that public trust for organized religion is nearing the record low obtained during 2003. Could it be that Americans are finally starting to tire of TV preachers, Christian extremist pundits, and other purveyors of hatred and irrationality? Could it be that they are beginning to understand what theocracy really is and to realize that they want no part of it?It is unlikely to be mere coincidence that this decline in trust of organized religion is happening at a time when atheist-oriented books are flying of the shelves. There is growing talk of an atheist movement or atheist revival, and one gets the sense that it is likely to strengthen. The consensus explanation for what is happening is fairly simple, perhaps deceptively so. According to Tom Harpur's recent article in The Star,This reaction to the gross excesses of religious rhetoric, not to mention the crimes against humanity, committed today in the name of God by factions and members of virtu ...
Tired of Katrina?
1969-12-31 17:59:59
Are you growing tired of hearing about Hurricane Katrina? Unfortunately, ignoring unpleasant things rarely makes them go away. We who were affected by Katrina know this all too well. It has been almost two years since Mississippi and Louisiana were hit by this storm, and coastal residents are still struggling.Problems such as inadequate housing and unfulfilled funding promises by state and federal governments are now joined by concerns over environmental neglect and privatization. According to Monique Harden, Co-Director of the New Orleans-based Advocates for Environmental Human Rights,Now what we're seeing is our federal government putting together these government private partnerships that call for giving huge tax breaks to developers, repealing environmental and public health laws, privatizing public schools and other public services and healthcare systems, this is the -- you know, a nail in the coffin of recovery for our communities. It also sounds as though the effects of racism, ...
Anonymity: Shield of the Atheist Blogger
1969-12-31 17:59:59
Atheists commonly assert that our situation will improve as more and more of us "come out" and reveal our atheism to the world. I do not disagree, for the parallels to the GLBT movement are obvious. So how can I continue to write this blog anonymously? This is a question with which I periodically struggle, but I remain convinced that the benefits of continued anonymity outweigh the costs. I have a variety of reasons for remaining anonymous, some obvious and some probably less so.This post was prompted by Hemant at Friendly Atheist who recently leveled some subtle criticism of anonymous atheist bloggers. After acknowledging that his opposition to anonymity as "caused some friction with some people I know," Hemant asks why we anonymous atheist bloggers maintain our anonymity when doing so makes it "that much harder to make atheism more acceptable in society."This is a fair question. I cannot pretend to answer on behalf of all anonymous atheist bloggers, but I will attempt to do so for my ...
America is NOT a Christian Nation
1969-12-31 17:59:59
One of the most common assertions one encounters by Christian extremists and even some moderate Christians is that America is a Christian nation. This claim has been thoroughly discredited in more sources than any individual could possibly compile. In fact, it is hard to imagine an atheist blogger who hasn't addressed this claim and one point or another. I realize that this post will do little to prevent the issue from recurring here, but at least I will have a prepared response ready for next time. And besides, the topic certainly fits with the current Blog Against Theocracy blogswarm.Common Sources for the Christian Nation ClaimFirst, let's unpack the claim itself. Why might one argue that America is a Christian nation? As it turns out, there are many reasons. Here is a quick review of some of the most common:The majority of American citizens identify themselves as Christians on various surveys. The American government officially endorses or sponsors Christianity.Non-Christians have ...

Amnesty for Libby
1969-12-31 17:59:59
I'm sure you've heard by now that Bush pardoned Scooter Libby today. Everybody knew it was coming, but I for one didn't expect it so soon. This is going to be all over the blogosphere for days, so I'm going to keep this short and just share a simple thought on the matter. These Republicans who pressured Bush to do this and who are now celebrating and congratulating Libby are many the same Republicans who are loudly protesting immigration reform because they consider it amnesty. Isn't amnesty what Bush just granted to Scooter Libby? Is this simply racism, or am I missing something here? The law-and-order Republicans (and I mean all of the get-tough-on-crime crowd and not just Fred Thompson) allegedly oppose the latest immigration reform bill because it grants amnesty to "illegal" immigrants. In other words, they do not believe that people who broke the law should be let off. To do so, they argue on their hate-filled talk radio, is to make a mockery of our laws and essentially reward ...
Atheists Owe Apology to Real Christians
1969-12-31 17:59:59
As individuals who commonly extol the virtues of rationality, critical thinking, and the application of reason, it is tempting to assume that atheists are less prone to misunderstandings and a variety of cognitive errors. However, many of us (myself included) have been making a big error when it comes to our views on Christians. It is time to fix this error, and I hope that my atheist readers will join me in apologizing to the many Christians we have wronged.Christians are a diverse bunch. While they share some central tenets of Christianity, one can find a full spectrum from right-wing biblical literalists to progressives who interpret the same bible metaphorically. Fundamentalism may be a fast-growing segment of Christianity, but it is certainly not synonymous with Christianity. We atheists often find ourselves confused over who is a "real Christian" and who is not. Pat Robertson, D. James Kennedy, and James Dobson certainly refer to themselves as Christians. In fact, it is not unchar ...
