Christian Neighbors Vandalize Atheist's Yard
2007-09-07 13:55:00
If you haven't read about this yet, head over to Kazim's Korner to learn how his Christian neighbors vandalized his yard because they were upset with his freethought bumper stickers. I think he handled a difficult situation remarkably well.

Homeland Security Spends Your Tax Dollars on Clergy Response Team
2007-09-07 06:47:00
In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, residents of New Orleans were in desperate need of many things: shelter, food, water, medical care, basic security, etc. What lesson did the American government learn from this tragedy? All criticism of their response aside, it turns out that they learned a fairly important lesson and are now ready to implement it during the next natural disaster or terrorist attack.Just what is this important lesson our government is ready to implement? The Department of Homeland Security has enlisted the aid of Christian clergy to pacify the public in the event of future scenarios calling for martial law. Yes, you read that correctly.According to KSLA News 12 out of Shreveport, LA, situations that might require martial law (e.g., natural disasters, terrorist attacks, etc.) create serious problems for the government: irate citizens. To make victims feel better and prevent them from expressing dissent which the rest of us might find troubling, a "Clergy ...

Spreading Atheism to Nonbelievers
2007-09-06 05:38:00
Countless atheist blogs, online forums, and chat rooms provide atheists with relevant news on church-state issues, opportunities for atheist activism, and social networking. Given our status as America's most distrusted minority, these services provide an essential function for the growing community of nonbelievers. And yet, many like-minded individuals have not yet discovered our dynamic online community. This post is not about converting believers to atheism but about helping our fellow nonbelievers find us.I used to think that atheist blogs would forever be limited by a type of readership cap. The idea was that there were so few atheists that traffic at atheist-oriented blogs would plateau fairly quickly and be unable to grow much beyond that point. This was too simplistic. There are far more nonbelievers than I had realized, and while many do not identify themselves as atheists, they meet the definition of atheism.Persons getting on Google and search for "atheist" or "atheism" ar ...

Texas Board of Education Unlikely to Include Creationism
2007-09-05 05:51:00
Despite the presence of several creationists on the Texas State Board of Education, it appears that ID will not enter the science classroom. This is good news for Texas children and defenders of science education. Teaching crap and calling it science does not change the fact that it is still crap. Fortunately, board members appeared to understand this simply truth.Christian extremists have long sought to replace science education with religious indoctrination. If science contradicts biblical teaching (and it most certainly does), then science must go. When it became clear that this was not going to happen, they tried to insure that creationism would at least be included in the educational curriculum, going so far as to claim that it should be taught as an alternative to evolution.According to The Dallas Morning News,A solid majority of the State Board of Education, which will rewrite the science curriculum for public schools next year, is against the idea, even though several members s ...

"Angry Agnostic" Spreads Misinformation About Atheists
2007-09-03 14:36:00
If you haven't yet heard about John Humphrys' new book, In God We Doubt, you will soon enough. This book is going to generate considerable discussion throughout the secular community. You see, Humphrys has decided to attack both believers and those mythical "militant atheists." Not surprisingly, he seems to have little idea what atheism means or what atheists believe (and do not believe) about religion. The following is based on an excerpt of Humphrys' book printed in TimesOnline. After recounting his unsuccessful quest to find a religion he could accept, Humphrys tries to make a case for agnosticism, or at least for the existence of agnostics:What surprised me is how many think of themselves as neither believers nor atheists but doubters. They, too, are sincere. Devout sceptics, if you like. And many of them feel beleaguered. I’m with them. SINCE starting to write my book, I have fallen into the habit of asking almost everyone I meet if they believe in God. And here’s the interes ...

Article About Minnesota Atheists
2007-09-03 08:20:00
The Free Press (Mankato, MN) published a nice article mentioning Minnesota Atheists. Not only is the coverage positive, but the folks they quote actually get the definition of atheism correct. Outstanding and all too rare. Check it out here.Tags: Minnesota, Minnesota atheists, atheist, atheism

Proof That Our Work is Far From Finished
2007-09-03 06:22:00
With recent bouts of good news regarding various defeats and high-profile hypocrisies of Christian extremists, it would be easy to fall into complacency. To buffer against such a temptation, one merely has to examine a recent federal court ruling upholding the "under god" lunacy in the Texas pledge of allegiance.I realize that it seems overwhelmingly obvious to those of us in the reality-based community that teachers should not be allowed to lead public school children in a ritual to pay homage to supernatural entities. Such an endorsement of religion is absurd and should not be permitted to continue. Sadly, conservative "activist" judges have decided that "voluntary" pledge recitation is perfectly reconcilable with the Constitution.A federal district judge ruled against David Wallace Croft and his wife, Shannon, who sought a preliminary injunction because the Texas Legislature recently added the words "one state under God" to the state Pledge. Solicitor General Ted Cruz argued on the ...

Accused of a Crime? Christian? Don't Worry.
2007-09-02 14:13:00
Being accused of a crime is no picnic, especially if it looks like you're probably guilty. You're screwed, right? Not necessarily. If you are religious enough, there are at least three things you can do which might help. And even if they don't help, they will entertain the rest of us. After all, that has to be worth something.Announce that you've found Jee-zuhs. Rational folks may see this tactic for what it is, but you may fool some of the people who actually believe this nonsense.Blame Satan. I know, it is hard to believe that this could be taken seriously in our modern world. Still, this can earn you points with an audience not used to thinking critically.Grab someone's junk. This will probably make things worse for you, but you'll be able to provide the rest of us with the joy of seeing "scrotum" in the title of some news articles.

Jewish Extremism
2007-09-02 08:32:00
Believers love to insist that they are given a bad name by extremist fringe groups and that it is not fair to generalize from such groups to the larger community of believers. Okay, then what are we to do when a particularly influential and widely admired religious leader puts his foot in his mouth?Ovadia Yosef, described as "a highly respected religious scholar among Jews of Middle Eastern descent," has made controversial statements to the effect that Israeli soldiers were killed in battle because they were not sufficiently religious. It is nice to know that the Jewish community has their own Pat Robertson!"Is it any wonder if, heaven forbid, soldiers are killed in a war?" he said, "when they don't observe the Sabbath, they don't observe the Torah, they don't pray every day, they don't put on phylacteries every day. Is it any wonder that they're killed? It's no wonder."With the focus of America squarely on Islamic extremism and the focus of this blog on Christian extremism, one ...

Rest Stop Sex
2007-09-01 13:15:00
If one of the signs of wisdom involves a recognition of how little one actually knows, then I suppose I have considerable wisdom. In the time since news of Sen. Larry Craig's (R-Idaho) arrest broke, I have been reminded of just how little I know about gay culture. Virtually every news outlet has been running stories of an epidemic of gay rest stop sex. I had no idea that anything like this existed! How could I have lived in ignorance for this long?I've had a love of learning for as long as I can remember. I thoroughly enjoyed my formal education, but even then, I recognized that I wanted to continue learning throughout my life. Learning was not to be something that stopped when school ended; it would be a life-long pursuit. I suppose this drive explains a great deal about my pursuit of a career in science and even my arrival at atheism. Given the beauty and complexity of the natural world, it seems absurd to posit supernatural explanations. There is too much within nature to understa ...

Hurricane Katrina: Two Years Later
2007-09-01 05:56:00
I sat down to write a post on the two year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina just as I did for the one year anniversary, but I was too mad to write anything that day. I wanted whatever I would write to be more than a rant. I decided to take some extra time to evaluate the progress, check some sources, and make sure that I was providing accurate information. This may be late, but it is no less heartfelt. And yes, I'm still mad.The community in which I reside, some 60 miles inland from the Gulf Coast, has recovered well in the past two years. There has been significant progress, especially during the past year. We have absorbed several thousand additional residents, displaced by the storm, and this has helped to fuel rapid business growth. Money has poured into the area, and although important questions have been raised about where the money has been spent, there have been some undeniable benefits. For example, several new restaurants and retail stores have opened and appear to be doing ...

How Should a Journalist Cover Christian Extremists?
2007-08-31 06:15:00
It was not long ago that American journalists were expected to approach stories with some measure of objectivity. Editors wielded great power behind the scenes, and their bias could creep in as they decided what was newsworthy, however, news columns were clearly separated from opinion columns, and anchors were clearly distinguished from pundits. Anchors and print columnist were generally expected to use a tone of objectivity without their personal opinions shaping the content they were responsible for reporting.Times have changed to the point where we now tolerate neo-conservative propaganda masquerading as news while Anderson Cooper is praised for his emotional expressions while reporting on Hurricane Katrina. This is not an encouraging trend, and I am increasingly disturbed by a progressive erosion in the factual content of the information American citizens receive. When information is replaced with propaganda, our very democracy is threatened. With these concerns in mind, it should b ...

Agreeing to Disagree
2007-08-30 05:37:00
Most of my close friends are Christians, and I've certainly had my share of good friends who were...(gasp)...Republicans. I suppose that we've generally accomplished this through implicit agreements that certain topics are off limits. Other times, we'll discuss something briefly, disagree and realize the futility of persuading the other party, and then agree to disagree, setting the topic aside.A Load of Bright just did an interesting post on the subject of agreeing to disagree, and I think it warrants comment. The just of the post is that it isn't always easy to agree to disagree - sometimes one wants to continue the argument, risking being called "a bad sport" or worse. Often, one must make a judgment call as to whether the disagreement is genuinely unresolvable or whether the other party is merely hiding being the agreeing to disagree suggestion so as not to give serious reconsideration of his or her position. What is not directly addressed in the post and what I believe to be cr ...
