Coming Out Godless
2007-08-09 17:37:00
Well, I know I've dipped into this before in other posts. But I guess I'll elaborate.I grew up pretty much secular/agnostic, but essentially went with the flow growing up. Looking back, I remember reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in school (public) and now resent it. I never gave any thought to religion or spirituality until I started doing drugs (namely LSD) in college (Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale). I'll add that I haven't traveled down that road in quite a long time.Religion was always a non-issue up until that point.I've dabbled in mostly new age and pagan stuff; Wicca and Qabala for the most part. With all seriousness I was considering Qabala to be a system I could believe in, down to getting the robes, athame, and accessories. Then, I met my wife and all that dwindled away being replaced by agnosticism. My in-laws are church-goers and I went to Christmas with them for a few years (Methodist). I didn't care for it and knew it was a bunch of crap, my wife knew I felt tha ...
Evangelism

Persuading your fellow human being to "know" god and accept the gospel as truth. What gospel? Who's gospel?Whatever...In essence some people may genuinely be concerned about dying, as they probably should be. We all are. Religion is about the afterlife. That mysterious netherworld that EVERYBODY seeks to explain, yet never can hit the nail on the head.Oh, yes...faith, I forget. When you have faith you have hit that particular nail dead center. No ifs, ands or buts. Here lies the root of the atheist dilemma. Not, the particular and specific argument of whether a god exists or not, but tackling that elusive "barrier": belief and non-belief.Essentially it comes down to one very simple question. Who's right?Who in their right mind has the very simple answer? Too many people think they do. If you don't agree (be you a believer or not) then invariably you are wrong. Never mind that a great many people are pacifist believers (they are the sheep), but take into consideration the dynamic beli ...
Religion and science debates
2007-08-06 18:20:00
NOT!!! NO!! NADA! NO COMPRENDE!!!Nothing grinds me more than people (Christians and ex-Christians) debating the relevance of the existence of a god in relation to science. It is not even relevant.Any such debate is philosophical...P-H-I-L-O-S-O-P-H-I-C-A-L!!!Tying such a debate to a scientific forum is at best irrelevant and at worst counter-productive.Science = evidence. PHYSICAL evidence!!! Something you can feel and touch and hear, smell, see and otherwise relate to through the physical senses.Science is NOT philosophical. If something exists outside of our sensory perception it CANNOT be known or explained by the scientific method. Simple? Hell yes!The scientific method steps outside of philosophy. And I think a great many people just aren't "into" science enough to frickin' "get it". Including the moron who came up with ID.Intelligent Design is a freakin' philosophy. NOT A SCIENCE!!!Mathematics is a science: 2 + 2 = 4? Well, maybe not...It's possible that some unknown force de ...
I feel sincerely sorry for people...
2007-08-02 16:40:00
...for allowing themselves to be foolish. Foolish in believing in a lie. I'm not talking of a little white lie, I'm talking of a lie on the grandest scale. In my last post Rudy commented and was attempting to present his explanation of gods existence and how he CHOOSES you to believe in him, through some kind of "code".I do feel sorry for people. Really, I do. And I understand that it is human nature to be fallible, I include myself. That's what science is ultimately about. To explain the falsehoods (or truths even) that what we have been led to believe that are right and true may in fact be otherwise...or, conversely, right on the mark. The lie is this: that Jesus lived and breathed and was the son of a god. There is no historical evidence to prove otherwise. On the contrary there are archaeological findings that, if not to prove, then point towards a centuries long fabrication of the very existence of a man who was molded after another who many consider mythological.Enough said. I to ...
What's wrong with being an atheist?
2007-08-01 17:39:00
There's so much heated debate going on these days about atheist ideology concerning, especially, the existence of a god. What gets people so fired up about it? Including myself at times, though I no longer wish to participate in such speculation. My particular quarrel is this: Why do we even have such debates? Simple; somebody is or thinks the other "side" is wrong.Additionally, some people of faith view atheists as worm-dirt and/or have this attitude of "You'll see. When you're in hell" and others simply feel sorry for you and offer to pray for your soul.I'll now continue within the Christian context because I don't know any Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists or any other people of faith. So, I'll refer to the most benign example of "praying for your soul". Obviously you've told the person you don't believe in a god. What's so hard to understand that you feel it is completely unnecessary and banal for somebody to pray for you. Either the believer is sincerely concerned for your salvati ...
