Cillian Murphy: role research made me an atheist
2007-09-08 15:16:00
Tuesday April 3rd, 2007 at 11:18 am by Lucy 28 days Later star Cillian Murphy has revealed that working on new Danny Boyle film Sunshine has caused him to lose his last bit of faith that there is a God. Cillian spent time with a number of scientists in preparation for his role in the film and said recently: “I was agnostic before this film. Now I’m very much an atheist.” “Not just because I spent time with these guys - they just confirmed what I’d always suspected.” “For me, the film ultimately is a battle between science and religion, or science instead of fundamentalism.”Source: Cillian Murphy: role research made me an atheist » Fametastic ...

Michigan Attorney Goes to City Hall To Challenge Arabic School in Brooklyn & Where Is The ACLU?
2007-09-06 12:18:00
NEW YORK — An attorney representing the Thomas More Law Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, scaled the steps of City Hall yesterday to oppose the new Khalil Gibran International Academy (KGIA), a public school that opened this week in Brooklyn.“We are concerned that the city is setting up a segregated, separate but equal public school system: one for Islam and another for everyone else,” Rooney said.Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of the center said the school “lends itself to subtle and covert influence of these young impressionable children.”more from source: Brooklyn Daily Eagle :: Brooklyn SPACEOnto the first quote. If this were a Christian school I doubt very highly that the Thomas More Law Center would be stepping in in the capacity that they are at this moment. And the second quote. Does anybody see the irony of this statement? It would be ok, I'm sure, if we were to insert "Christian" after influence.§Now that Dhabah aka Debbie Almontaser has resigned as th ...

There is a god! and...
2007-08-29 19:07:00
His name is...her name is...it's name is...Oh, forget it.There is a philosophical barrier between those of faith and those without. This is a no-brainer, of course. There are those of us [atheists] who have crossed the barrier of the religious divide and...are...just there. After lifelong indoctrination most of the atheist bloggers here have shed their skin and moved on.* What is hard to grasp is theists see the divide but is as yet a fuzzy, incomprehensible horizon. Am I making any sense here? Why is that horizon so fuzzy and incomprehensible? What is so hard about realizing that there is no god or supernatural beings outside of our selves? Only one explanation comes to my mind. Need."Born again" atheists sure the hell know all about the role of religion in there lives, yet theists can not possibly look in the direction the infidel has traversed. Most atheists have "been there" (it's not like atheists have just cropped up out of nowhere or were churned out of some atheist factory), ...

Pro-Lifer Violently Assaulted Outside Abortion Clinic, Police Take Time After Repeat 911 CallsBy Elizabeth O'Brien ROCKFORD, Illinois, August 23, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A peaceful pro-life witness was violently assaulted outside an abortion site on Tuesday. Police responded late to his 911 after he was beaten by an unknown visitor to the clinic.more...I wouldn't mind some help verifying this one.Now. You know right off the bat that something stinks about this article. Mrs. O'Brien states the pro-lifer "was violently assaulted," and "was beaten." Not allegedly as she should have written.I think I'd be pissed to. It's hard enough to come to the decision of an abortion let alone have somebody standing outside a clinic telling you it's immoral and against god, even if the person simply asks that you pray with them that in itself sends a clear signal. Also, after twenty minutes of being "violently beaten" you'd think the guy'd be in a hospital. And there must have been reasonable ...

Freethinking?
2007-08-21 17:56:00
What does it mean? Pretty simple I guess. Thinking freely disregarding indoctrination or any hindrance to the free exercise thereof. Sweet, I just made that up.Now, recently a blogger "infiltrated" the Atheist Blogroll because of this loophole. Because the Atheist Blogroll was open to freethinkers (not anymore, I know). What got me thinking about this is the Rationalist International website. It's chock full more of freethinkers than actual atheists. You know, people who buck the system speaking their mind yet get jail sentences and in some case the death penalty.I agree though. The Atheist Blogroll should have been for atheists alone to begin with (that's what the title entails right?) But I don't think the guy should have been derided the way he was (I've read some of the comments regarding this). He was treated like an interloper breaking into someones house. Maybe some of you feel this way but I think opposing view points spark meaningful debate. And more to the point; This guy ...

Oops, check before you forward to all
2007-08-20 05:53:00
God is the biggest help in the World. I claim it for you - now claim it for me. God has more than a thousand ways to provide for us, that we know nothing about. Here is your financial blessing! It's a simple prayer, you got 30 Seconds? Don't sleep on this...Someone recently read this for the first time and received exactly enough for a $0 balance on all credit cards. If you need a financial blessing, continue reading this e-mail. Heavenly Father, most Gracious and Loving God, I pray to you that you abundantly bless my family and me. I know that you recognize, that a family is more than just a mother, father, sister, brother, husband and Wife, but all who believe and trust in You. GOD, I send up a prayer request for financial blessing for not only the person who sent this to me, but for me and all that I have forwarded this message on to. And that the power of joined prayer by those who believe and trust in you is more powerful than anything.! I thank you in advance for yo ...

Right and Wrong...Does it Come from God?
2007-08-13 18:29:00
If you said yes...horse shit. The irony here is that with my simple succinct answer I have explained why I think that religion itself is not the root of all our ills (a catalyst certainly), but not the root of the crucial problems facing humanity today. Well, what is it? Us.Why did I simply say: horse shit? Because I don't believe in a god. While I don't believe in a god it is veritably impossible for me to ascribe a "moral code" to him/her/it.When somebody believes in a god or higher power that influences mankind, they also believe that this higher power influences atheists as well, regardless of what we think or "believe". After all, there are no atheists in fox-holes, right? What the fuck ever.Back to the catalyst argument. Religion seems to have polarized people, hell not just atheists. I would say atheists are the least polarized about religion. We're not out there bombing abortion clinics and killing in the name of atheism. And anybody who counters with the Hitler/Stalin/Mao ar ...

...by my fellow countrymen. I'm also frightened. This country is getting very intolerant. Why? I guess that's what happens when our government feeds fear to the masses. When people feel vulnerable they lash out and otherwise become isolationist, shutting out everything for fear that...I don't know, they might find out that there really is no enemy from without. The enemy is within. Some links:Idaho congressman disturbed by Hindu prayer in Senate, election of Muslim to House (OneNewsNow.com) the disturbing part about this article are the comments ...

Response: A Letter to an Atheist - PART II: Can We be Good without God?
2007-08-10 17:11:00
Ungodly Cynic said (modified):I might disagree with the morality/survival argument. Does anyone here truly believe that we're not destroying the planet? Where's our sense of right and wrong in this regard? Also, we enable the confinement and torture of animals in order to satiate an irrelevant industry that has lied to the public and manipulated the government. You know, the so-called "food pyramid". Human beings are not a species that requires the consumption of meat, and we are the only species on the earth that makes a choice to consume milk into adulthood. Yet, we allow factory farming of livestock that is clearly unethical. Is it immoral? Depends on who declares what is right and wrong. Apparently it's "right" in the sense that people don't give a rat's ass about other species on this planet and that it's okay to allow the degradation, torture and in some cases the extinction of other species because some asshole somewhere spread the word that humans are the pinnacle of life ...
