New Labour Day Meaning
2007-09-02 21:44:00
This weekend is the final weekend before many people in North America return to school. This year however, many people will be working thanks to the new holiday/Sunday shopping laws (or lack there of). Next month will also mark the one year anniversary of retail locations being allowed to choose their own hours.Every holiday this issue seems to resurface. The Halifax Shopping Center decided to open up for the Labour Day holiday but later reversed their decision. Mic Mac Mall and WalMart however, have decided to remain open on the day meant to honor the worker.Sunday shopping and holiday shopping should be considered as two different topics. I believe in Sunday shopping however I also believe that all stores (regardless of their size), should honor statutory holidays. It should not be limited only to retail but any location which does not provide a vital service.A holiday is meant to celebrate an important occasion. There is no reason the malls can not agree to close since they now have ...

Deadline For Gossiping Senior Passes
2007-09-01 06:29:00
Mary Vaughn was handed a three month notice to vacate her home in Northwood due to excessive swearing and gossiping. The three months have just passed and now Mary is refusing to leave. No actions have been taken just yet, but she is risking police action.Dictionary.com defines gossip as:"Idle talk or rumor, esp. About the personal or private affairs of others"By this definition we are all guilty at some point of the same thing. Every newspaper or blog is guilty and should be evicted from their homes. Northwood has taken it upon themselves to create a catch all so they can evict any tenant in the future.Dictionary.com also defines swearing as:"To use profane oaths or language"This is another vague description because a word can be considered profane by some people and not others. I do not consider "damn" to be profane however, may religious people would. What Northwood is doing is laying the groundworks for the eviction of any tenant which the residence manager dislikes. It could create ...

A Culture Of Moderation
2007-08-30 22:24:00
Nova Scotia now has a plan to lower alcohol consumption among the people in the province. Funny enough, it goes against the changes made only a week ago.A 2005 report claimed that alcohol abuse was causing the province $419 million a year in health care, police work and other social costs. Hoe they come up with an actual dollar amount is beyond me, but it was enough to make the government react. The first step will be to create an Alcohol Advisory Policy Review Board. Another useless board which will cost us even more money then we are likely to save. There will also be 5 new community based positions available under the strategy. Now alcohol abuse is creating new jobs. There will also be advertising campaigns which will attempt to take away from the glamorous lifestyle of being drunk. Don't these people realize that we are all immune to advertisements? I can't even recall any of the ads on the dozens of billboards I pass every day.And finally they want to limit access to alcohol subst ...

Dwight D'Eon Leaves Idol
2007-08-29 09:46:00
Dwight D'Eon became the latest Nova Scotia to come so close to winning the Canadian Idol competition After Monday nights vote, he was sent home earning him a forth place finish. Had it not been for the theme show, which was way out of character for him, he may have been able to go another round or two farther.Gary Beals started the trend by placing second in the first ever Canadian Idol series. The Metro Center was packed that night in hopes of a win which never happened.Chad Doucette then revived our hopes in season 3 by placing forth in the competition. His close finish was almost unexpected due to his eccentric style. The reason we have not won the top prize is because few Nova Scotian's fall in to the "pop" category which dominates idol. Our musicians have their own styles, their own sounds and their own images. Halifax is widely known as one of the great indy music scenes in North America. The close finishes show we have some great talent around the province. Best of luck to Dwigh ...

Dog The Bounty Hunter Dogs Fans
2007-08-28 06:59:00
Ches Brushett (Dog The Bounty Hunter), was in town to give an inspirational speech at the Metro Center. People who purchased the $100 VIP tickets were shocked to learn that their VIP pass was basically changed to a standard pass.First of all, why would someone go see Dog The Bounty Hunter for inspiration? He did have a bad upbringing and managed to overcome it, but what qualifies him for this role? I would not pay $100 to see some T.V. figure talk about something he/she is not qualified to talk about.Putting that aside, fans were expecting a chance to meet Dog, get an autograph and a personal picture with him. During the show they were advised that they would receive the autographed book but nothing more. Some people are even questioning if the autograph was real. All fans who spent the big bucks for the show should demand a refund on the VIP pricing. The promoters and Ches Brushett did not live up to their agreement and therefor took money for services which were not provided. Thanks to ...

How To Beat Stress
2007-08-25 12:50:00
Many of us, especially myself, have lifestyles which keep us constantly on the move. A lot of my time is dedicated to everyone else which is why I sometimes like to take an hour or two for myself.Saturday I decided to take a walk on the trail near Dartmouth Crossings. It stretches from Lake Charles all the way to Lake MicMac. Now I am seriously considering making it a regular routine. The trail is easy on the feet thanks to the maintenance which keeps the path smooth. I walked for an hour and when I got back was tired but not sore. While this is a great quality, it was not the best one.I am going to use the term "visual fatigue", which this trail limits. Visual Fatigue is when you see the same thing so much that you loose interest. I never saw so much of nature in one area then I did on this path. There were chipmunks feeding out of peoples hands, a canal system running along the path, swimming holes, camping areas, benches overlooking the lake, etc...I highly recommend walking as a way ...

Reuse Your Booze
2007-08-23 21:03:00
Wine lovers rejoice New liquor laws now allow restaurants to recork your bottle to take it home with you. In some restaurants you will even be allowed to bring your own bottle with you. It may seem silly to some people, but liquor lovers have wanted this for a long time. Before these changes, bottles were rarely sold. People who did buy them were forced to drink the entire bottle then cab home. Most people simply ordered a glass, but this option is not always available for the expensive wines. They government is also allowing fire halls and legions to stay open an hour later than before. There will also be less paper work for store owners. In a semi related story, Brooklyn Nova Scotia has voted to remove their "dry" status.Glad to see some changes being made which will improve the fine wine experience. Hopefully they will also decide to up the cost of drinking and driving for those who decide not to take home the bottle.

Gas Price Prediction For August 24th 2007

Backshift Blues
2007-08-21 20:34:00
After the brutal assault on a middle aged woman in Dartmouth, people are beginning to question if backshift workers should be allowed to work by themselves. The woman is currently in the hospital with life threatening injuries.Having people work by themselves at any time of the day is a bad idea, let alone the night watch. I firmly believe that the employer needs to take steps to keep the workers safe during their shift and would like to see a law such as this one created. Ultimately it will not stop incidents such as this one but it would go a long way in deterring criminals.Employers would also be in a better position to protect their property One person working alone has ample opportunity to steal items which fly under the radar. By having the second employee on watch there would be a higher cost in salaries but there could be a savings in property loss.I have worked the backshift by myself at a gas station and I can honestly say that it can be a scary situation. Anyone working with ...

Metro Transit Takes Strike Steps
2007-08-20 11:39:00
A bad situation could appear thanks to a 98% vote to turn down the latest offer to Metro Transit employees. While a strike is not guaranteed it is possible and could take affect as early as tomorrow. The strike would cause many people with fewer options to make it to work or meet important appointments. Thankfully the employees seem to know how bad things could become. The quotes in the media seem to lean towards this being a negotiation tactic and a strike will only take place if a suitable agreement is not reached. Talks are still ongoing at this time. The current dispute centers around wages and the amount of hours in between routes. I will update this post as more is learned.UPDATE 08/23/07 - Talks will continue sometime next week to allow time for both sides look at the others proposal.

The Canadian Blood Service Wants You
2007-08-20 04:00:00
Levels of blood storage have reached a nine year low, and the Canadian Blood Services needs you to donate. There is a desperate need for all blood types from anyone willing to help out. The reason for the shortage has been attributed to the aging donators who are slowly passing away. Younger people typically do not make special trips on a regular basis to the blood drives. Now with more need put on the system, there simply is not enough supply remaining. If you are able to donate please make it part of your regular routine. You never know when you may be in a hospital needing blood. For more information call 1-888-2-donate.

Blogging Our Way To The Future
2007-08-17 12:01:00
I would like to go off topic for today to speak about a guest which appeared on the Colbert Report last evening. Andrew Keen spoke about how the Internet is destroying our culture by allowing armatures to take on the role of a professional. He also believes that the Internet is a breeding ground for people stealing other artists work. Listen to this quote:"We need objective professional journalists who responsibly collect the news rather than anonymous bloggers who are often in pay of corporations and foreign governments."I have been blogging for over a year and I can say that I have not seen a penny from any company or foreign government (I know I have ads on my site but I have never made any money from them). I would also trust hearing news more from someone who loves writing about their topic as opposed to a journalist who is paid to sway the story in a direction which benefits their sponsors. I can also say that I am in no way anonymous since my name appears in the URL of this site ...
