Mandatory Retirement Against Human Rights Code
2007-10-24 03:14:00
John Cline was a substitute teacher for the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board, until he turned the age of 65. At that point he was removed from their active substitute teacher list thanks to their policy which forced all people of this age to retire. Mr. Cline went to the human rights board and they agreed that this policy discriminated against him based on his age. The school board has been ordered to pay $13,000 in damages and lost wages and have since removed this policy. Forced retirement is a policy which has been considered by many companies, however they may be forced to reconsider after this case has come to and end. Forcing people to leave their work because of their age is the definition of discrimination. Why is someone at the age 64 qualified to teach, but someone at the age of 65 is not? Nothing biological happens during this birthday celebration which would affect a persons performance. Age affects each person differently and having a magic number where you mus ...
More On Bill Casey - Executive Suspended
2007-10-22 05:47:00
An executive in northern Nova Scotia was suspended over the weekend due to his "support" for Bill Casey who was kicked out of caucus earlier in the year. The executive was told to either find a new candidate for the position or to quit his position. The executive chose to call for a public meeting to get the opinion of the voters before deciding. This type of forced politics is not a game that should be played. Bill Casey was kicked out of caucus because he was vocal about our province loosing the original Atlantic Accord. He stood up for what he believed in and was kicked out because of it. Now an executive wants the publics opinion on how to handle the situation and he is suspended as well. These moves turn me off on Canadian politics. I do not want to see a united team of politicians making decisions on how to run the country, I want to see a diverse team of people express their concerns and debate what is the best way to progress. It seems as if Stephan Harper is not ...
Prince BrunsScotia Land
2007-10-19 09:26:00
This came to my email box a day or so ago. It appears as if there is once again interest in joining the four Atlantic Provinces in to one more stable province. Below is the email which was released. The Atlantica Party today released a major update to the party's policy platform including a call for a debate on uniting the four Atlantic Canadian provinces into a single province in Canada. "It has been almost forty years since Union has been discussed and we think it is time to re-examine the issue," said Jonathan Dean, leader of the party. "Union is a tangible step forward strengthening Atlantic Canada's present and future." In addition to advancing the Union debate the Atlantica Party will also reform the provincial political system to encourage freer debate, better decision making, and establish stricter public oversight of government operations. The Atlantica Party will also institute several direct democracy tools for use by citizens. The Atlantica ...

Our Environmental Initiatives
2007-10-15 07:52:00
Today is part or a world wide initiative to bring awareness to issues concerning the environment on the blogosphere. It is being called "Blog Action Day" and I have decided to take part as well. I am going to review some of the ideas our province has used to take steps in saving our environment and what else we could be doing. The green cart pickup has been one of the most successful programs thus far. All compostable material is placed in a separate bin to be diverted away from the landfills. Many families take part however there are some that feel it takes too much time to become involved with. I would like to see more awareness created for this project as well as a website created which breaks down exactly what can and can not be placed inside our green carts. One of the newer plans is to convince people to use more fuel efficient automobiles. A tax has been issued on cars such as the "Hummer" which do not meet environmental standards. There is also a discount on ...
Atlantic Accord Resolution
2007-10-13 15:18:00
So the drama of the Atlantic Accord may have finally come to and end. Rodney MacDonald and Stephan Harper signed a new deal which may be better or worse than the previous one. The deal will have us gain less money in the short term, but if offshore business does well then we could end up with hundreds of millions more than planned. Rodney MacDonald may have went against the wishes of the public by having a new deal created which differs from the old one, but it was probably our only option. Stephan Harper has stuck to his guns and in the end I am confident that this version of the Accord is still good for the province. The main goal of becoming self efficient has still been met. The signing has also put peace back in to the relationship between the federal and provincial Tory party. Newfoundlands Danny Williams is still upset and demanding the old deal, but now Nova Scotia can move on and get back to business. The new Accord may do well for our premiers career since he has proven him ...

Nurses Protest For Their Right To Strike
2007-10-10 04:04:00
The nurses union is at it again demanding they keep their right to strike during negotiations. Without this right they feel that they would not be treated fairly when making alterations to their contract. The government wants to protect the safety of the public by having workers available at all time.Putting lives at risk for a contract negotiation is dangerous and should be stopped. I know for a fact that the nurses would take great strides to ensure the publics safety if a strike were to occur, but eventually it would not be enough. Some poor person would miss a test and not receive the correct diagnosis in time and could eventually loose their life. It is not that far of a stretch to believe it could happen.I have said many times in the past that unions use the strike threat way to often. It should only be used as a last case resort to get something essential to the employees. Ignoring nurses, a similar policy could be used for other industries. Laying out certain circumstances in w ...
Radio Stations In Halifax
2007-10-08 03:57:00
Even with the addition of two radio stations in Nova Scotia, there is still a huge gap in the music we tune our car radios in to. The selection is very limited and the stations play the same songs over and over again. Radio used to have the market beat on local talent, but unless you have sold an "x" amount of CD's you can not get a break.Local bands and artists have moved on to the internet to create their own fan base which is a shame. Having a global audience is great but unless they can have a concert where people want to see them they will not make any money. In Halifax our selection of radio includes:1) C100 fm - 100.1 - top 40 hits of mainly slow music2) Q104 - 104.3 - oldies music3) Hal Fm - 89.9 - more oldies music4) Z103 - 103.5 - hip hop and dance music5) Sun Fm - 97.5 - slow songs from all decades6) Country - 101.9 - top country hitsNova Scotians are sheltered from the great underground scene on all of these stations. Even worse is the fact that we are sheltered from genre ...

City Considers Putting People In The Dark
2007-10-02 07:44:00
A new type of regulation is being proposed today which would put Halifax residents in the dark. The concern is that some businesses (mainly gas stations), are too bright in the night time. My suggestion to these people is to Lighten Up.Regulating the brightness of the lights around metro could cause more crime to go unnoticed. Especially after the unfortunate incident last month on Portland Street in Dartmouth where a woman was beaten very badly during an evening shift. Turning down the lights would only help such crimes in the future. It would make sense from an environmental stand point to conserve energy, but that argument is weak at best. The energy output mainly depends on the type of bulb used and not the level it is set at.There is already too much regulation these days on issues that city council has no part in controlling. Why add to the restrictions by passing this one as well? Too many regulations is bad for business and could scare new employers away. Let the business decide ...

Residents of the Cole Harbour and Eastern Passage area will elect a new MLA tomorrow to fill the void when Kevin Deveaux resigned.
