Celine Dion Feels Unwelcomed In Halifax
2007-11-21 12:08:00
Celine Dion was scheduled to play at the Halifax Commons next year. She later backed out because she felt that she was not wanted in Halifax. An article in the Halifax Daily was singled out which was titled "Like her or not, it's good news"There are some negative comments towards the singer, however the article is based around how it will be good for the city. Here are a few of the quotes that writer David Rodenhiser had to say:"A successful Dion performance here will actually help build Halifax's reputation as a place for A-list artists, helping us secure more rock megaconcerts in the future""A lot of people will travel a long way and spend a lot of money to see Dion."Any of the negative comments mentioned were obviously an opinion and the article clearly expressed that. Why would Celine Dion or her husband would be offended enough by one persons remarks to deny an entire city of a performance? If you ask me.....This is an opinion Celine.....the cancellation shows a lack of respect ...

Right Whales Face Security Threat
2007-11-19 07:17:00
The U.S. Navy is looking to implement a sonar security wall that could affect the Bay of Fundy. The sonar equipment would detect enemy ships and submarines in the Atlantic. This is the same equipment which was stopped from use in the Pacific United States due to concerns about the safety of the marine life.
The sonar equipment has been known to cause internal bleeding and the "Bends" in whales. The use of this equipment could cause more damage to the declining population of species such as the endangered Right Whale. The current population of the Right Whale is estimated to be around 300.
The equipment itself would be installed off the shore of North Carolina's Cape Hattaras. It will be another 4-5 years before it would take place, assuming they are not stopped beforehand. The U.S. Navy claims the equipment would be far enough offshore that the population of whales in the Bay Of Fundy would not be harmed.
Even the slightest effect could cause the extinction of the R ...

Al MacInnis Inducted In The Hockey Hall Of Fame
2007-11-13 09:43:00
Nova Scotia has finally got a player inside the Hockey Hall of Fame. Al MacInnis was inducted yesterday after 23 season in the National Hockey League. He ended his career with 340 goals and 934 assists in 1416 games as a defenseman.
Al MacInnis was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 1981. He was later honored as the MVP for the playoffs when the Calgary Flames won the Stanley Cup. He finished his career with the St. Louis Blues. He ranks third all time among defensemen for points and has won the hardest shot competition 7 times. He was a member of the All Star team a total of 15 times.
"We all grow up dreaming of winning a game 7 in overtime or raising the Stanley Cup over our heads, but no one pictures themselves making an acceptance speech in the hall of fame. To the people of Nova Scotia, you are my neighbors, my classmates, my relatives, my friends. You are good people. To represent you as the first person ever from Nova Scotia to be inducted in to the hockey hall of fame is ...

What Would You Do With $634 Million?
2007-11-12 08:42:00
The federal. Government has pitched $634 million towards improving the infrastructure of Nova Scotia. Priority has been put on the twinning of highway 104 in Antigonish. The money will also be used to improve road work and public transit. with all the hot topic issues in the province, what would you put $634 million towards?
Public transit is a great start. People in Metro need a better system in place to move around the city. The is also a pressing need of moving people within the province. A better system to allow people to move from rural areas to urban areas is a must. Residents in rural Nova Scotia need access to urban areas for many reasons including medical appointments. The current system does not provide easy transport for these people.
One investment we should also consider a priority is the repair and replacement of bridges across the province. It was not that long ago that emergency repairs were ordered on the East River Bridge in Sheet Harbour. This is not the only agin ...

Big Advertising
2007-11-10 17:59:00
There has been a push over the last week to have store owners remove large signs from their business. A bylaw passed last year states that advertisements must be less than 12 feet long. The law has places such as the Freak Lunchhouse on Barrington Street upset.
Small business owners claim they will loose money due to the lack of exposure. Some owners believe that the law should be changed to reflect how the sign looks as opposed to it's size. The problem with that is there is no way to regulate the law. What looks out of place to one person could be perfectly fine with others.
There is so much advertising in today society. it has come to the point that unless you have a big budget, it is hard to compete. Many consumers won't go to a small store they never heard of when they can travel to a box store for the same thing. Advertising is crucial to get ahead but there does need to be some regulations in place.
The regulations should be put on the large companies to level the ...

Sheila Fougere For Mayor Of Halifax
2007-11-07 16:22:00
I recently had the opportunity to have a meeting with the latest person to announce a run at Peter Kelly's position as Mayor of Halifax. Sheila Fougere has been on the City Council for the last 7 years and has decided that she will run for the position in 2008.I asked her what some of the biggest problems Halifax faces at this point."One of the things that is important to me right up front is transportation and I don't mean just public transportation. A mean a whole fully integrated system where people can move around easily and businesses can move their goods around easily and right now we don't have that. We need a bigger investment in public transportation.""We also have an enormous harbour which we constantly underutilized. It's ice free and in my 50 years of living in Halifax it has only ever had ice in it once. That is an opportunity I think we are missing out on."She then went on to describe how the position differs from other levels of government."At the municipal level we ...

Hurricane Noel
2007-11-04 18:18:00
Nova Scotia has survived yet another major weather system. The remains of Hurricane Noel slammed in to the Atlantic provinces causing a fair amount of damage.
Over 125000 people were without power and some may have to wait 3 days before it returns. Power lines littered areas like Eastern Passage and trees blocked driveways across the province.
The good news, if there is any, is that the public was prepared. Since the strike by Hurricane Juan in 2003, people have been a little shell shocked. Every major system causes line ups at big box stores everywhere. Candles and bottled water were in short supply.
I was out during the brunt of the storm. At 3am the lightning was spectacular to watch over the horizon. The darkness and power outage made it impossible to see more than a few feet in front of you at any time. The winds reached 117 km/h at some points overnight and are being blamed for most of the damage.
One report that never ceases to amaze me is the amount of people reported o ...

Hurricane Noel Hits Nova Scotia
2007-11-03 18:27:00
The deadliest hurricane of this season is now hitting Nova Scotia. Winds as high as 140 kms could be felt overnight tonight. It may no longer be classified as a hurricane, but the effects are still amazing. Thunder and lightning are lighting up the sky as I write. No power outages have been reported as of yet however they are expected. Have supplies near by and keep safe. I will write a full report tomorrow.

Doctor Shortage Reaches New Heights
2007-10-30 06:05:00
Amherst's Highland View Regional Hospital has been forced to close for a full week. The three internal medicine doctors they employ are only willing to be on call one week a month. This leaves an entire week with no one available in the intensive care unit. Patients will be transferred to Halifax of Moncton.
We have heard the shortage in rural Nova Scotia is great, but we now are seeing how much trouble we are in. If an ICU is forced to close, and may have to for a week every month, then what is next? We can not transfer patients to Halifax every time there is an emergency.
The problem appears to be in the pay rate for on call doctors according to the director of public affairs for the Cumberland Health Authority. Ann Keddy states the pay is negotiated between the Doctors Nova Scotia and Capitol Health.
The province needs to soon step up and find some way to attract new doctors and keep the ones we have. Our health care system is under too much stress at the moment to continu ...

Heritage Or Progress
2007-10-29 07:25:00
The core of Halifax has lacked progress during the past decade. Many new development projects have been met by controversy from the public. The people need to soon decide if we keep our heritage or if we move towards growth.
Skyscrapers may be an eye sore, but they create new jobs and attract big business. With our current state, we can not afford to let these opportunities pass us by. Cities like New York have cashed in on these structures and we could do the same.
Elizabeth Pacey was at a meeting for the Heritage Trust. She wants the entire core designated as a heritage site. She stated: "If you bulldoze your heritage, you become just anywhere".
If we did as she proposes then how could we ever hope to grow as a community. Our heritage does not lie in century old buildings which are ready to crumble. We can grow and still keep what makes Halifax great.
Sparkey Anderson once said "people that live in the past generally are afraid to compete in the present". ...

Bus Driver Makes Students Walk
2007-10-25 06:10:00
A Ross Road school bus driver was suspended yesterday for kicking students off the bus. He will not return until an investigation is completed.
The bus had mechanical problems. He was contacting the dispatcher when the students got out of control. He then told the students to get off the bus. He later asked them all to return but some either walked home or called their parents.
The incident involved elementary and junior high students. The parents are upset that the driver expected the students to find their own way home.
Obviously these students should not be forced to find alternate ways home. They are still young and should not be left unattended, especially when their parents are unaware of it. So what action should school bus drivers be expected to take?
For starters they should attempt to diffuse the situation. Separate the students involved and tell them how you expect them to behave. Explain the rules and then move on. If this fails then how is a driver supposed to deal ...
