Fage To Remain As MLA
2007-12-19 13:03:00
Ernie Fage was found guilty of leaving the scene of an accident during an event last year. For those unfamiliar with the story behind the accident, you can check out a previous post titled "The Ernie Fage Saga".A judge has fined him $920 for leaving the scene and he has been expelled from the Tory Caucus. He will not be permitted to run as a Progressive Conservative in the next election for his riding of Cumberland North. Fage has declared he will run anyway, but as an independent. This is not the first time that Ernie Fage has been involved in a scandal which has forced him to loose his power in Nova Scotia. In 2006 he resigned due to a loan of $250,000 to a potato farmer which he stood to gain from. The Liberal Party called for an investigation due to a conflict of interest. If Fage wishes to pursue politics farther, he will need to learn quickly how to keep himself out of trouble. He has served his riding well, but has been unable to keep the spotlight off of himself and on his work. ...

The Halifax Explosion
2007-12-15 13:28:00
On December 6th 1916, the town of Halifax, Nova Scotia was hit by one of the largest explosions in history. The story begins on December 1st 1916 when the French vessel "Mont-Blanc" left New York City with cargo destined for the war in France. The cargo included the following:226,797 kg of TNT1,602,519 kg of Wet Picric Acid544,311 kg of Dry Picric Acid56,301 kg of Guncotton223,188 kg of BenzolThe ship sailed towards Halifax where it arrived on the night of December 5th. Since evening had arrived, the sip remained at sea until the following day.At 7:30am the harbour was opened and the Mont-Blanc prepared to enter. At the same time the vessel Imo was preparing to leave for New York to gather supplies for a relief effort in Belgium. The Imo left the harbour and met with another ship. They agreed to pass each other on the opposite side than is normally expected. This forced the Imo in to a lane it was not designated for and would remain in the hazy conditions. The Mont-Blanc was sailing in ...

No Smoking In Cars With Children
2007-12-14 10:57:00
Next month it will become illegal to smoke tobacco inside a car with people below the age of 18 inside. Anyone found guilty of this offense will pay a fine of $384.50. The original version of this law was passed in the town of Wolfville, but now will be in effect across the Province. The Smokers Rights group MyChoice claims this is the first step in a road which will lead to an outright ban of tobacco products. The next step would be a ban in households with minors and then the removal of the product from store shelves. An outright ban is not likely in the near future, but it is a goal worth reaching for. Tobacco products put a huge restraint on our health care spending and cost the general public a lot of money on a regular basis. The ban in automobiles with minors inside is one of the first positive moves the province has made in the fight against smokers.Previous plans were to simply up the costs per package in an attempt to convince smokers to butt out. The only thing this accomplish ...

Nova Scotia Power Can Skip Utility Board
2007-12-12 03:50:00
Nova Scotia Power will have the ability to raise and lower the costs of electricity without appearing before the Utility and Review board starting 2010. The price of electricity will rise and fall based on the costs of fossil fuels required to generate it. The Utility and Review board has warned the power company that if a trial run in April is not successful, they will reverse their decision.Nova Scotia Power has been known for their constant rate hike increases over the last few years. Since the company was privatized the focus has shifted from reliable and affordable service to profit. The Chronicle Herald has even mentioned the CEO of Emera (Nova Scotia Powers parent company) on their list of the highest paid CEO's in the province. The question is should NSP be trusted with this power (no pun intended)? If the company is completely upfront about their costs than the project could work. There should however be a review at least once a year on the price changes to ensure the publi ...

Holiday Shopping To Be Banned
2007-12-10 09:26:00
Premier Rodney MacDonald will support a ban on a topic he approved last year. Large retail stores will once again have their hours regulated by not being permitted to open on holidays. Last year they were permitted to open due to the Sunday Shopping debate. MacDonald then said he would not regulate retail location hours any longer. The turn around was to save the minority government as the Liberals and the NDP both supported the bill. Currently 7 holidays are on paper, but the Liberal and NDP parties each want a different holiday added to the list. This is the second time this week that the Premier has been forced in to a situation he was not in support of. Earlier the Premier held the debates on a ban of nursing strikes for so long that the bill was not to go up for a vote. He claims he will reintroduce it in the spring. One newspaper quoted the Premier as stating this was proof that a minority government can work for the province. This is also proof that MacDonald is loosing control of ...

A Two Tier Heath Care System
2007-12-06 00:21:00
Premier Rodney MacDonald has been hinting at the possibility of creating a private health care system. The private system would compliment the current public system to lower wait times across the province.
The benefits of a two tier system is that people who can afford to pay for services would have quick access to them. This would lower the wait times in the public system and could decrease costs to the province.
The drawback would be that professional doctors and nurses would be more likely to choose to work in the private sector for higher salaries. If this were to happen we would have an even greater decrease in services available now.
The only way a two tier system has any chance of working is to regulate the salaries of the people employed. The government would need to guarantee that the private system would in no way interfere with the free public health care now available. There should also be restrictions on how many offices are created and where they are located. A priva ...

Out In The Cold
2007-12-03 12:24:00
Last week a homeless man was denied access to a shelter due to being intoxicated and a disturbance to others. He was sent back out in to the cold -12 degree weather.Homelessness has always been a problem in the province. Many people can simply not afford to have a place to stay and support themselves. The shelters are designed to be a place of warmth and safety for these people, but are policies standing in the way of keeping them safe?If people are permitted inside these buildings when they are unable to control themselves then they become a hazard for everyone else using the shelter. It would be very difficult to expect volunteers to deal with people causing problems without putting themselves at risk at the same time. There is also the harsh truth that many homeless people turn to alcohol to help them forget their problems. It allows an escape from the reality they are forced to live with every day. Is it fair to expect all of them to stop doing a very legal action of drinking inside ...

Dartmouth Man Killed By Taser
2007-11-23 12:23:00
About 30 hours after receiving a taser shot, a Dartmouth inmate has died. The 45 year old man was arrested for an assault charge when he attempted to flee the scene. A struggle ensued and the taser was fired to subdue the man. his family claims they told police he had psychiatric problems and was not using his medication. He was sent to the hospital and cleared shortly afterwards.
The Nova Scotia Justice Minister has ordered a review on how the weapon is being used by police. This could mark the 18th death in Canada this year at the hands of a taser weapon. A recent report suggested that tasers are saving more lives than they are costing Canadians.
The taser is a valuable tool for law enforcement, however its use needs to be restricted. If a suspect is resisting arrest than a taser would subdue them. Then again a gun would also stop the suspect from fleeing but everyone knows that is extreme. The taser should be no different. It should be used when a suspect poses a very clear but ...
