MDOT and Politics- Butch Has To Go
2007-10-31 12:42:01
I used to think the office of the Attorney General was the most political in the state (that isn’t suppose to be political), but I now think MDOT takes the cake- at least with their actions of late. In all fairness, it may not be the entire department but its executive director Butch “Big Dot” Brown. Let’s look at a couple of recent events: One event that was covered in great detail was the opening of the Biloxi Bridge. The re-opening featured a large celebration party at the taxpayers tip. At the event, 5,000 copies of a book profiling all the great things Brown and Southern District Transportation Commissioner Wayne Brown (D) have done was handed out. The materials cost a little over $5,000. MDOT won’t say how much the party cost. Why is this a big deal? Because Wayne Brown is in a fight for his political life against Larry Benefield (R). Wayne Brown is the key vote in whether Butch Brown stays as head of MDOT. Benefield has promised to join Central District Transportat ...
Barbour Picks Up Daily Journal Endorsement
2007-10-31 12:04:00
About Haley and his four years of good work: Four years ago, the Daily Journal endorsed Haley Barbour for governor. We believed he could methodically and effectively move our state to a new, higher level in economic growth and jobs development in a fast-changing global economy. Barbour succeeded. The governor met our expectations in his leadership for prosperity, most notably of course in the role he played in partnership with allied Northeast Mississippi leaders to bring Toyota to the Wellspring Project megasite and in subsequent announcements of major suppliers in the region. That productivity - empowered by a vast network of contacts and an experienced negotiator’s knowledge of how to seal a deal - is the basis for our endorsement of Barbour, a Republican, for a second term. About John Arthur Eaves and his lack of ideas: Democrat John Arthur Eaves Jr., in contrast, offers only an illusory and elusive campaign of vague promises and platitudes, not leadership. ...

2007-10-29 17:27:44
The Cory Wilson campaign released this latest video spot. He is challenging Democrat Cecil Brown for the House District 66 seat. A Wilson victory would be a key vote in electing a new Speaker in two months. And for an older Wilson spot focusing on crime: ...

Wouldn’t It Be Nice?
2007-10-29 12:45:24
…If Tracy Arnold defeated Billy McCoy before he even got a chance to fight for his post as Speaker. From the Daily Journal: A political newcomer, Arnold pastors The Vineyard Church in Booneville and is the administrator of Vine Christian Academy. On his Web site, Arnold calls himself “a person with a vision for our district” and said he understands the needs of district residents of all ages - youth to senior citizens. He vows to work with community development groups to promote natural resources of the district and attract industry. Arnold’s Web site and campaign literature say he supports voter identification, opposes “any and all efforts” to raise taxes, wants legislation to keep Mississippi from becoming “a haven for illegal immigrants” and wants to encourage alternative fuel research that could benefit the state’s farmers. A note- the paper is reporting that Arnold declined to be interviewed. This is interesting, but I am wondering if he declined because ...
Ole Miss vs. State
2007-10-29 12:32:28
I don’t know if anyone who was watching the World Series last night realized this, but there was a strong Mississippi connection for the last out. The Red Sox pitcher who threw the final pitch and recorded the final out was Jonathan Pepelbon, a Mississippi State alum. And the Colorado Rockie who made the final out was Seth Smith, a Jackson native and Ole Miss alum. ...

Clarion-Ledger Endorses Tate Reeves
2007-10-29 07:37:21
Tate Reeves is the clear choice: In the 2007 state treasurer’s race, the question of who to vote for is not a difficult one. Incumbent Republican State Treasurer Tate Reeves is the clear choice Nov. 6 in his race against Democratic nominee Shawn O’Hara. Reeves should be re-elected with relative ease. He is clearly the best choice. Reeves has served the state diligently and well in watching the state’s money, serving on the boards of the state Bond Commission and the Public Employees Retirement System in this first term. The former banker and financial analyst is well-qualified. He holds a degree in economics from Millsaps College and serves as president of the National Association of State Treasurers, which indicates that at a relatively young age Reeves, 33, has earned the respect of his peers nationwide. Reeves has been a strong advocate for the state’s MPACT program that helps families save for college tuitions. He also has not been shy in expressing his opin ...
Links, Domain, E-mail Updates
2007-10-29 07:18:00
I have decided to increase my blogroll and include a number of conservative blogs that focus on a specific state as mine does. This list can be found with the other links on the left sidebar. This list does not include all of the conservative state blogs; that would be a pretty long list. Rather, these are some of my favorites and what I consider the best of the best for those states. If you feel that you’re blog should be on the list, send me an e-mail. Much like raising money on the blogs, I think the left has the clear advantage when it comes to state and local politics. I am hoping to do what little I can to change that; and for my out-of-state readers who have state blogs I encourage y’all to put up a similar easy-to-read list. ——————————————————– And for a technical note, I have added another domain name: http://majorityinmississippi.com/. For those who do enter t ...
