Gene Taylor- Leading Dem Dissenter in the House
2007-07-12 19:23:55
The New York Times ran a story earlier this week on Congressional Democrats who have broken with their party?s leadership on mainly partisan issues during the first half of this year. Topping the list of Democrats who registered the lowest party unity scores was Gene Taylor, of the Fourth Congressional District. Here are some excerpts from the Times article: ?There are members who break with their Democratic leaders and colleagues more often than most- with longtime Mississippi Rep. Gene Taylor the leading party dissident, breaking with the Democratic position on nearly a third of House votes that fell mainly along partisan lines.? ?The following is a roundup of the Democratic members with the lowest party unity scores, with summaries of their political situations back home?1. Gene Taylor, Mississippi?s 4th District (69.2 percent). Long one of the most conservative House Democrats, Taylor has dominated his heavily conservative district in southern Mississippi ? a territory that the Rep ...

Bobby Harrison had a good piece in yesterdays Daily Journal and I encourage my readers to check it out. The story focused on voters in the Northeast part of the state and their importance on statewide races- both in the primaries and especially in the general elections. The Northeast is the last truly competitive region of the state. That is because it is home to the last large chunk of white voters who are willing to give statewide Dems a look. I also wanted to add an interesting tidbit that I remember reading in the Mississippi Politics book by Andy Taggart and Jere Nash, relating to Northeast MS. When the issue of changing the state flag was put on the ballot, with the support of Gov. Musgrove, no region in the state voted more overwhelmingly for the current flag then the Northeast. What did that translate to? Musgrove went from winning 14 of the 16 Northeast counties in 1999, to just six in 2003. It is hard to tell whether that issue only hurt Musgrove, or if it still has legs th ...
