New York Times on Pepper’s Ruling
2007-07-18 12:37:53
I found this story from the New York Times and think it is a good read. This story deals with the initial ruling by Judge Pepper that party’s can close their primaries and voter ID should be enacted. It features quotes by Red & Blue bloggers Andy Taggart and Jere Nash, as well as some state legislatures.

2007-07-17 19:01:03
Note: Lee Yancey is running for the District 20 Senate seat that is being vacated by Charlie Ross. It econompasses Rankin and Madison counties. Mr. Yancey faces Bobby Blake, Harvey Dallas, and Charles Porter in the August 7 Republican primary.
Tell me about yourself.
I have earned a Bachelor’s degree from Mississippi College and a Master’s degree and a Doctorate in Leadership Administration from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. My doctoral project was on the subject of conflict management. For the last seven years, I have worked with the legislature as a consultant for the Christian Action Commission of the Mississippi Baptist Convention. I am the former president of the Choose Life Advisory Committee which has distributed over one million dollars to crisis pregnancy centers across the state. I was named Pro-Lifer of the Year in 2006 by Pro-Life Mississippi. I served on the Rankin County Republican Executive Committee from 2002-2007 and have worked as a volunte ...

Pepper Refuses Dem’s Motion to Reconsider
2007-07-17 16:27:58
Writing on the Red & Blue blog, Andy Taggart states that Judge Pepper’s has refused the Plaintiff’s Motion to Reconsider his closed primary/ voter ID ruling from a month or so ago.
However, Pepper did grant an extension until after the 2008 primaries (which will include presidential, Congressional, and Thad Cochran’s Senate seat). The 15 page opinion can be found here.

Ross Attacks Bryant
2007-07-17 12:48:54
Cotton Mouth and the MS Business Journal are featuring the new attack by Charlie Ross against Phil Bryant. Although his camp sent out the press release, it has yet to be published on Ross’s website. Here it is:
_____________________________________________________
The race for the Republican Lieutenant Governor?s nomination has revolved around a choice of which candidate is the most reliable in tough fights. A new television ad released by the Ross campaign Tuesday gives voters proof of one important difference on that score ? the two candidates? record of support for Governor Barbour.
In one of the Governor?s hardest-fought battles to date, Charlie Ross stood with the Governor in his successful effort to stop the illegal diversion of tax money to the Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi. Bryant, meanwhile, stood with Barbour?s opponent, Democrat Mike Moore, on the Partnership issue.

McCain to Thompson?
2007-07-16 20:01:52
he talks about an expected shift by the Mississippi GOP leadership from John McCain to Fred Thompson whenever he enters the presidential race. McCain was the early favorite of Trent Lott and Chip Pickering, but has fallen on hard times as his campaign is headed in the wrong direction.
Look for Thomas Colbert, Billy Mounger, and Rep. Wicker (Thompson?s cousin) to join the cause of the former Tennessee senator according to this report. However, the nominees from each party will likely be known before Mississippi gets to vote in their primaries.

Meet Bobby Blake, candidate for State Senate- District 20
2007-07-16 18:55:40
Note: Bobby Blake is running for the District 20 Senate seat that is being vacated by Charlie Ross. It econompasses Rankin and Madison counties. Mr. Blake faces Harvey Dallas, Charles Porter, and Lee Yancey in the August 7 Republican primary.
Why are you running?
I have witnessed for too long the lack of action to repair the obvious problems which plague our area and our state. Too many politicians are not willing to be Statesmen. Too many politicians are not willing to stand up for the public good. I have long felt there is too much divisiveness in our state government. When the District 20 senate seat became vacant I knew it was the best opportunity I would have to get elected and to serve the people of District 20 and Mississippi.
What are the key issues you see in District 20?
We need more quality jobs. Quality jobs and expanding payrolls are critical to a robust economy. Taxes can be kept low or even lowered with a robust economy. Our children and grandchildren need jobs which wi ...

Tort Reform Works
2007-07-16 17:57:09
Here is an excerpt from Directorship.
Mississippi’s composite ranking is low, but it is a state in transition. Once ranked among the five worst states for liability climate, the state now boasts common sense legal reforms, an emerging rule-of-law majority on its Supreme Court, and a stalwart liability reformer in Governor Haley Barbour. Attorney General Jim Hood, however, is an activist attorney general who sued several insurers in connection with Hurricane Katrina. While Mississippi’s insurance loss ratios are still among the worst in the nation, they should improve with the reforms enacted. Mississippi is clearly a state to watch because of Governor Barbour’s continuing efforts to make the state attractive for growth and jobs creation.
As it says, Mississippi has come a long way- but still has ways to go to truly be ?business friendly.? And it is not going to get there with Jim Hood serving as attorney general.

Franks the Conservative?
2007-07-16 07:40:48
Democratic lt. gov. hopeful Jamie Franks was at the Mississippi Horse Park in Starkville over the weekend doing some campaigning, and I just wanted to pass along some statements and quotes he made apparently in an attempt to court conservative voters, according the Commercial Dispatch.
When speaking about the Mississippi Right to Life endorsement of Charlie Ross, Franks said, ?I don?t think there?s a dime?s worth of difference between Charlie Ross, Phil Bryant, and Jamie Franks when it comes to social issues.?
The paper added:
Franks stated clearly his opposition to abortion, gay marriage, the state laws already in place which deny gay couples the option to adopt children, and his belief that ?In God We Trust? has a place on the schoolhouse wall.
?I didn’t get my values from the national Republican Party or the national Democratic Party, but from a little rural Church of God on Briar Creek Road in Mooreville, Mississippi,? said Franks, moving his platform visibly right of center ...

The Mississippi Democrat
2007-07-16 07:01:17
When I first saw Jere Nash post the George Dale ad from The Mississippi Democrat on his blog, followed by a post at CottonMouth featuring a picture of the ad; all I could think of was- the Democrats have a magazine?
I then went to the MS Democrats website and there it is for my reading and viewing pleasure. It was what you would expect from a political party?s newsletter- bashing the Republican governor who is going to win a rout come November and give the appearance of a unified Democratic party set on winning big in the general election.
I was hopping to see a column by Ike Brown, especially his letter to the Clarion-Ledger, about how ?progressive? Democrats will now lead the party. I guess Ike got snubbed.
But about the Dale ad, if he does in fact lose the primary, and then Mike Chaney goes on to win the general election he should run an ad saying, ?I told you so.? I have said it before and will say it again- if the Democrats want to give the boot to a long term incumbent in favor ...

More Fun Courtesy of Edwards
2007-07-14 21:23:15
The Hill had a story today about national Democrats differing on what defines rich, in terms of rolling back the tax cuts enacted during the Bush presidency and a funny line caught my eye. This line is courtesy of John Edwards, who will be in Mississippi on Monday to survey what poverty looks like.
(When asked about the tax cuts) Edwards ducked the question ?What is a rich person?? in a recent presidential debate. ?I don?t know if I know what a rich person is,? the multimillionaire replied.
I guess when you have other people comb your hair and put your makeup on; you don?t have to look in the mirror to see what a rich person looks like. My guess is that someone who lives in a 29,000 square foot house and gets a $400 haircut they should be considered rich.
Kudos to the Hill for getting Edwards on that line.
