Op-Ed from MFIRE
2007-07-21 08:22:03
I got an e-mail from the Mississippi Federation for Immigration Reform and Enforcement asking me to post this op-ed from their organization. You can check out their website here. I am not saying I necessarily agree with everything here, but wanted to give y’all a chance to read and post your comments while I am up at Neshoba for the day.

What now President Bush?
Polls place President Bush’s performance higher than Congress’ abysmal rating, but it is at an all-time low. In great measure this is because the public is disgusted with his illegal immigration stance and his failure to offer credible solutions. This taint could well hamstring the future political aspirations of genuine conservative Republicans.
What can the president do to salvage his legacy, revive confidence in government’s ability to solve problems, and regain the support of his base?
He must push for seamless border security and enforcement of existing immigr ...

Ross Attacks Bryant Over Casinos
2007-07-20 21:01:30
I got this link to the latest Ross attack ad from Y’all Politics. In an ad that is appearing on the Coast only, Ross criticizes Phil Bryant’s statement at a debate when he said he would have opposed offshore gambling, which Ross supported. Cotton Mouth talked about this last night in this post. Gambling is a sensitive issue, and in the GOP primary there will be voters with a wide range of opinions about it. Ross may have been intending for this to only be seen on the Coast (where voters are overwhelmingly Republican, but also support the casinos), but that is near impossible in today’s political blogging world (as of this posting this video has not been posted on Ross’s campaign website).

Anti-Hood Video
2007-07-20 18:01:33
I found this funny video on Magnolia Report and wanted everyone to see it. I am not real sure who made it, but puts comedy to a point that the Hopkins camp should continuously talk about when on the campaign trail. The vast majority of Jim Hood’s campaign funds come from lawyers, with a large bulk of that coming from out of state lawyers. Check it out.

Progress
2007-07-20 17:10:06
The title of a story in the Clarion-Ledger says it best: “State’s employment level sets record.” That is a result of the latest labor statistics pointing out that employment surprised a record mark previously established in early 2000.
Haley Barbour issued this statement as a result:

“Reaching this historic level is great news because it emphasizes the strength and growing diversity of our economy. It is a positive sign that we are moving in the right direction.”

Candidates In The News
2007-07-20 07:10:14
Charlie Ross wasn’t the only lt. gov. candidate to pick up an endorsement last night. Phil Bryant captured the endorsement of the Police Benevolent Association. This is the press release from his campaign website.
In the SofS race, Mike Lott recently appeared in the Commercial Appeal. He went over a number of issues including voter ID and education. He also offered up his thoughts on Delbert Hosemann’s proposed change in formula for funding on northern school districts.
In the race for AG, Al Hopkins landed an endorsement from the Mississippi Medical PAC. You can read the entire press release from his campaign website.

NRA Backs Ross
2007-07-19 17:12:55
Charlie Ross won his second big endorsement in the past week today with the NRA choosing to support the state senator. Here is the press release as it appears on Ross’ campaign website:
______________________________________________________
Conservative Senator Charlie Ross on Thursday received the endorsement of the National Rifle Association’s Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) in the August 7 Republican Primary for Lieutenant Governor.
“It is an honor to be endorsed by one of the most effective grassroots organizations in the country,” Charlie Ross said. “I am proud to have defended freedom my entire adult life-first as an Air Force pilot and then as a State Senator writing laws that defend our Second Amendment rights.
“As a gun owner, I don’t take our Second Amendment Rights for granted,” Ross added. “I have been proud to fight for this Constitutional right in the Senate.”
Ross was the primary author of the NRA-backed “Castle Doctrine” self-defense law. Th ...

Ross Responds
2007-07-19 12:19:09
I wonder if this is going to continue for the next three weeks. One candidate launches an attack, the other responds, followed by another attack, and another response and on and on and on. Well, it’s shaping up that way in the race for lt. Gov between Ross and Bryant.
Here is the Ross response to the Bryant attack from yesterday:
_______________________________________________________
“Instead of talking about his role in the Partnership, my opponent is now launching a misleading negative attack to divert attention from the issue. He claims that I am not an ally of Gov. Barbour because my law firm is suing the governor. The truth is, I do not represent anyone who is in litigation with the State - especially Gov. Barbour. A couple of attorneys in my law firm, which is one of the largest in the state, represent clients who are in litigation with the Department of Medicaid, and the governor is named as a defendant in his official capacity. The ad is very flimsy and very misleading. ...

Bryant Strikes Back
2007-07-18 21:03:19
As quick as Charlie Ross attacked Bryant, Bryant shot back with an ad of his own attacking Ross. How dirty will it get? Thanks, once again, to Cotton Mouth for the link.

Lott Right On
2007-07-18 18:27:04
The Democrats put on a stunt last night with their so-called all night session to try to gain support for a Senate measure to withdraw troops from Iraq. The Democrats failed to pick up the necessary 60 votes once again with both Thad Cochran and Trent Lott voting against it. I got to give Lott credit for this line about the Dems (from the Clarion-Ledger).
Last night’s spectacle was a Democrat propaganda extravaganza, conscripting senators as props, staffers as humiliating bit extras, and paid for by the American taxpayer, all to appease their liberal friends.

Dems Empty Allegations
2007-07-18 13:37:05
Two recent allegations by Democrats- one national and one statewide (but both named John)- need to be called out for lacking any substance.
The first came from John Edwards, during his poverty tour in the Delta town of Canton (as billed by his campaign staff). While not making any specifics, Edwards declared that he knew of worker’s who were not being paid minimum wage, not getting paid overtime, and working in poor conditions below safety requirements. If you are going to attack the name of a company (that has not actually been charged with doing anything wrong), do it because you have proof and are not trying to score political points.
And then this morning I read of allegations by John Arthur Eaves against Haley Barbour. He labeled the governor someone who “typifies and represents the culture of political corruption.” Eaves apparently based that comment of the rewarding of a post-Katrina contract to a company run by one of Haley’s nieces through marriage. That thin link is p ...
