Can’t Make This One Up
2007-09-07 09:05:04
When I read the headline to this story in today’s Clarion-Ledger, I didn’t believe I read it right until I saw the story and realized it was true. The headline, “Attorney to push slavery issue for leniency in slayings.”
Apparently Johnnie Walls- who is representing Carla Hughes, a former teacher accused of killing a woman and her unborn child- wants the indictment to be thrown out or the sentencing to be limited because “Hughes is a descendant of slaves and experienced overt and cruel discrimination in her state on the basis of race.”
Walls, who is also a State Senator from Greenville, also wants to get rid of that pesky rule saying that those who can not read can not serve on juries.
Where do they come up with this stuff?

Message From Les Riley
2007-09-07 06:41:19
Les Riley, Constitution Party candidate for Ag Commish, sent out this message and I wanted to spread it around. I will say this about Riley- I am impressed with how he is working to get his name out and let people know where he stands on the issues. I understand big media- TV ads, etc.- are still the most common and by most accounts the most effective way of advertising for a political campaign, but I like seeing a candidate get involved with the “grassroots” or “netroots.” Just in general, I think Democrats- and more specifically liberals- have the edge in using the Internet; but I hope to see all candidates use the Internet soon.

Wicker Officially Endorses Thompson
2007-09-06 16:36:53
I mentioned in my previous post that Wicker was supporting Fred Thompson, and he has since issued this press release declaring his support for the former Tennessee Senator:
REP. WICKER ANNOUNCES SUPPORT
FOR FRED THOMPSON’S PRESIDENTIAL BID
Notes former Tennessee senator’s consistent conservative principles
WASHINGTON, D.C.—U. S. Rep. Roger Wicker (R-MS) formally endorsed the presidential candidacy of Republican Fred Thompson Thursday.
The former Tennessee senator officially entered the 2008 presidential race on September 5th. Rep. Wicker noted that he and Thompson share the same strong conservative philosophy.
The Congressman said, “Fred Thompson brings an imposing, presidential presence to this campaign along with a consistent record on mainstream conservative principles that will resonate with the American people. He also knows Mississippi well. As a good neighbor from just across the border, he understands and shares our concerns about maintaining a strong national defen ...

Cochran to Endorse Fred Thompson
2007-09-06 12:39:32
The Hill is reporting that Sen. Thad Cochran will endorse former Senator and now official presidential candidate Fred Thompson. This announcement splits the endorsements for Congressional Republicans from Mississippi. Cochran and Roger Wicker have both endorsed Thompson, while Trent Lott and Chip Pickering have endorsed John McCain.

Weekly SEC picks (Week Two)
2007-09-06 08:22:08
Coming off of an 11 for 11 week, I am feeling pretty good heading into this weekend. There are a couple good conference games this week, and some interesting non-conference match-ups as well- so some of the picks won’t be as easy as last week.
Alabama at Vanderbilt- The first road and the first conference game of the Nick Saban era at Bama. I am not sold on the Crimson Tide, and would not be shocked if this were a close game but I will give the edge to Alabama.
Mississippi State at Tulane- I am a Rebel through and through, but watching State play last week was so painful you really felt bad for them (at least I did). This is an interesting game, but if State’s defense plays as it did in the first half against LSU and they get some sort of life on the offensive side of the ball, they could come home winners, and I’ll pick them in a close game.
South Florida at Auburn- Auburn got off to a bit of a slow start against Kansas State last week, but they should have no trouble with South ...

Stacey Pickering Speaks Out
2007-09-05 21:02:16
I’ve been waiting for Stacey Pickering to really start campaigning, and while I haven’t seen a lot yet we learned of some campaign themes in this interview from the Enterprise Journal in McComb. Here is the bulk of the interview:
Pickering, in an interview with the Enterprise-Journal last week, said he wants to lead the state auditor’s office because it “touches every level of government.” Pickering said he wants to improve the working relationship between the auditor’s office and state and local government agencies and make government “transparent and accountable.”
“I would like the auditor’s office to be a model of accountability and management in the state of Mississippi,” he said.
Pickering will face Democrat Mike Sumrall of Mount Olive in the Nov. 6 general election. The winner replaces Phil Bryant, who is not seeking re-election to the office he has held since 1996 and is running for lieutenant governor.
Sumrall has said he is the only candidate seeking the ...

Rudy and Haley?
2007-09-05 12:44:47
When Rudy Giuliani was in Pearl yesterday going over his disaster preparedness plan, Haley Barbour introduced the former NYC mayor and was present on the stage for the speech.
After the speech, the topic of a vice presidential candidate came up during a press conference. Haley quickly dismissed the question and said he was on “hurricane duty.” Haley also reiterated previous comments that it would not be wise to tap someone from Mississippi- but rather choose someone from a more competitive Midwestern state for example. With Haley, Rudy wouldn’t be thinking that he needs him to win his home state, but that he needs him for geographical and ideological balance.
Unfortunately, I do not think Haley will be chosen- in fact I am near certain he wouldn’t be tapped a veep even if he was not running for re-election. Not because he isn’t competent, but because Democrats and the press would have a field day with a conservative Republican from Mississippi. Every racial issue that the De ...

Enjoy Your Right to Work Free of Unions
2007-09-03 07:23:19
I was thinking of an appropriate Labor Day post and I thought the Mississippi Right to Work Law would make good sense.
Miss. Const. art. 7 § 198-A
Section 198-A. It is hereby declared to be the public policy of Mississippi that the right of a person or persons to work shall not be denied or abridged on account of membership or nonmembership in any labor union or labor organization. Any agreement or combination between any employer and any labor union or labor organization whereby any person not a member of such union or organization shall be denied the right to work for any employer, or whereby such membership is made a condition of employment or continuation of employment by such employer, or whereby any such union or organization acquires an employment monopoly in any enterprise, is hereby declared to be an illegal combination or conspiracy and against public policy. No person shall be required by an employer to become or remain a member of any labor union or labor organization as a ...

More for Labor Day
2007-09-03 07:22:56
And one more thing to pass along this Labor Day, it comes from the president of the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation.
National Worker Advocate’s Labor Day Statement: “Union Officials Owe Workers an Apology”
Leading union watchdog groups oppose Big Labor power grabs in Congress and defend thousands of union-abused employees in the Courts
Springfield, VA (August 31, 2007) – Mark Mix, President of the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation and National Right to Work Committee, made the following statement regarding this year’s Labor Day holiday.
The Foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides free legal aid to victims of compulsory unionism abuse. The National Right to Work Committee is 2.2 million member grassroots citizens’ organization that is dedicated to the principle that no one should ever be forced to affiliate with a union in order to get or keep a job.

House Republicans Vow To Oust McCoy
2007-09-01 18:09:11
I know I’m a couple days late on this story, but I finally found the press release I was looking for. It is from the House Republicans promising to help elect a new speaker. As I have mentioned earlier, conservative Democrat Jeff Smith has entered the race; but the Republicans do not mention anyone specific in the release. Sid Salter has also covered this and some of the voting blocs on his blog.
From Leesha Faulkner at the Daily Journal:
JACKSON, MISS. - The Mississippi House Republican Conference unanimously agreed Thursday that GOP members will vote together as a group to elect a new Speaker of the House other than incumbent Rep. Billy McCoy (D-Rienzi) for a new four-year term of office beginning in January, 2008. “We’re going to have a new Speaker next January, and it’s not going to be Billy McCoy,” said Assistant Republican Leader Greg Snowden (R-Meridian). “In our opinion, he cannot be re-elected Speaker without Republican votes, and it is clear he will have n ...
