Pay To Play In Jim Hood’s Office
2007-09-24 17:36:16
From the Al Hopkins campaign: Hood Launches False and Negative Attack on Al Hopkins’ Military Experience Hood’s Ludicrous Attack is Smokescreen to Hide the Fact He’s Given State Contracts to Law Firms Who’ve Given Him Over $400,000 in Campaign Contributions JACKSON, MS - This morning Attorney General Jim Hood launched a false and negative attack on retired Major General Al Hopkins’ military experience in an effort to hide the way he appears to have sold state contingency fee contracts to his campaign contributors. In a press forum sponsored by the Stennis Institute, Hopkins documented the ways Hood repeatedly received campaign contributions in close proximity to state contracts he awarded to the contributors’ firms. “Jim Hood’s false and negative attack on my military service is a ludicrous smokescreen by a man who is desperate to hide the way he appears to be selling state contracts to his political contributors,” stated Hopkins. “S ...

Barbour Shreds Eaves In Debate
2007-09-21 07:43:46
Audio from the debate- click here. The Clarion-Ledger has a summary of last night’s debate, but for better coverage check out the open thread at Y’all Politics. And for the best line of the night, thanks to Haley Barbour: Now if you leave here thinking you don’t know what he (Eaves) would do as governor, I understand, cause he doesn’t know either. ...
Hold Your Representative Accountable For Their Speaker Vote
2007-09-20 21:02:18
Rep. Joe Warren, one of Billy McCoy’s cheerleaders in the House, wrote this commentary on the status of the Speaker’s race and why he thinks McCoy shouldn’t even have a competitor. I just wanted to take a minute to break down some of what the representative said and didn’t say. I suggest that all candidates for the House of Representatives concentrate on their own race, not the Speaker’s. This shows that he doesn’t want the races to be about Billy McCoy because he knows he is out of the Mississippi mainstream. The Speaker’s post is one of the three most powerful in state government and he can kill any legislation, yet only has to face one out of 122 districts, less than 1 percent of the state’s population. Since I, here in Rankin county, cannot vote against McCoy, I can indirectly vote against him by choosing not support anyone who would support McCoy. The vote for Speaker is the most important one any legislator will make; I think I ought to know and care about who the ...
Weekly SEC Picks (Week Four)
2007-09-20 08:14:58
We’ll try to do a little better this week than last week’s 4-4. A couple pretty good SEC match ups this week, and then a few yawners as well. Georgia at Alabama- I got burned by picking the road team in Tuscaloosa last week, and I am not real convinced on how good of a team Georgia is. I was skeptical of Alabama at first, but they have been impressive so far and I will take Alabama this week. New Mexico State at Auburn- Surely Auburn isn’t going to lose three in a row at home to an unranked, lesser opponent, right? I just don’t see Auburn losing to a Sun-Belt team and will take the Tigers. Kentucky at Arkansas- Both these teams messed me up last week. Kentucky is coming off of a high from beating in-state rival Louisville thanks to a comeback while Arkansas saw their comeback wiped away by a late touchdown drive from Alabama. I still think Arkansas the better team and will take the Hogs. South Carolina at LSU- LSU is playing as good as anybody in the county. If this game was in ...
New Poll Question
2007-09-19 21:15:17
Thanks for those who voted in my last poll, and I thought up a new question for this week: What effect will Les Riley have on the Commissioner of Agriculture race? The options are he will help Lester Spell (R) and hurt Rickey Cole (D), help Cole and hurt Spell, Riley will win, or he will make no difference. Have fun voting. ...

Vote No Yalobusha County
2007-09-19 17:52:53
Yalobusha County voters will get a chance to vote on legalizing beer and light wine sales in December as part of the local county option law in Mississippi. Under the law, a vote to legalize alcohol sales must be put on the ballot if a petition containing valid signatures of at least 20 percent of the county’s registered voters. As I talked about in a previous post when this issue came up in Tishomingo County earlier in the summer, voters would be wise to vote no and keep Yalobusha County dry. The up tick in taxes the county may receive from legalized sales is not enough, in my opinion, to justify the potentially deadly disease of alcoholism. ...
Eaves Wanted Cheat Sheet For Debate
2007-09-19 12:39:33
It’s interesting to read over the rules for debates and see who wanted this, who didn’t want that, etc. and the one thing that caught my eye from the upcoming gubernatorial debate rules was this request by the Eaves camp. A campaign insider said Eaves initially wanted to crib from prepared notes during the debate. Barbour’s camp said no way. “We thought that it would be best if both candidates were able to answer the questions without having the answers previously prepared,” said Brian Perry, a Barbour spokesman. “No one running for governor should have to have campaign ‘Cliff’s Notes’ at the podium.” I agree, bottom line is if you want to be a governor you have to know the issues inside-and-out. We’ll see if Eaves is up for that task on Thursday. ...
John Eaves, What Are Your Thoughts On Tort Reform?
2007-09-18 18:26:01
That’s a bit of a rhetorical question as most know how the trial lawyer turned gubernatorial hopeful feels about the subject. You may remember he flirted with the idea of mounting a primary challenge against Ronnie Musgrove in 2003 after he signed a tort-reform bill. And in this election season, he has not spoken on the subject, nor does he include his thoughts on it anywhere on his website. Well, I suggest the Eaves camp- as they are trying to run a ‘Populist’ campaign- take a look at the numbers below and see what good tort reform has done for Mississippi. PHYSICIANS SAY 2004 TORT REFORMS LOWERED 2008 INSURANCE RATES The president of the state’s largest physician association said recent cuts in medical liability insurance costs are a direct result of tort reforms passed by the Mississippi State Legislature in 2004. Mississippi State Medical Association President Dwalia S. South, MD said the largest insurer of doctors in the state has cut costs five times since the 2004 tort ...
