More From Franks’ Blog
2007-10-04 17:32:50
Yesterday, I wrote about this blog titled “Jamie Franks for Lt. Governor Official Blog” that was, well, incomplete. I later looked to Franks’ campaign website, and they had their own blog there as well. (Not) to my surprise; this is what I found: The same lack of ideas on the Blogspot blog is featured on his official website’s blog. ...

History Of The Term “Moneychangers”
2007-10-04 10:31:09
From Rev. Phillip Knight of the Wesleyan Center for Strategic Studies: The commercial paid for by the committee to elect John Eaves as Governor of Mississippi is, at the least, inconsiderate and, at the most, insightful. The commercial uses the phrase “Moneychangers.” I assume since the candidate is speaking in the spot that he approved the final edition that is playing across the state. The term moneychangers was used as a derogatory term to describe the Jewish traders in an encounter Jesus had with those who had taken up occupancy inside the temple courtyard. You may remember your Sunday school lesson that Jesus was extremely perturbed at these Jewish businessmen and ran them out forcibly by using what was a essentially a whip. The problem with the use of the term really surfaces when you realize that this was a major term used in Adolf Hitler’s pre-invasion speeches throughout Germany. In his speeches, he often referred to the Jews living in Europe and precisely Germany as ...

Vermont and the League of the South: Teaming Up To Secede
2007-10-04 06:32:55
Secession is always fun to talk about, isn’t it? Here is an AP story about a Chattanooga, Tennessee meeting between the League of the South and the Middlebury Institute. On the agenda- secession. The L.O.T.S. is a conservative organization that has been labeled a white supremacist organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center (as they do every conservative organization) and the Middlebury Institute is focusing on the liberal state of Vermont, who hopes to secede because of their dislike of war and conservative courts. The two are unlikely partners- but are working for one goal. From the Associated Press: CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - In an unlikely marriage of desire to secede from the United States, two advocacy groups from opposite political traditions — New England and the South — are sitting down to talk. Tired of foreign wars and what they consider right-wing courts, the Middlebury Institute wants liberal states like Vermont to be able to secede peacefully. That sounds just fine to ...
Weekly SEC Picks (Week Six)
2007-10-04 06:13:44
6-2 last week, I’ll try do a little better this week. Kentucky at South Carolina- Who would have seriously thought either of these two teams would have been in the top 11 when the schedules were made? I don’t either of these teams will be standing this strong in the polls after the year is over, but I’ve been wrong before. Either way, I’m going with Kentucky on the road. Their QB is outstanding, I’ve picked against them before and its cost me, and I simply think they are the better of the two teams. Houston at Alabama- Alabama burned me last week, but I think they should be alright this week. I’ll take them over Houston. Chattanooga at Arkansas- A week after playing North Texas, Arkansas now has Chattanooga to mess with. I’ll go with Arkansas. Vanderbilt at Auburn- Auburn loses to Mississippi State at home and then beats Florida on the road, does this make any sense to you? Assuming they will keep the momentum from last week, Auburn should win. Florida at ...

Eaves Claims Support From Hunting Group, But They Never Endorsed Him
2007-10-03 17:39:33
In a recent press release, the Eaves campaign claimed to have been endorsed by the Mississippi Dog Hunters Association in an attempt to try to distract attention from Barbour’s NRA endorsement. Here is part of the press release: Sportsmen’s Groups Supporting Eaves Miss. Hunting Dog Association (contact Chad Toney at 601-xxx-xxxx), the Miss. Black Sportsmen (Michael Smith at 601-xxx-xxxx), and the Raccoon Hunters Association (Don Morgan at 601-xxx-xxxx). The first group listed, MHDA, does not endorse candidates however (as you can read below). It is my understanding that the Eaves camp has since acknowledged that and removed them from their endorsements list. From Mark Morrison, president of MHDA: It has come to my attention, as current president of MHDA, that we have allegedly endorsed one or more candidates for political office here in Mississippi with regard to the upcoming elections. Please be advised that the MHDA, as a non-profit, non-political organization has not, and indeed ...
More on Eaves Suing the Military
2007-10-03 17:24:33
From the Barbour campaign: FACT: John Arthur Eaves, Jr. opened an office on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques to field plaintiffs for his $100+ million lawsuit against the United States Navy. - Reference, Associated Press, 6/16/2000 FACT: Eaves’ lawsuit endangered our troops by condemning one of the few “ideal” military training facilities worldwide where soldiers could prepare a “trifecta of military maneuvers” by being able to practice simultaneous procedures for air, land, and water combat. -Reference, Associated Press, 6/15/2001 FACT: Of the lawsuit he waged against our military, Eaves said, “I think $100 million may turn out to be at the lower end of what we might get from the navy.” - Reference, Sunday Herald, 2/4/2001 FACT: Eaves, siding with foreigners, led a lawsuit against a United States Marine Corp pilot in 1999. In this litigation, Eaves sought the conviction of an American military captain, along with a sentence of 206 years in ...
NRA Endorses Al Hopkins
2007-10-03 09:21:34
From the Al Hopkins campaign: NRA Political Victory Fund Endorses Al Hopkins Calls Hopkins “Right Choice for Attorney General” JACKSON, MS - The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) today announced its endorsement of Major General (R) Al Hopkins in the race for Mississippi’s next Attorney General. “Al Hopkins is the right choice for Attorney General in Mississippi,” NRA-PVF Chairman Chris Cox stated. “He is a Life Member of the National Rifle Association, and because of his strong support of the Second Amendment, he has earned an ‘A’ rating from NRA-PVF.” “As an avid outdoorsman, I’m thrilled to be backed by the Mississippians of the NRA who share my commitment to protecting our Second Amendment rights,” stated Hopkins. “They are one of the most influential organizations in our state, because Mississippians want an Attorney General who shares their values and upholds the integrity of the office, especially when no one’ ...
Bennie Thompson on Homosexuality
2007-10-02 19:57:57
Not sure why this was in The Hill today, but they asked a number of representatives this following question: Is homosexuality a choice or something you’re born with? Bennie Thompson, the only member of the Mississippi delegation interviewed, said the following: “It’s a choice. Without benefit of any science to the contrary, you know?” ...
Hopkins’ Ad- Exposing Jim Hood
2007-10-02 16:35:03
From the Al Hopkins campaign: New Ad Documents Hood As ‘Toast of The Town’ To His Political Contributors Hopkins’ Ad Exposes the Fact Hood’s Given State Contracts to Lawyers and Law Firms Who’ve Given Him Over $400,000 in Campaign Cash JACKSON, MS - Today, retired Major General Al Hopkins unveiled a new campaign ad that illustrates the type of conversation Jim Hood’s campaign contributors are having behind closed doors. The ad documents the over $400,000 in campaign contributions Hood has taken from lawyers and law firms to whom he’s given state contracts since taking office. “The way Jim Hood is giving state contracts to his political contributors might not be illegal, but it’s wrong,” stated Hopkins. “Sadly, Mr. Hood’s pattern of unethical behavior, that’s highlighted by the MCI Worldcom deal which he gave to his largest contributor, has created an unhealthy perception among Mississippians that the Attorney General’s ...
Haley’s Latest Ad- What’s Wrong With John Arthur Eaves?
2007-10-02 13:34:46
Hattip: Right of Mississippi This ad is similar to this part of the press release sent out by the Barbour camp last night: EAVES: Recklessly Suing the Military In the spirit of the NRA endorsement, let’s remember the Second Amendment to the Constitution: “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” What does John Arthur Eaves Jr. think about “the security of a free State”? Eaves sued the United States Navy to prevent training exercises vital to the safety of our troops. Eaves flew to Europe to chase plaintiffs so he could sue the United States Marine Corps. Eaves is not just willing to sue the United States armed forces, he is anxious to do so - ambulance chasing across the ocean to do it. You’ll hear more about the disappointing and dishonoring lawsuits of John Arthur Eaves soon. ...
Mike Lott Endorses Hosemann
2007-10-02 12:15:29
Mike Lott, who lost to Delbert Hosemann in the Republican primary for Secretary of State this past August, sent out this letter supporting Hosemann: I would like to thank the many people who helped me in the recent campaign for Secretary of State. From the phone calls I have received since the election, it is clear that we truly “turned some heads” politically and earned the respect of thousands. To all my opponents I say, “Thank you for running a clean race.” As candidates, I believe the best strategy is one of integrity and character; I think it was clear to voters that the Republican candidates for Secretary of State truly respected each other and stood on our own qualifications. The day after the election, I contacted Delbert Hosemann and pledged my support to his candidacy for the November general election. I did so with confidence that he and I are on the “same page” concerning the key issues. The person who becomes Mississippi’s next Secretary of State will have th ...
Mississippi Right-to-Life General Election Endorsements
2007-10-02 07:09:29
They gave out some endorsements and recommendations before the primary, but here is a list of their official endorsements for the general elections. For statewide offices, they endorsed: Haley Barbour for Governor, Phil Bryant for Lieutenant Governor, Al Hopkins for Attorney General, and Delbert Hosemann for Secretary of State. From the Mississippi Right-to-Life: Mississippi Voters Blessed this Election Year The voters of Mississippi are truly blessed this election year since so many candidates seeking elected office are dedicated and committed pro-lifers. In word and deed the overwhelming majority of candidates seeking elected office in our state hold a pro-life position on infanticide, abortion and euthanasia. All of the candidates seeking the offices of Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State and Attorney General have stated publicly that they are pro-life. In making our endorsements, the voting members of the PAC gave careful consideration to the following criteria: past voting ...
Facts Can Be Inconvenient, Can’t They Jamie?
2007-10-01 20:40:59
Pro-Beef Plant legislator Jamie Franks can try to spin the issue and accuse Phil Bryant of being responsible for the failed project, but Franks ought to look in the mirror first. From the Phil Bryant campaign: Jamie Franks may like to run away from his own voting record, but now might be a good time for him to double-check it. As unbelievable as it might sound, Jamie Franks is so desperate, he’s now trying to blame Phil Bryant for the Beef Plant debacle-the same Beef Plant that Jamie Franks voted to give millions of taxpayers money to. The reality is, Jamie Franks voted to fund the Beef Plant on three separate occasions. It’s a wonder Jamie Franks would even want to utter the words “Beef Plant” in this campaign considering he voted to fund it three times. Jamie Franks voted over and over to fund the Beef Plant-Phil Bryant did not. Here’s the record: - Senate Bill 2002 in the 2000 2nd legislative special session-(Advantage Jobs Act) created the Land, Water ...
