Watching A Campaign Implode
2007-10-18 12:41:29
Last night, I took issue with John Eaves obnoxious statement about why Espy and Bishop endorsed Barbour.
At the time, Eaves should have simply ignored it and moved on and it would be out of the news the next day. Or he could have issued a statement along these lines: “Well, I’m disappointed they are supporting the governor, I believe his policies have hurt the state, and my ideas will bring Mississippi forward. That said, there’s three weeks left in the campaign and I will be out meeting as many voters, shaking as many hands as possible, and letting people know what I’m about.” He says that, the issue is over. Instead he calls them corrupt, and the issue stays in the news. Who exactly is advising Eaves?
It didn’t just end with Eaves, but the Democratic Chairman Wayne Dowdy chimed in by saying that the endorsements show “that John Eaves has the momentum.” Is he kidding me? Losing the support of a former Congressman who comes from a family strongly tied to the Mississippi ...

John Arthur Eaves Ridiculous Response
2007-10-17 18:00:51
I don’t usually call politicians (in this case a wannabe politician) names like idiot or stupid often, but I can’t help myself after reading John Eaves response to a number of prominent Dems endorsing Haley Barbour today. (For the record, I am saying his statement was stupid- not necessarily Eaves.)
Here is what he said in an e-mail to the Clarion-Ledger:
“What have Barbour and his moneychanger friends promised them?” Eaves said in an e-mailed statement. “The time for special deals for friends and family is over. It’s a question of who do you serve, and I’ll serve my Creator by serving the people of Mississippi, and no one else.”
The second part of that statement is usual rhetoric that has been featured in every line that has come out of Eaves mouth, but the first sentence is appalling.
I would like John Eaves to take a trip to the Delta, stand up and declare that Mike Espy is corrupt. I would like him to call Bill Clinton who appointed Espy Secretary of Agriculture an ...

Text of Xavier Bishop’s Endorsement of Haley Barbour
2007-10-17 17:30:58
Good morning. I would like to begin by first stating that I’m not here today as a Democrat, I’m here as a statesman, and nor am I here as an African American, but I am here as a Mississippian. And finally I am not here today as a public leader, I’m here as a public servant. My time in office thus far has pretty much been defined by Hurricane Katrina. You see I took office two months before the hurricane hit. Now, Governor Barbour formed the commission to rebuild the Gulf Coast and for me that was the perfect example of managing through a crisis. He reached across the political isle to ask Mr. Barksdale to head the commission. And the expertise that was brought to the coast, the architects, the designers, the planners enables us to start to vision what we wanted the Gulf Coast to become. Next, the Governor went about the task of procuring funds to help make that vision a reality. The Gulf Coast continues to be in transition, we are focused on the future because of the leadership o ...

Text of Brad Dye’s Endorsement of Haley Barbour
2007-10-17 17:30:14
Four years ago I supported Haley for Governor. I had high expectations for him and I have not been disappointed. He has given this state tremendous leadership in some difficult times. I have been very impressed on how he has handled his self with the Mississippi legislature. As you’ve seen, he gets his way and that’s the way it should be he’s the Governor of the state. I am here to endorse him again and I look forward to four more progressive years of strong conservative leadership from Haley Barbour. He and Marsha give our state the type of leadership and the type of exposure that is so good for our people. Haley, best of luck and I know you’re gonna win for all of these people supporting you. Marsha, y’all have a good campaign.

Text of Mike Espy’s Endorsement of Haley Barbour
2007-10-17 17:29:07
Good Morning. I’m Mike Espy and you may know that I am a Democrat. But I’ve got to tell you. In the past, I confess to you that I have a preference for voting for candidates of that persuasion, but today I’m announcing that I’m going a different way. I’m doing it for a very, very good reason. We’ve got to do what’s best for Mississippi and in this case it has to be the person over the party. So I’m stepping outside of the strictures of partisan boundaries and I am telling you that I really do intend to vote for Haley Barbour to succeed himself as our next Governor of the great state of Mississippi. I’m doing it, I think for all the right reasons. First of all he called me. He called me and asked me for my support personally and you may overlook that, you might laugh at that, but it’s very important in the state as diverse as ours to know that the Governor knows he has to reach out to bring support over to his side. If I might say particularly to those of us who ...

Text of Bill Waller’s Endorsement of Haley Barbour
2007-10-17 17:28:31
Governor, Mrs. Barbour, ladies and gentleman. I’m happy to be here today to endorse the best governor that we have ever had. And I want to say to you sincerely this morning that I have watched this administration move our state forward. We have created for ourselves for the first time in one hundred years a good state image, a reputation that’s well known nationally and internationally. Our state’s on the move. We are in overdrive. We are moving faster than we ever have and I am urging all of my friends and fellow Mississippians to get behind Haley Barbour for Governor and let’s give him four more years.

Who Did Jamie Franks Watch The 2004 Presidential Election With?
2007-10-17 12:40:25
MS GOP press release:
While Jamie Franks says in a television ad that he doesn’t get his values from the National Democrat Party, his close connections to liberal National Democrats directly dispute that claim:
On the night of the Presidential Election of November 2, 2004, according to the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal newspaper, was Jamie Franks soaking up his values in Mooreville, Mississippi? No. Instead, Jamie Franks was at the Kerry-Edwards Campaign National Headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was calling in glowing reports to the newspaper with election returns:
“Rep. Jamie Franks, D-Mooreville, was at the Kerry-Edwards Campaign National Headquarters in Boston. At 10 p.m., he said the mood was very upbeat. “We feel pretty good about things,” Franks said in a telephone conversation. “We just won Pennsylvania and we think when the West Coast comes in we’ll be in even better shape. Then it’ll come down to Florida and Ohio, and we’ll need ...

Tate Reeves Ad
2007-10-17 12:29:26
If there is anyone who doesn’t need to spend a dime this election season it is Tate Reeves, but he has decided to release this campaign ad. Just a nice, positive ad, highlighting some of the accomplishments of his first term.
It’s funny how some liberals claimed racism when Reeves beat Gary Anderson for treasurer in 2003. The voters obviously made the right choice judging by Reeves’ first term. Maybe they are smart after all.

A Conservative Response
2007-10-16 20:43:56
There are a few national conservative blogs, such as RedState or Drudge Report, that do a good job of providing everything from national news to information on the local level. But, it is clear that liberals (or progressives as they seem to call themselves in the blogosphere) are better organized, particularly when it comes to Senate, Congressional, and Gubernatorial races.
ActBlue has helped to raise tons of money in small increments for Democratic candidates, while Republicans seemed to be sitting still. I am glad to see that Slatecard has been established to more easily raise money for GOP candidates.
Another advantage Dems had was in what I consider a national clearing-house of state blogs. From LeftyBlogs.com, you can click on any state and see the latest updates from various blogs for that particular state. Conservatives have responded with RightyBlogs.com, which is powered by RedState. Similarly, you can click on any state and see frequently updated blogs from whichever state yo ...

Taggart’s Updated Predictions- A Republican Sweep?
2007-10-16 17:39:21
Conservative Clarion-Ledger blogger Andy Taggart issued an updated campaign scorecard on how he thought the statewide raced looked. Here is what he said:
Today we are three weeks out from Election Day. I have updated my scorecard as follows:
Sure things for Republicans — Governor, Treasurer, Secretary of State and Auditor
Clear favorite for Republicans — Lieutenant Governor and Insurance Commissioner
Leaning Republican — Ag Commissioner
Toss up — Attorney General
I am not 100 percent certain I agree with him from what I sense, but he has many more resources than I. The two races that caught my eye are the Ag Commisioner and Attorney General. I would have thought they were more like Toss-up and Leans Democrat, respectively.
I did ask him what he based his predictions on; and hopefully we can get more of a sense of where he is coming from.
