MoveOn Petraeus Ad a Failure
2007-09-21 12:05:54
MoveOn.org is claiming that their Betray Us ad was a success. Being someone who listens to both liberal and conservative media I have to disagree. MoveOn's claim was that the ad got people talking about the content, but overall I would say there was more discussion about the headline. Though there was some discussion about the content in the liberal media there was virtually none in the conservative media. This actually gave the conservative media an opportunity to avoid talking about the misleading facts in the testimony of General Petraeus and allowed them to strengthen the hatred and division between political parties that serves both the liberal and conservative media so well. I would have liked hearing more discussion about how this administration is calculating statistics on violence. It has been reported that this administration only counts certain types of violence in their statistics. Have they always done this or is it something new? Not once did I ...
Dealing With the Economic Anxiety
2007-09-07 07:05:43
In an interview on National Public Radio there was discussion about research that shows there is economic anxiety in the middle class. In this interview it is said that although the economy is doing well, many Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. They went on to talk about how we are living beyond our means and we should cut back on spending. I agree with this to a point, but what would happen if every struggling American decided to follow this advice? If millions of people decided to spend less wouldn't this hurt the economy? The reduction in sales would force businesses to cut jobs; this couldn't possibly help the economy that is supposedly doing well. I certainly agree that we Americans struggle to live within our means, but cutting back on spending will do little to solve the problem of economic anxiety in the middle class.         Along with spending cuts we should ...
Solving Immigration
2007-09-05 19:04:14
This is another issue that falls under problem solving vs. problem management. For quite some time our government has merely managed the immigration problem, and they haven't done it very well. It seems when the problem is discussed we only talk about securing our border with Mexico. Will this really solve the problem? We could put up a fifty foot wall along the entire border and I'd be willing to bet it won't solve the problem. It may slow things down, but new ways will be created to get into our country. This would actually create more opportunity for those who smuggle people across the border, raising prices and profits. If the price is right someone will be willing to look the other way. What about the rest of our borders and our coasts, are we going to build a wall around our entire country? Even if we fully secure the border with Mexico, problems will develop elsewhere.       &nb ...
