The Ron Paul Revolution
2007-11-29 18:00:00
As I look at all the Presidential candidates, very few are representative of the change that we keep talking about. Most of the candidates appear to be just the same old thing, classic politicians. We have been electing this type of person for far too long. Ron Paul, who gets little attention from the media, doesn't seem to fit this mold. After visiting his website and reading where he stands on the issues, I now see why he is drawing attention from the voters. His commitment to staying true to our Constitution is unparalleled. I don't believe any of the other candidates have made reference to letting the Constitution be our guide. Ron Paul seems to have one consistent message, he doesn't appear to be using tactics designed to pull emotional strings such as bringing up Hillary Clinton. I don't agree with all his viewpoints, but that can be said for any candidate.I am concerned about his ability to lead and unite this country, but I have the same concern about all t ...

The "C" Word
2007-11-28 18:00:00
It is such a beautiful word, yet it receives very little use today. It is a word that should be used frequently, especially in today's society. It is essential for all types of relationships whether they be personal, business, or political. For some people it has almost become a dirty word. Yes, I'm talking about compromise. This is one of the main ingredients that is missing from our society. Everybody is so busy wanting their way that they seem to consider compromise a defeat. It is the lack of compromise that keeps our nation from moving forward; without it we remain in gridlock and very little gets accomplished. If we are to get America moving in the right direction, compromise is a must. There is always going to be disagreement, it seems that both the right and left believe the other side is going to miraculously adopt their beliefs. This is not going to happen. The only solution is compromise. Our country's founders disagreed about many things, yet they were able to come ...

Supporting the Candidates
2007-11-27 18:02:11
Barbara Streisand recently announced her support for Hillary Clinton. I respect her decision if she truly believes Hillary is the best person for the job, but what does all that "we are in a momentous time" and "a woman's potential has no limitations" stuff have to do with it? I think her support would have been better served without referring to gender. It would be great to see our first female President, but not if she isn't the best person for the job. To throw this stuff in makes it sound like we should vote for Hillary just so we can break this so called glass ceiling. Oprah is going on the campaign trail for Barack Obama, I hope she doesn't expect people to vote for him just so we can have our first black President. Again, it would be great to see our first black President, but not if he isn't the best person for the job. This is nothing more than an attempt to pull emotional strings. This election must be different. We must vote for the candidate best able to unite our ...

The Danger of Dependency
2007-11-26 17:50:29
Have we come to expect too much of government? We expect it to fix every little problem or thing we are unhappy about. As I watch the 2008 campaigns there are many people asking the candidates what they would do to fix things, but nobody asks what we the people are willing to do. Are we willing to make sacrifice? Are we willing to give our time? This country doesn't belong to our elected representatives, it belongs to we the people. There certainly are things that government should resolve, but there also things that we could handle. It is perfectly clear that our government has more than it can handle and it is time for us to do our part. I believe in small government, but how can we expect to have small government when we expect it to resolve a big list of issues and problems. There is only so much that government can do; expecting too much has resulted in what we see today. We complain about paying too much in taxes, but every time we ask government to do more we are asking i ...

Got Oil?
2007-11-26 03:22:25
Our dependence on foreign oil has left us in quite a predicament. We have basically given oil producing nations a new weapon. It could even be said that it is a weapon of mass destruction. If the cost of oil were to double or triple, our country would face serious consequences. It could get even worse if our supply were to be cut off or drastically reduced. Here are some comments just to remind us that the threat is real.If the United States does the crazy thing of invading Iran or attacking Venezuela again. The barrel of oil is not just going to reach $100, it can make it to $200. - Hugo Chavez, VenezuelaWe would never want to use oil as a weapon or take any illegal actions but if America takes any action against us, we would know how to reply. - Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, IranWith the added threat of terrorists affecting the oil supply, it is about time that we eliminate this dependence. Whether it's through obtaining our own oil supply or using newer technology ...

The Culture of Corruption
2007-11-22 18:17:01
I think it is fair to say that corruption is at epidemic proportions. From the very top all the way down to the bottom we see those who are willing to do what they know to be wrong for personal gain. Whether it's a high level government official taking a bribe, a middle class person who cheats on their taxes, or someone at the bottom collecting government aid to which they are not entitled, many people are taking. Even within those who are supposed to stop and prevent corruption, we see it. Behind the corruption are those who witness it but do nothing about it. We have become a society of everybody is doing it so why shouldn't I. I can't help but wonder where this will all lead. Will we reach a point where every single person is corrupt? If everybody keeps taking we will eventually reach a point where there is nothing left to take. What kind of America will this leave our children? Our next President must be able to overcome the problem of corruption. He or she ...

Hungry Americans
2007-11-21 18:07:35
As we sit down for our Thanksgiving feast this year, how many of us will be thinking about the over 35 million Americans who have to deal with hunger? That is about one out of every ten Americans. Sadly, many of them are children. This problem is nothing new to our country; it has probably existed since our country began. You would think over the course of two-hundred years we would be able solve the hunger problem in America. It would certainly be great if we could, because then we would probably know how to solve world hunger.Like most, if not all of our problems we handle it with problem management instead of actually solving the problem. Food banks, free lunches, and food stamps are nice, but they are only a temporary fix. If we keep feeding people without ever putting them in a position to acquire their own food, the problem will never get solved. We must create a society with abundant opportunity that allows everyone to earn enough money to be able to afford ...

The 2nd Amendment
2007-11-21 03:36:34
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. The Supreme Court has decided they will look at a case involving the ban of handguns, which means they will review the meaning of the second amendment. There has been dispute about the intentions of the second amendment. Some say it meant to provide individual protection for the right to bear arms and others believe it protects the right relating to military service. I believe it applies to the right of each citizen to bear arms. Why would you have to say a well regulated militia has the right to bear arms? I would think it would be understood that any type of military is going to have weapons. It seems to me this whole amendment was to ensure that each individual state would be in a position to defend itself against a federal government gone bad. How easy would it be for an administration to subdue the citizens if it had an armed m ...

Gun Control
2007-11-19 18:10:49
There can be no denying that our country has serious problems with gun violence. The number of shootings continue to rise in many cities; even our law enforcement personnel are being shot in record numbers. It seems that whenever solving this problem is discussed, gun control is the preferred solution. Will gun control actually solve the problem, or are we just talking about more problem management? We can make the legal route for obtaining guns as difficult as we want and it might reduce the gun violence, but it's not going to solve the problem. Those who illegally obtain and distribute guns would probably benefit by more restriction. Gun control could certainly reduce the supply, but this wouldn't change the demand. With lower supply and still high demand, the profits for illegal gun trafficking would skyrocket. If just lowering statistics is the objective, then gun control is the best solution. But, if we want to actually get serious about ending gun violence then ...

50 Trillion Dollars in Future Financial Obligations
2007-11-18 18:34:32
We already have a large debt of borrowed money, add to that our future financial obligations of money that is promised and we're looking at 50 trillion dollars. There is a group of traveling economists that are trying to raise awareness of this problem. We can't even get our national debt to decrease, how can we possibly raise the revenue to meet these future financial obligations? The general consensus among these economists is that Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are the biggest part of the problem. This means our children and grandchildren will be left a tremendous burden; they will have to pay unimaginable taxes to help meet the obligations or will be left to care for those who have no benefits. We really have limited options here, its either cut the programs or raise the needed revenue. Of course, there is also the possibility that we the people could come together and fix the problem now, which will most likely mean sacrifice and inconvenience ...

A Sad State of National Defense
2007-11-15 17:46:25
Here is some info about which every American should be concerned. This story, titled Demands on Army Exceed Supply, is most troublesome. We are living in a dangerous world where it is imperative that we have a national defense that is ready for anything. It appears that our army has been weakened to a point where we are ready for very little. President Bush always talks about keeping our country safe. It seems to me that having a strong national defense would be a part of this. Here is some of the disturbing information from the story. The Army chief now says that if the United States were to take part in another conflict, he probably wouldn't have the troops to carry out the mission. The current demand for our forces exceeds the sustainable supply. We're consumed with meeting the demands of the current fight and are unable to provide ready forces as rapidly as necessary for other contingencies. And the Army, stretched to the breaking point, can't maintain a strate ...

National Debt: 41 Days, Another 100 Billion
2007-11-14 18:06:35
The rate at which the national debt grows is absolutely horrifying. In just 41 days another 100 billion dollars has been added. I am still baffled by the lack of concern over this problem. Most people that I know don't seem to care, the media doesn't seem to care, and the politicians definitely don't care as they are the ones running up the debt. We are heading for our fifth straight year of adding more than 500 billion dollars to the national debt. The Republican led congress started the trend and it looks like the Democratic led congress will continue it. They have already added over 430 billion for the year. With over 45 days left in the year, another 70 billion should be no problem. Here is the history of the 9 trillion dollar debt.
August 31 - Crosses the 9 trillion mark for one day but dips below the next day.
September 5 - Crosses the 9 trillion mark again.
September 11 - For a short period the debt is 9 trillion, 11 billion (9.11 on 9/11???)
September 20 - Dips b ...

A Perspective On Poverty
2007-11-13 17:47:22
Several times this year I have heard people try to put a positive spin on poverty. Hearing things such as "it's good to struggle" or "people in poverty today have it better than those in it elsewhere" makes it sounds like poverty is acceptable. We should be able to overcome this problem with all the knowledge, technology, and wealth we have today. Poverty is a drain on our public treasure and a driving force behind crime. If we could somehow find a way to eliminate it, the benefits to our country would be great. Those who try to put a positive spin on poverty are doing nothing to help move America forward and may even be holding us back. This week, on National Public Radio, I heard a gentleman comment that those living in poverty have it better than those living in it years ago. This is absolutely stupid, the middle and upper class also have it better than their respective classes from years ago. Are we supposed to feel better about poverty because of thi ...

U.S. Government to Ban Sugar
2007-11-12 18:12:14
In an effort to ensure the health of the American people, the government is placing a ban on sugar. It will no longer be allowed to be used in any food products. A government spokesman said, we are facing a serious obesity problem in this country and we believe eliminating sugar will help reduce the problem. Besides obesity, sugar may be contributing to diabetes, especially in children. With all the sugar substitutes on the market it is a good time to stop using sugar. Although this will take some getting used to, the American people will realize it is for their own good. The U.S. government is not planning to ban sugar, at least not yet. How would you feel if they were to ban sugar? Right now the trend is to ban fats, but once the government trims all the fat and obesity is still a problem, sugar may be next. If that doesn't do the trick, maybe the government can ration our food. This trend of bans is counter-productive to delivering what should be the true message, responsible ...

Rethinking America's Privacy
2007-11-11 18:08:06
Donald Kerr, the principal deputy director of national intelligence, says that it is time for Americans to rethink our definition of Privacy. He states that privacy should no longer mean anonymity, but that government and businesses should properly safeguard people's private communications and financial information. I don't believe this is what he is really saying, but lets deal with it first. I thought these things were already supposed to be safeguarded. Isn't that why we continually receive privacy statements from just about everybody? Besides, we have seen several cases this year where businesses and government have failed to safeguard our information. The deputy director's statement is ridiculous. Privacy shouldn't mean safeguarding our information; safeguarding our information should mean safeguarding our information.I think what Mr. Kerr is really saying is that we should allow government to collect our information as they see fit. In other words, ...
