Located on Nguyen Thien Thuat Street in Ho Chi Minh City is a bevy of guitar shops.Guitarists throughout the south converge on this street to play and purchase locally made and internationally known guitars.On a 500 meter stretch of Nguyen Thien Thuat there are over 20 guitar shops which have been operating there for three decades, selling and making instruments.One of the oldest shops is Duy Ngoc, named after the owner, who set up the store in the 1980s.Duy Ngoc says, “This street has been a hub for guitars since reunification 1975.From the 1990s up to now, many more stores like Phuc Loi and Duc Thang have emerged.”Depending on the quality, the guitars range from ten US dollars to a thousand.The average guitar price is about US$300-400.According to Ngoc, the best sounding guitars are made from imported pine.He says that besides selling to local artists, many of the guitar makers export their higher quality instruments to markets in the US, England and France, among others.Ngoc’s ...

The new international airport terminal at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City officially opened Tuesday after three years of construction.The grand opening ceremony was held at the new US$219 million terminal, which was built with aid from Japan’s Special Yen Credit Loan by KTOM joint venture (Kajima-Taisei-Obayashi-Madea) and Japan Airport Consultants.With a capacity of 10 million passengers per annum it covers an area of 92,920 square meters with three floors and one mezzanine.In his address to the ceremony, Southern Airports Authority director general Nguyen Nguyen Hung said the airport authority was aware of the importance and difficulties of running the terminal as it had been trialing since August, and handled more than 27,000 flights with two million passengers.He said the authority was installed with specialized systems like access control, information and building management, baggage X-ray machines, escalators and moving sidewalks.The Japan Bank for Intern ...

Vinh Nghiem Pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City is one of the largest pagodas in Vietnam.It covers an area of 6,000 square meters and was constructed between 1964 and 1971 under the design guidelines of Vietnamese architect, Nguyen Ba Lang.Two Vietnamese monks, Thich Tam Giac and Thich Thanh Kiem, originally conceptualized the idea of building a large Buddhist center in Southern Vietnam.They had come to Saigon, present-day HCMC, from the north in 1964 to spread Buddhism and visualized a temple of worship that could be made from long-lasting concrete instead of traditional wood.The monks modified a version of wooden Vinh Nghiem Pagoda in Bac Giang Province which was built during the Ly Dynasty (1010-1225).The newly-built pagoda thus became the first in Southern Vietnam to have similar architecture of the old Vinh Nghiem Pagoda, but with concrete as its main building material.The pagoda has since become a popular place of worship for Buddhists, especially on the first and fifteenth of the lunar m ...
