An Image of God
2007-07-27 18:55:00
We are said to be bornin the image of God,a God who walkedwith Adam, with Evein the Garden.A God who came to earth, spoke from the,out of the, burning bush;who was in the silencethat the prophet heard.God came to earthas the son, the carpenter’s son,Mary’s son, her first born,to walk with us, to die for us.God is with us still, in theSpirit left behind, in thesureness of the answers to prayer, prayers of the faithful. With us too in the covenants, the promises of the Father,of the Son, to be with us,to come againand bring us home.July 25, 2007 7:26amAssignment for that day in the Upper Room magazine ...

An Aborted Strike
2007-07-27 18:41:00
The hawk swooped downfalling talons first, down from the sky, out of the blueacross my field of vision, down the highwayair brakes engaged; but there was no strike,no small creature on the ground, in the talons. The raptor carved the sky, retracted its legsand arched back into the blue, flappingits broad wings, lit in the late afternoon sunback into the heavens above.July 27, 2007 19:41 ...

Adverse Effect
2007-07-27 18:29:00
A pent-up question, crushed his swagger, confidence, bravado, the friendly banter,in the cool of reflection, for a moment, a telling moment, because she asked the questionnone of us can answer, when a decision of the law,an interpretation, a position takencan have catastrophic effect, permanent, unalterable, death. She asked if suicide and deathwould qualify as an adverse effect,of the education they offered her?Would that have been enough,to tip the scales of their argument? He paused and so did we, waiting, for an answer that couldn’t come. For the arguments of the advocates, the parsing of the words, of the law,the parts of the regulations, are far removed from the stark realitythat she faced. Far removed fromthe fear she felt, heard in the askingof the question to him.It was a teachable moment;thank you for the lesson.July 27, 2007 19:29 ...

Run the Race
2007-07-23 15:51:00
If only we would just run forward, mile on mile, not look backward, behind us, second guessing, looking for the packthe enemy, the assurance of the approvalof society, peers, neighbors, friendsIf we could only look to the Savior, follow the Spirit, live the scripturesWe must run the race that has been set before usand focus on our reward at the finish lineFinished July 23, 2007 16:51Started March 4, 2007Philippians 3:12-4:1Sermon “A Race Everyone Can Win”by Rev. Answers to Prayer
2007-07-22 15:43:00
Three parts to the story,in the telling of the way of prayerthe words to raise, persistence in the face of trial, and the harvest, the bounty, the answers to prayerSo much meaning in theparts of the scripture,in the lesson of the Savior, the worth in the intoning the words, the communing of our spirits, the bending of our kneesbefore the creator. He will answer our prayersin ways momentous and sublime, glorious and unfathomable. We who are base, evil, would give muchfor neighbors in need, how much more our loving father,in answers to prayer.July 22, 2007 16:42Luke 11:1-13 ...

Ripened Summer Fruit
2007-07-22 15:31:00
Oh how fitting, a lectionary storycaught in the summer months, hot and harsh for ripe summer fruitripening even after picking, turning quickly to overripe fruitSo were the people, too quick to turnfrom the people of God, set apart,to the ways of the earth, to usingothers, to greed, corruption,to spoil in the sunrather than spreading the light. We are luckier than these, because we have seen the true harvestthe bounty for us. Let us bethe ripened summer fruitreaped for the good worksto share our bounty, our message of loveJuly 22, 2007 16:30Amos 8:4-12Jeremiah 31:31Ezekiel 10United Methodist Hymnal, #643, “When Love is Found”Inspired by the sermon, “Until Hope Comes”,by the Reverend Peter A. The Fall of the Kingdom
2007-07-22 15:14:00
We see the end, the exile, the fall of the Kingdom,in the judgment of God,meted out in the wordsof the prophet, the starkharsh words, casting outthe people from the land; They had become liketheir oppressors long ago. They were to be sent towander yet again,in spiritual dispersionto again lose their anchor, their homeland,to wanderuntil the hope comesJuly 22, 2007 16:11Amos 8:4-12Inspired by the sermon, “Until Hope Comes”,by the Reverend Peter A. Praying is Believing
2007-07-22 15:10:00
Seeing is believing,so the telling goes, of one bit of truthfor some of the people, most of the timeat the very least.Others share a different take, a different meansof telling the story, of life’s challenges, of faithBelieving is seeing,to step out in faith, to do the work of a person of faithis to believe in the unseen.A further step on that roadcould be summed up,Praying is believing, because it is a turning inward,a turning over of the problems, the joys, the questions of lifeto the unseen deity. Not merely doingwhat we perceive as holy;but turning our lives overto the unknown, the invisibleJuly 22, 2007 16:09Luke 11:1-13 ...

Hope Came
2007-07-22 14:49:00
Hope came, in the birth of the Sonto bring hope to the people, waiting for so longfor the stem, the root, to bring forth hopethe lost redeemed through the long nightending, by the new covenant, the fulfillmentof the ancient prophesy, the new covenantmade real in the person, the flesh, the birthingof the savior; to finish the lament, thedark judgment of Amos, the wheel of Ezekiel, the doubt of Eli, the offering of Samuel, the hopeful vision of JeremiahAll bound up in the one man. Running
2007-07-22 14:42:00
She was running this morningearly Sunday morningwhile we drove by on the way to churchblack top, black shorts, once white running shoestoned features, purposeful face, black bands on her bicepshair bouncing in the breezeIt seemed she was arguingwith herself, the way her headjerked from side to side, her face grimacedwith the footfalls down the hill, off the bridge, like she was debatingand losing the pointpropelled on, downwardby gravity, by the flow of the sidewalk,as she was running this morningWhatever joy led her to the work, catching the beauty of the morning, freedom from other cares, they were lost, in the puffing, the contorting, the hurtlingdown the hill by the riverRunning was the only thing, the only thing left.July 22, 2007 15:42 ...

Harold
2007-07-22 14:28:00
If it wasn’t for the denthe would be making in their budgethis antics would be all the more funwhimsical, worthy of story and song.A cagey, crafty, oh so inventive, very human, small, red squirrelwas eating ALL of their bird foodin the front window feeder,as fast as they filled it. No, really, she filled it in the morning, he in the afternoonhe the next morning. By noon, gone againas we returned from lunch outhe finished his dining. Droppings sharedenjoyed by the pair of chipmunks, living under the front porch. No competition with thegray squirrels out in the backyardHarold was king of the front feeder, hanging upside down, claws duginto the front screen, a real acrobat(with a very soft looking belly of white fuzz). He was the reason for the dearth of foodfor other customers; but I suppose he wasn’tconcerned for others, at that moment. He was enthralled, enraptured by the factTHEY KEPT REFILLING THE FEEDER!No need to be shy, when the humansare so fabulously cooperative.Let the others find ...
