Soap in my Mouth
2007-08-15 14:58:36
While driving to the beach, the conversation turned from dog breeds to the meaning behind certain “cuss” words after my husband explained the term “bitch” to my captivated daughters.
Daddy?
Yes.
Does Jack have a father?
Yes.
Then why is Mommy always calling him a bastard? ...

Hell
2007-08-10 16:30:10
The fam and I are headed out for a long weekend at the beach. We’re going to visit my almost 90 year old cranky Nana who is probably already pacing by the window waiting for our arrival. (It takes 4 hours to get there.) She doesn’t believe in sassy children, internet access, eating anything that isn’t pre-frozen and thinks air conditioning is a luxury. In addition to all of that glory awaiting me, I have to drive over a very huge and extremely long bridge to get there…and back. Who is in control when your having a panic attack? Not me.
Pray for me or come rescue. I’ll be in need of both.
Until Thursday…Kimberly out. ...

Too Susie to be Still
2007-08-09 06:00:53
Yesterday my girlfriend requested some moral support as she sat down for her first tattoo. While our kids lounged in the waiting room, bodies and minds being corrupted by Burger King and nekkid lady sketches resembling grotesque mud flaps, my pal got her butterfly for life.
This friend of mine, SusieQ, is a writer. She’s one of those women you see that’s blessed with boundless energy, has her hands in a million and one projects, is always cheerful, always smiling and never EVER sitting still.
Here you see Miss Suz about to jump out of her ever lovin’ skin just waiting to have the image drawn on to her shoulder for final approval. Can you feel her twitching?
Side note for those of you that were told, like me, that turning your blog into a book is a pipe dream: A couple of years ago, Susie wrote her first book and later began putting excerpts from it on her blog. An agent discovered said blog and within the year a little publisher called Penguin (heard of them?) pick ...

Harvest for the Challenged
2007-08-08 11:16:39
Holy Tomato! What a bounty I’ve collected from my garden this month.
Now I’ve got all these ripe tomatoes and no clue how to maximize my efforts.
Any ideas for the harvestly challenged? ...

Just a Day in the Life
2007-08-07 23:00:34
After class today, my girlfriend requested my moral support as she sat down for her first tattoo. While our kids lounged in the waiting room eating Burger King and perusing nekkid lady sketches that reminded me of tractor trailer mud flaps, my pal got her butterfly for life.
More on that, with pictures, tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the girly-girls and I had a fabUloso day. Borders, haircuts, Mexican food and even a bit of nail art as I tried to give my 12 year old a french manicure. She was pleased even though it turned out reeeeeeaaaaaly crappy.
She said, “Mom, you could be a nail person.(long pause) Not that you’d want to do that. (longer pause) It would be disgusting touching all of those nasty feet”.
Smart girl.
I’m off to bed. ...

Short -n- Sweet
2007-08-06 08:33:29
My 8 year old daughter and I sharing gooey brownie sundae after dinner yesterday:
Me: Ummmmmmmmm, this is so good….ummmmmmmm
8: Yeah (trying to get all of the brownie pieces before I do)
Me: You know, there’s something really girly about sharing a yummy sundae like this together.
8: Mom, okay, now you’re starting to freak me out.
So much for mother/daughter bonding over chocolate.
Your turn: Tell me something short and sweet about your weekend. ...

Simply MultiTasking
2007-08-04 10:22:28
In this day and age, us parents are expected to juggle a multitude of duties at once. Carpooling on a conference call, breastfeeding while blogging, clipping coupons as we grocery shop, addressing baby shower invitations at soccer practice…we’ve all been there.
But when should we be concerned?
Recently I have become aware of some safety neglect on my part when it comes to multitasking. Take the bathroom for instance. I have learned the hard way that one should never EVER do anything else (like pick up a bathroom towel from the floor and clean the shower glass) while a Q-tip is inside of the ear. Very bad and painful things can happen.
Why just this morning I was reading my OK! mag in the loo and soon found myself organizing my make up tray, clipping my toenails and emptying the trash can…all mid-business! Yes, I’m worried too.
Society has burned it into our brain that we can, we need, we must do more than one thing at a time. There shall not be a singular f ...

Beauty and the BlogHer
2007-08-02 12:56:40
No one is the beast here. It’s called “self-branding”.
Why has it taken me so damn long to post a recap from events which began a week ago? Don’t ask me. All I can tell you is that I’m still processing. The 2007 BlogHer Conference birthed quite a bit of information coupled with the meeting, shaking hands and asses of over 800 women (Yes, I got them all - we speed dated).
The W itself was puzzle in which we set forth daily to conquer. Put your key in. Now, take it out. Nope, put it back in. Okay, take it out real quick. Now hurry! Push the button for your floor. No, you missed it again. You suck! Between the techo music piped into the elevators and the lack of any kind of bathroom privacy (bamboo shutters & a sliding door on a fanless bathroom in a tiny room does not a happy intestine make) Turn up the TV real loud and plug your nose. Please? Oh, just hold it, dammit. It’s only 4 days!
And don’t worry, if they bring you up a beautiful w ...

A Perfect Post - July’07
2007-08-01 06:00:08
Welcome to the July 2007 Perfect Post Awards!
My Co-Hostess, Lindsay, and I would like to welcome you to year # 2 of the Perfect Post Awards - “the power to the blogger awards” because you make it all happen.
In February of 2006, we popped the champagne and rolled out the red carpet for you to pat one another on the backside. Here we are today still lavishing in the good feeling of such a supportive community. Our mission statement has been simple and we like it that way. The Perfect Post Awards are a chance to read some of the best stuff written each month- and to spread a little warm fuzziness, too. If you’d like to present an award next month, e-mail me and I’ll send you the latest award button code a few days before the 1st. If you’re interested in looking through our past award posts, they can be found here. Thanks to each and every one of you for making the Perfect Post Awards such a great success!!
And now without further adieu, my Perfect Post Award ...

Safe But Older
2007-07-30 12:36:35
A big BlogHer update is in the works but right now I’m dealing with unpacking, laundry and a house that has been MAN-handled for 4 days. I just wanted to update so you’d know that I did survive the birthday travel. Yep, I’m not dead…however after a crazy-ass weekend and the flight-that-shall-not-take-off followed by lost luggage on the tail end, I’m sure feeling half dead. Maybe that’s just a 34 kind of groove thang. Dunno.
More BlogHer pictures here.
If you went to BlogHer, tell me this: How was your trip home?
Got your Perfect Post Awards in yet? It’s tomorrow!! ...

A BlogHer Birthday
2007-07-26 03:00:54
Just a quick note to say goodbye for a few days. Will I post at BlogHer? Hell yes!!!
I arrive back to VA on Sunday night - which happens to be my birthday. If you know me, you know I hate to travel on my birthday because I have an insane fear of dying on the same day that I was born. Those headstones are the saddest. (Yes, I know it’s crazy to think that way.) So, keep your fingers crossed that I make it home in one piece or that at the very least, I’m on life support until the following day.
I’m so excited about this trip. My roomie, Lindsay, and I are going to paint the town polka dotted!!
Windy City, here I come! ...

AKA - Kimberly Lohan Reid
2007-07-24 13:01:18
I had a close call with Hollywood stardom last Saturday night. At least, that’s the positive spin I’m putting on it. The glass is half full - the bra is half empty…same thing really.

Summer Saturday evenings in Petroville are often spent at Twilight Polo. We pack up the coolers, load all of the foldable furniture, dress in our Julia Roberts finest to head to the county’s grassy green where we frolic among friends. Being that we all share our creations, there’s always more food than you can eat and (hopefully) more spirits than you can imbibe between the long row of tailgaters. Do things occasionally get out of hand? Maybe but I’d venture that the pun “out of dress” is more appropriate in this case.
After two polo matches, a DJ sets up and people dance in the outdoor pavilion. It’s a great time for all ages and provides that the evening ends with a bang. This particular night, my sister and I w ...

Full Disclosure
2007-07-23 06:00:25
First, let me apologize for making such a fuss. I was trying to photoshop my wrinkles (and any visible fat) away before I revealed myself to the blogosphere. The result is a tad grainy but fairly true to form on a good day.
So here I am, in the flesh. MommaK, no more.
And Kimberly is the name - my real name.
Nice to meet you, finally.
Do me a favor. If you see this smiling face at BlogHer - please stop and say hello. I’m new at this “out of the closet” thing and I’ve never been to Chicago. I may be lost or tipsy or both. In either case, I’d love to meet you.
So…am I what you expected?
What about you? Do you post pictures of yourself on your blog?
Care to come out of the closet with me?

Today my baby girl turns 8 large. I really can’t believe it myself.
Sometimes when I look at you (esp. when you’re asleep), I can still see this little angel face with the chubby cheeks.
It has been an eventful year for you. You started 2nd grade at a new school where you didn’t know a soul. You made friends fast, though. You are such a social butterfly and yet loyal to a fault like your mother. You began dancing this year as well. First it was hip hop and now you are taking a summer tap class and really loving it.
Your biggest focus this year was horseback riding. Everything, everything, everything had to do with horses. Your clothes, your books, your lunchbox…we even had 2 of them painted on your bedroom wall! Right now you are halfway through your first show season and continue to make yourself and your family proud with your progress.
At the last show, you walked away the champion in both the Lead Line Equitation and the Lead Line Pleasure class. Lots- ...
