On the 1st Day of Ramadan… 2007-09-13 07:55:51 I found it particularly interesting this morning when I got into work to suddenly see girls who I didn’t even know were Muslims suddenly pitched up in Big Scarves and flaunting their Muslim identity. Sadly, this happens every year… these people (whom my friend calls “Fly by Night” and “Flash in the Pan” Muslims) always scuttle to the surface during the Holy month (as they should), but what I hope doesn’t happen (again, as it does every year) is that this “Proudly Muslim”-ness disappears at the end of the month and sometimes even during! Also, we see the brothers showing up for Zohar Salaah (Mid-day Prayer), which is equally good and the masjid was so full I couldn’t even get parking! Unfortunately again, the numbers dwindle as we get into it. *sigh* Right now I should do some soul-searching myself… I am one of those who shirk my responsibility when it comes to prayer. I need two goats… 2007-09-06 09:08:50 KATHMANDU - Officials at Nepal’s state-run airline have sacrificed two goats to appease Akash Bhairab, the Hindu sky god, following technical problems with one of its Boeing 757 aircraft, the carrier said Tuesday. The goats were sacrificed in front of the troublesome aircraft Sunday at Nepal’s only international airport in Kathmandu in accordance with Hindu traditions, an official said. It is common in Nepal to sacrifice animals like goats and buffaloes to appease different Hindu deities. Well that’s a novel way to solve problems… I wonder what they’ll do when Petrol runs out. “Make Laugh Not War” and the Conservative Muslim Backlash 2007-09-02 04:16:43 I went to watch the Muslim comedy show “Make Laugh Not War” last night and I never ever laughed so much since I went for YFM’s “Blacks Only” Comedy show in 2005. I swear I laughed so much it actually hurt, really. Riadd Moosa (pictured) was the MC and every time he was on stage everybody couldn’t keep from laughing, he picked on everything South African and Muslim and ripped it apart so beautifully every Muslim couldn’t help but laugh at themselves and I’m sure the same effect was made on the non-Muslims. Still screaming about Piracy? 2007-08-31 09:36:55 With the MPAA constantly screaming about how piracy is killing the movie industry, putting poor stagehands and grips out of work, you’d be hard pressed to see the problem when you hear that the box office take this summer passed $4 billion for the first time ever. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that movies are a social experience. People like going out to the movies if the experience is fun and good. If there are good movies, people will go out and see them, even if they’re available as a free download online. Just imagine what would happen if the movie industry stopped freaking out, stopped treating everyone as if they were a criminal and (gasp!) actually made the movie-going experience more enjoyable? Apart from this being yet another way some celebrity or even corporation wants to make more money off sucking the life out of popular culture (or is it feeding it?)… Anyway… here’s the review… Boy, I hope that Courtney Love is making a lot of money off this one. The Kurt Cobain action figure immortalizes the poster boy of grunge rock in 18 inches of dyed plastic (was the dyed part distasteful?) Sorry. Apparently the figure is electronic, but we’re not exactly sure if that alludes to potential karate chop action or maybe a sung verse of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Not intentionally, alas: a story topping Digg from an anonymous one-hit-wonder-blog called FacebookSecrets (an increasingly common tactic for spreading data around) shows that a part of Facebook’s source code was exposed to some users this weekend. The blog reposted all the code, which must surely have ruined Zuckerberg’s weekend. A server misconfiguration, not a hack, is being blamed. Facebook has since confirmed the issue. Now we just need the ConnectU code to be exposed and we can close that case. This does, however, raise serious questions about how secure Facebook may be. A code leak is a major, major problem for the site - the only thing that would generate more fear would be a hack that gained access to user data. The breach, says UK-based The Register, saw private information being accessible to all users. This included other users’ message inboxes. Founder of local legal firm Jacobson Attorneys Paul Jacobson noted in a post on the company’s Web site that he had received several instant messages from friends asking whether his Facebook inbox was still intact. “It then transpired that people had been logging into their Facebook accounts only to find someone else’s messages in their Facebook inbox.
