LIPITOR: THE POISON THAT CAUSES CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE
2008-03-01 18:56:04
PART 2 IN A THREE-PART POST  I stopped by the friendly, neighborhood Borders bookstore this morning in order to enjoy a cup of coffee and to count books. I was specifically interested in the books that were written by medical doctors and that had as their primary subject matter the prevention and/or reversal of heart disease. This particular Borders store had forty-nine different books that met the criteria. After counting the books, I then went to the index of each book, located the pages associated with the use of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs such as Lipitor, and then I read what each of those physician-written books had to say about the use of those drugs. It was a highly enjoyable way to Read more... ...
CLEAN WATER: IT'S NOT JUST FOR BEER ANYMORE
2008-02-27 17:08:37
PRODUCT REVIEW: DUPONT'S MODEL WF-FM350 FAUCET MOUNT WATER FILTER Back in 1988 while I was living in St. Louis, a Shell Oil pipeline broke near Vienna, Missouri and spilled 20,554 barrels of crude oil into the Gasconade River.  That crude oil flowed from Vienna to Gasconade, Missouri where it dumped into the Missouri River.  Once the crude oil reached the Missouri River, there was no chance of preventing it from mixing with the Mississippi River a short time later.  For the geographically challenged, I will mention here that the Missouri River empties into the Mississippi River north of St. Louis, Missouri.  So a few days after the spill took place in Vienna, the 863,268 gallons of crude oil reached St. Louis.  Read more... ...
THE MARKETING AND DANGERS OF PFIZER'S LIPITOR; A THREE PART SERIES
2008-02-23 00:49:12
UPDATE:  ON FEBRUARY 25TH, PFIZER ANNOUNCED THAT THEY HAVE CANCELLED THEIR LIPITOR AD CAMPAIGN FEATURING ROBERT JARVIK.  WHILE WE APPRECIATE THEIR PROMPT RESPONSE TO OUR EXPOSE', WE WILL BE INTERESTED TO SEE WHETHER PFIZER WILL ATTEMPT FURTHER DECEPTION IN THE FUTURE LIPITOR AD CAMPAIGN ON WHICH THEY ARE ALREADY WORKING.   PART ONE:  ROBERT JARVIK, PFIZER'S PIMP WITH A PUMP [youtube:http://youtube.com/watch?v=7SY2YDwUMP8 185 161]  Varjik had spent several weeks evaluating the neighborhood prior to renting this small office. There was a time when this particular neighborhood would have been called “blue-collar” or “working-class.” Now people tended to refer to the neighborhood as “old” and “worn out.” Bob knew that he had found the right place when he saw the marquee Read more... ...
NOTE TO MICHELLE OBAMA: THE FUNNY SMELL IN THE ROOM COMES FROM YOU
2008-02-18 18:16:46
[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1J54St7ZYY 185 161] It was twenty years ago, but since it happened during the birth of my son, I remember it as though it were yesterday. “What is that smell?” asked my wife. “It smells like someone pooped.” I looked at the nurse and she returned a dubious look which seemed to indicate that she wanted me to explain the source of the smell. I decided to ignore the question and the nurse's look. I was twenty-seven years old, and nothing in my limited experience had given me the skill set to deal with this awkward situation. I remember thinking that surely somewhere in nursing school the nurse must have learned how to deal with patients with involuntary defecations. Read more... ...
MEGAFOOD'S E & SELENIUM
2008-02-13 01:31:18
One of the trace minerals deficient in the modern Western diet is selenium, so I supplement my daily diet with a selenium tablet. I am always searching for products that might provide supplements in a more efficient manner, that is, will provide those supplements in a manner that closely resembles food. And so, based on the information that I could glean from the product label, I purchased the Megafood Dailyfoods E & Selenium product. I was a little hesitant about the purchase, because the product label was confusing, but I was on convinced by sale price of 30% off. Read more... ...
BOOK REVIEW: GRISHAM'S "THE APPEAL", AKA, "THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY ...
2008-02-11 14:49:27
The Appeal The Appeal, Copyright 2008 by John Grisham. Published by Doubleday. The International Herald Tribune recently published an article with the headline “ John Grisham, Out With His 21st Book, Sees Himself as Entertainer and not Literary Giant.” We can certainly all agree that Mr. Grisham is not a literary giant, but his latest book seems to indicate that he is a little confused about the definition of “entertainer.” He seems to think that the definition of “entertainer” is something along the lines of “fiction writer who gratuitously and invasively inserts political opinions throughout his work of fiction.” Mr. Grisham's latest work is about as entertaining as a poke in Read more... ...
TAXPAYER ALERT: ILLEGAL ALIENS WILL NOT RECEIVE TAX REBATES
2008-02-08 17:55:07
We had posted a concern that illegal immigrants might receive a tax rebate from the Economic Stimulus Package that has been signed into law.  The IRS will begin mailing these rebate checks in May, and we had voiced a concern that illegal aliens who filed their income tax returns using an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) might receive a rebate check.  We now have a clarification on the IRS web site which reads as follows:  "To be eligible for a stimulus payment, taxpayers must have valid Social Security numbers. Anyone who does not have a valid Social Security number, including those who file using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN) or any other identification number issued by the IRS is not eligible for this payment."  So we are happy to post that the rebate checks should only go to legal workers.  If you care to see Read more... ...
H&R BLOCK: EVEN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS NEED A TAX REFUND NOW AND THEN
2008-02-08 15:23:31
Last year I took a temporary job with H&R Block doing tax preparation. I was there just to assist them in getting through their busiest season, the few weeks surrounding that time when the majority of people receive their W-2s in the mail. Normally, people are required to spend several weeks attending H&R Block's tax preparation classes prior to working for them, but they were severely understaffed in this area of the country. I have a fairly strong accounting background and have experience in doing not only individual tax preparation but also corporate tax preparation, so I was able to work for them after attending just a day-long condensed version of their classes. The most important qualification on my resume' was my ability to speak Spanish. H&R Block Read more... ...
WATER: THE CURE FOR HEARTBURN
2008-02-06 22:46:53
I enjoy eating spicy foods. I like curry, hot mustard, Tabasco sauce, habañero sauce, and wasabi. I am fond of eating fresh, whole, jalapeño peppers, much as one might eat an apple. It is seldom that a day goes by in which I do not consume at least one spicy food. Yet my medicine cabinet is surprisingly void of Zantac, Prilosec, Pepcid, Tums, Rolaids, Maalox, etc. I must admit to having one small, unopened, year-old bottle of Mylanta in the refrigerator as an emergency back-up in case my heartburn should return. In spite of my addiction to spicy foods, I live a heartburn and acid-indigestion free life. There was a time in my life when I purchased Tums EX and Rolaids in the bulk packs or family-sized bottles. WHAT DOES AN "AVERAGE JOE" WANT?
2008-02-05 01:59:59
I stopped into my favorite Thai restaurant today to pick up some curry fried rice to take home and eat while watching the Super Bowl. I did not call ahead, and so I needed to wait in the restaurant for fifteen minutes while the food was being prepared. I ordered a Samuel Adams beer and sat down for the wait. While waiting I observed and experienced a few things that, in sequential order, disappointed me, comforted me, entertained me, and then irritated me. I was motivated to share my experience, because it occurred to me that any average joe would feel the same gamut of emotions given similar circumstances. With the first sip of my Samuel Adams beer, I knew that something was terribly wrong. Now I must Read more... ...
BOOK REVIEW: AN ODE TO THE SELF-DELUDED
2008-02-02 00:16:26
Stirring It Up Stirring it Up: How to Make Money and Save the World. Written by Gary Hirshberg. Published by Hyperion, 2008.  This morning, as I contemplated what I would write today, the Weather Channel advised me that our overnight low temperature was two degrees Fahrenheit and that we would see twelve inches of snow this evening. Naturally, I was put in mind of global warming, and decided to write about a book on the subject that I recently read. Read more... ...
ILLEGAL MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS: PURVEYORS OF ITALIAN BEEF
2008-01-30 11:20:02
I am tired of the illegal immigration debate. I am tired of hearing promises of border fences that never materialize. I am tired of hearing assurances of hiring thousands of additional border patrol agents who never seem to take on human flesh. I am tired of hearing stories of illegal aliens who, rather than being taken into custody when caught here in the United States, are requested to report for their deportation appointment, and who, of course, fail to report or instead claim sanctuary in a church to avoid deportation. More than anything, I am tired of waiting on the federal government to do something to fix the massive problem that we have with the millions of illegals residing in this country. Since I have no confidence that our government will act any time soon, I have decided to begin acting on behalf of my paralyzed government. While I have no power Read more... ...
CALCULATED RISKS AND HARD WORK
2008-01-29 01:17:51
I was not prepared for the request when it came, but I did not hesitate a moment in granting it, as it came from my nine year old son. I was busy cleaning my perpetually dirty workshop on a cold Sunday in December, but I immediately realized the superiority of my son's plan for occupying our time that afternoon, for his plan involved hiking in the East Tennessee mountains. When faced with a choice between cleaning a workshop and hiking, I will opt for the hiking every time. We were in the middle of a short but fairly severe cold snap, so the hike would not be without it's negative parts, but nothing so negative as the drudgery of cleaning. I should note that the cold snap was fairly severe by East Tennessee standards, but would probably be considered fairly mild by the Read more... ...
