Theme Post #2 - Good Covers (Pt.1)
2007-09-06 07:35:00
I love covers. A good cover for me is one that manages to claim the song for the new artist or adds something to the original. A bad cover is one which raises the question 'For the love of all that is holy, why???' or ruins a classic. This week I am posting the first batch of what I consider are good covers. Next week I am planning to post some OMG/WTF-were-they-thinking? covers. Of course, my taste may differ to yours... :) I'll mix in some other themes but expect to see more batches of covers over the next couple of months. In this first batch I have:Original: Bobby Darin - If I Were A CarpenterCovered by: The Four Tops, Johnny and June CashTracknotes: I adore this track and all it's versions. It's been covered by lots of artists but if someone mentions the song I think of the Johnny Cash version because it adds a dash of humour to the mix. If you have any other versions of this song, I'd love a link to check it out.Original: The Who - Behind Blue EyesCovered by: Limp BizkitTra ...

Thank you!
2007-09-05 00:13:00
Just a quick note to say that to have over 1000 downloads in the first week of posts, the enthusiastic comments you've added both here and on the LJ syndicated feed and the emails you've sent have really made me grin from ear to ear. Thanks to all those that have signed up to the updates whether by LJ, RSS or email or even just simply bookmarked the address to come back to. Huge thanks if you mentioned the site to others or sent the link onwards. ::friendly and appreciative tickles to you all::I'd like to say thanks to Ed over at 17 Seconds for swinging by, adding a cute, positive comment and then adding a link to Wolf Lullaby on his links list. Oh and thanks to Jobacle's Andrew G.R. for commenting on the article about his podcast. You guys are way neat.Right, before I descend into mush, I thought you might be curious to know which tracks out of the 75 posted have been the most popular so here are the top five downloaded up till now:Jools Holland Ft. Monday Mix #2 - 03/09/07
2007-09-02 18:34:00
Each Monday I'll be sharing (a lucky) 13 tracks that don't share a theme, they're just worth sharing. Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :) This week I have for you - Track: Candie Payne - All I Need To HearTracknotes: I was delighted to see Candie mentioned in The Observer's spread about new singer/songwriters yesterday (02/09/07). Her style is stripped down motown-strength vocals with a very clean sound.Track: Cosmic Rough Riders - Revolution (In The Summertime) Tracknotes: I've played this a lot this summer, for me it's very nostalgic - it came out in 2001 and was everywhere I went that summer. Offered up as one last summer offering. 'We can pray for the sun/Let it shine on everyone/Sun-shine brings love'.Track: Machine Gun Fellatio - Unsent Letter***Tracknotes: I've put this on a couple of mix CDs so those who know me through Live Journal may recogni ...

Jobacle - The Podcast For Workers Who Still Have A Personality...
2007-09-02 08:14:00
Those that know me know I am a sucker for anything involving organisation, lists, filing etc. I know it's geeky. But I want another Pukka pad. I *need* more shinyshiny pens. I can't stop checking www.43folders.com in my lunch hour. I loved David Allen's Getting Things Done. Add to this my need for podcasts and you'll understand why I have been an avid listener to the Jobacle podcast since the start of the year. Previously called the Working Podcast and now simply called Jobacle, Andrew G.R.'s regular show is a great mix of practicalities and light hearted humour. Recently he's talked about why you should be talking to your colleagues more, how to relax at your desk, video resumes and the etiquette of reference letters. Each show is about 5 minutes, which means it's perfect for listening to on my way into work and it always makes me smile. Ain't too many podcasts I stay subscribed to beyond a couple of weeks but this one is a keeper.Go check Jobacle out, on the right you'll se ...

You Should Know... The Pierces
2007-09-01 05:53:00
Why you should know them: Allison and Catherine Pierce are sisters with an abundance of talent and their latest album, Thirteen Tales Of Love And Revenge, is very cool. They've changed direction and are now mixing their smart, funny lyrics with a variety of styles - slightly fantastic pop, country/folk and glamorous goth. It works a treat. Oh and they're hot.Where they're from: Alabama originally, now living in New York. Home-schooled to give their creativity free-rein, they were both ballet dancers before deciding to go with music as their career. When they're touring: They're in Germany this month but it might be a while till they make it to the UK, they were to be touring as the support act for Natasha Bedingfield (an odd combination) but Bedingfield put her tour on hold... their MySpace will hopefully update with UK dates one way or the other soon (fingers crossed). What others are saying: They were Rolling Stone's Breaking Artist in May.Recommended video:That would be the beh ...

Feel Good Friday Post
2007-08-31 00:00:00
Here's a track to start the weekend with, the classic 1990 dub track "Dub Be Good To Me" by Beats International, Fatboy Slim's little genre crossing side project.Track: Beats International - Dub Be Good To MeTracknotes: If you think you recognise it but haven't heard it before it could be because it's made up of Guns Of Brixton by The Clash, Just Be Good To Me by The SOS Band and the harmonica from the western film Once Upon A Time In The West. ...

Theme Post #1 - Audio Filth 1
2007-08-29 19:03:00
Jessica RabbitI was talking about this blog over the weekend. Just a little. You know, the odd excited squeak/extended monologue... Anyway, the guy I was talking to said that a music blog was actually way more personal than a life blog. You know, he's got a point. Thing is though, a little musical exhibitionism never hurt anyone. So I duly present to you this week's theme: Audio Filth.Audio Filth is my definition of anything that when you hear it doubles your flirtatiousness, makes you *grin like that* or think about jumping the next guy or girl you see. Or that boy *and* that girl. :)Obviously tracks that make you feel that way are not always suitable for kids. So this is an adults only mix for the most part (though I think it's just deviants like me who get ideas listening to Bob Dylan) - some of these tracks contain not safe for work lyrics. Also this is obviously the selection I am offering, you're mileage/method of transport may, and indeed probably does, vary.Which is why I ...

Join me in some gadgetlust - Creative Zen Vision M 60GB
2007-08-29 12:05:00
I am a very happy owner of a Zen Vision M 30GB. There's just one problem. Amazon.co.uk have the price of the new shinyshiny 60GB model down to £159. Which is less than I paid for the 30GB in spring last year...I love the 30GB ZVM - the way the videos on it kick the ipod out of the park for colour and quality, the ability to store word docs/excels etc on it, the FM radio (which I lovelovelove and the fact you can record radio as well is just perfect), the easy to use Windows Explorer style software, the shortcut button which allows you to get to a particular screen you want to 'bookmark' with one click (I set it to the Play mode screen so I can yo-yo between 'Random play all' and 'Most popular'), the simple and quick playlist creator, the easy to use navigation menus, it's sturdiness/reliability, the decent battery life... Then there's the better-than-an-ipod stuff. Like I said the video/picture quality is in another league. You don't need to use itunes. Thank the stars. I ju ...

A Documentary On A Stand Up Comedy God - Bill Hicks
2007-08-28 13:29:00
Bill Hicks. The Dark Poet. The First Rock N Roll Comic. A US comedian who died aged 32 just as he was making it as the star he deserved to be. I love Hicks. I love everything he stands for - freedom of thought, rebellion and that just right combination of politics and 'dick jokes'. BBC Radio 2 put out a show last week Bill Hicks: The Dark Poet which I only just got a chance to listen to using their Listen Again service. It's the best summary and showcase of his life and material I have come across in ages as it manages to get the right balance of material and friend and family interviews. This is really recommended, Phill Jupitus is the perfect person to narrate the documentary (a stand up comedian from Britain who is braincute and a contemporary of Hicks who worked some of the same clubs) and there are some excellent snippets of Hicks's shows in this - some of which I'd never heard before and I'm a total Goatboy obsessive. Listen to: Bill Hicks: Dark Poet (look for the Listen Ag ...

Monday Mix #1 - 27/08/07
2007-08-26 19:00:00
Each Monday I'll be sharing (a lucky) 13 tracks that don't share a theme, they're just worth sharing. Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :) This week I have for you -Track: The Dining Rooms - Thank YouTracknotes: Thoughtful and satirical stuff about what society is doing to us all, spoken word set to a laid back house tune. Think Suncream and you've got the overall vibe.Video: Strangely Fatboy Slim like video over at YouTube.Track: The Guillemots - Blue Would Still Be Blue***Tracknotes: I was played this for the first time about a month ago. It really made me shut up and listen, it's such a simple and yet haunting song. I've been playing it incessantly ever since.Lyrics: Can be read here but you're missing *that* voice.Track: The Coconut Monkeyrocket - Bloops, Bleeps, Bongos & BrassTracknotes: Heads up to Comfort Music for bringing this insanely witty and ...

You Should Know... Pelle Carlberg
2007-08-26 04:00:00
Why you should know him: Pelle Carlberg is The Divine Comedy mixed with Morrissey, Elvis Costello and just a touch of Belle & Sebastian. Modern pop that plays on all your favourite 60s melodies, snarky lyrics and handclapping all combined with a wry sense of humour. Where's he from: Sweden. Previously the brains behind Edson (3 neat albums in their own right and they still perform as a group occasionally) Pelle is signed with Labrador and now on his second solo album (Everything. Now! in 2006 and In A Nutshell this year.) When he's touring: Having done an American tour earlier in the summer he's in Italy, Germany and Spain in October/November.What others are saying: "If more twee acts balanced wit, bile, and heart like this track does, they wouldn't bore their detractors off of so many balconies." - PITCHFORKMEDIARecommended video:Well that would have to be the second release off his latest album In A Nutshell, the wonderfully singalong and delightful I Love You, You Imbecile (see ...

Welcome Post - Dance Music
2007-08-25 08:00:00
So. The first post. For this one I am going to give you some music to dance and tap your fingers along to... just because it seems like a good way to welcome you into my new space. :)Track: Jools Holland ft. Jamiroquai - I'm In The Mood For LoveTracknotes: So summery, so ahhhh. If you only take one song from this mix let it be this one. Track: Kelis - Young, Fresh 'n' NewTracknotes: This was never released in the US and received limited play here in the UK, funny because I prefer it to Milkshake.Track: Family Force 5 - Lose UrselfTracknotes: A great rock/dance song by a band made up of crazy named gents (even I concede that Crouton is odd as a name choice). Track: Hot Chip - Over And OverTracknotes: On a recent trip to Brighton I found myself in a pub with two fans who convinced me to give Hot Chip another listen, they were right and I was wrong. But I am the better person for being able to admit that... ;) This is electronic, addictive dance.Track: Five Star - Another WeekendTrackn ...
