Five On Rotation
2007-11-13 10:00:00
All very well surfacing but where's the music, I hear you say. Here are five that I have had on high rotation this week. Winter is definitely here now in the north of England so I am playing some nostalgia numbers...Track: Skunk Anansie - Cheap HonestyTracknotes: First sonething with teeth to start. Skin's voice is deliciously pure and grungy and hypnotic on this track. It showed up on shuffle at the start of last week and I have been seeking it out ever since.Track: Sunbear - FlutterbyeTracknotes: I know nothing about Sunbear, they've barely been scrobbled and I only vaguely remember they were Irish(?). This song is so dreamy and indie and loveable. Track: Ambulance Ltd - Stay TunedTracknotes: A song about being absent. :) The New York boys groove in a gently insistent way.Track: Buddy Holly - Cryin', Waitin', Hopin'Tracknotes: I love Buddy. I love this track particularly and have been playing it a lot this week. I think it's the chirpiness of what is supposedly a heartfelt lam ...
AWOL
2007-11-13 08:14:00

Monday Mix #8 - 29/10/07
2007-10-29 16:30:00
Each Monday I'll be sharing (a lucky) 13 tracks that don't share a theme, they're just worth sharing. Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three (this week, four) you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :) This week I have for you -Track: Special AKA - What I Like Most About You Is Your GirlfriendTracknotes: Sharp, bitchy and amusing. Acquired randomly a little while ago I think this deserves a wider audience...Track: Interpol - C'mereTracknotes: This track is a little too precise and clean but it has a great vocal on it - Paul Banks singing 'The trouble is that you're in love with someone else/It should be me, it should be me' as if he really means it. I do like it when this comes up on random as Interpol are not always a band I remember I like...Track: The Foo Fighters - What If I Do?***Tracknotes: So un-Foo-like this one, so bare and uncomplicated and all lovely wistful yearning. Foo Philosopher rath ...
You Should Know... Alton Ellis
2007-10-27 17:45:00
Why you should know him: You've probably never heard of him but Alton Ellis is the Godfather of Rocksteady. If you like R'n'B, ska, dancehall, dub or reggae you should know where they come from. If you don't really know what rocksteady is, give it a listen and see what you think when you do... :)Where's he from: Jamaica. Born in 1935, he got his start under the wing of the producer and founder of the Studio One label, Clement Dodd. In his eary years he worked as half a double act and also did duets with his sister Hortense. He became a staple of the Jamaican rocksteady scene and a headline act. Ellis moved to the UK in the 70's, formed his own label and faded from the scene a little. He is still touring infrequently at reggae festivals and compilation discs abound. What others are saying: They call him the 'Godfather of Rocksteady' - 'nuff said.Recommended video: There are no music vids for Ellis, he pre-dates them. But he is still going strong and has rafts of fans posting hi ...
You Should Know... Sneaker Pimps (And What Happened Next)
2007-10-23 05:52:00
Why You Should Know Them: The Sneaker Pimps are coming back. There is a new album planned for a 2008 release. I have no idea what it might sound like, but I am excited. In their time they have sounded like Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky, Morcheeba, Lamb, Garbage and Placebo. But it'll have been a six year gap between albums and it'll be interesting to see what they come up with. Chris Corner has been doing some erotic electronica in his solo project IAMX so I am waiting to see how much of that is going to be blended into the new stuff.Where They're From: Reading, England. They formed in the mid-nineties. The SPs have been through various incarnations. They started out as Chris Corner, Liam Howe and Kelli Dayton with Kelli on the vocals. The first album Becoming X was released in 1996 and their distinctive sound was launched. Then the boys decided they wanted a change of direction or they just plain didn't like Kelli or they didn't like the fact she was getting all the press at ...
Freaky Friday.... :)
2007-10-19 02:19:00
Friday and the weekend is here. I freaking love this song and have been listening to it on repeat on the way into work. Also it gave me a excuse for the post title. :)Track: Moist - Freaky Be BeautifulTracknotes: Canadian gothic delight from the 90s. One of my favourite songs when I am drunk, I am always hopeful that I will see it listed on a jukebox somewhere someday. 'I'm walking this railing's edge/Just to feel this good/And freaky be beautiful/You came following me/Like I knew you would'. Mmmmmm.Happy weekend, folks. ...
Theme Post #5 - The Daily Grind
2007-10-17 18:01:00
This week's theme is the daily grind, songs inspired by that four letter word, 'Work'. Songs about hating it, surviving it and seeing it for what it is. There are many, many songs about work but here's a selection I like. Just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :) Track: Butterfingers - I Love Work Tracknotes: It should come as no surprise that there is an Aussie song about 'loving' work... Only kidding. We know you're not workshy, just creative. :) 'Woke up this morning/A little too early/A little too tired/A little too surly' - sound familiar?Track: Dolly Parton - 9 - 5Tracknotes: 'Tumble out of bed and stumble to the kitchen/Pour myself a cup of ambition/And yawn and stretch and try to come to life...' This is *the* work song.Track: Belle & Sebastian - Step Into My Office, Baby***Tracknotes: Can't do work songs and not include and highly recommend this funny little track. Office romances con ...
Happy Monday
2007-10-15 17:17:00
I am in a silly, giddy mood and so I give you shmaltz. You know you want it. ;)Track: The Drifters - Every Night's A Saturday Night With YouTracknotes: 'Even on a Monday night/we can have a party for two/me and yo-oooo-uuu!' I am singing so loudly I am shushing myself in case I wake the neighbours... ::grin:: ...
Monday Mix #7 - 15/10/07
2007-10-14 19:00:00
After a brief pause due to technical problems normal service is resumed. :)Each Monday I'll be sharing (a lucky) 13 tracks that don't share a theme, they're just worth sharing. Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :) This week I have for you - Track: Punchline - Don't Try This At HomeTracknotes: Very likeable with a neat intro and some oddball lyrics: 'kid without a clue/floating in a fish tank/unsure if the rules I'm making are failsafe/I could be the brightest'.Track: Supermen Lovers - Starlight***Tracknotes: I am posting this for two reasons: first, I love the song in it's own right. Second, I love the video. Take a couple of moments out of your day and go watch the funky little alien thingies do their thing. It improve your day.Video: YouTube has the goods.Track: Nat King Cole - StardustTracknotes: Sublime, truly just beautiful. I love Cole's voice and ...
Monday Mix #6 - 01/10/07
2007-10-01 00:30:00
Each Monday I'll be sharing (a lucky) 13 tracks that don't share a theme, they're just worth sharing. Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :) This week I have for you: Track: The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues***Tracknotes: Forget Whole Of The Moon. This is way better. Jaunty Irish love song with swoonworthy lyrics: 'I wish I was a fisherman/tumblin' on the seas/far away from dry land/and it's bitter memories/castin' out my sweet line/with abandonment and love/no ceiling bearin' down on me/save the starry sky above/with light in my head/with you in my arms... ' ::swoons again:: Play this to me and you've stolen my heart. This is my most listened to track on my Zen.Track: James - Laid*** Tracknotes: Mid 90s goodness. A slow start but it builds and builds into something so infectious you'll drive your friends scatty with it. One of my favourite opening's ...
Genius Returns To R4 On 01/10/07
2007-09-30 12:28:00
I love good radio, it gets me through the day at work sometimes. I am delighted to discover that Genius is coming back for a third series on BBC Radio 4.R4 has a reputation as a channel filled with nothing but Gardener's Question Time and documentaries but it does in fact carry some great comedy shows as well - Armando Iannucci's Charm Offensive, The Now Show and of course the legendary Just A Minute are all R4 shows.Genius is a typical R4 comedy show - smart, funny and displaying British eccentricity. Basically people present their ideas that they think are genius and the host (Dave Gorman) and a special guest (who changes weekly) vote to decide whether it is genius or not and then pick their favourite from the show. So far so dull, right? No, no, no. These ideas are nuts. Some of my favourite ideas presented in the first two series:+ Fizzy bovril for sale alongside Coca Cola... and then if that's successful, fizzy custard... + Virtual Reality headsets for chickens. We know happy ...
You Should Know... Ephemera
2007-09-29 15:30:00
Why You Should Know Them: It seems odd writing an entry for a band that are so damn difficult to track and semm to have faded away for good but I sincerely believe that you should know about Ephemera. Their soaring vocals and blissful melodies combine to create something so pure that it is astonishing. Think The Cardigans meet Suzanne Vega and throw in a dash of Royksopp.Where They're From: Bergen in Norway. Christine Sandtorv, Inger Lise Storksen, and Jannicke Larsen started making music together in 1994 and released six albums between 1996 and 2004 (Glue (1996), Sun (2000), Balloons and Champagne (2001), Air (2003), Monolove (2004) and a collection of their tracks which had been used for films and adverts, Score (2004)) but seem to have done nothing since, their website is dead and despite having two myspace pages for Ephemera there is no news. It seems the girls have gone their own ways... indeed, Christine released a solo album in 2006 (First Last Dance). When They're On Tour: The ...
One Off Thursday Mix :)
2007-09-27 16:00:00
Guys, since I'm exhausted after working long, long days this week and only just got back to the UK I'm going to post a second random mix post instead of a theme post. I have listened to so much music this week while working that I have plenty I want to recommend... Theme posts will be back to normal next week I promise. Just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :) So I have for you - Track: Danny Michel - White LightningTracknotes: A Canadian singer/songwriter who should, if the world was a fairer place, be rich and famous. I think the best description for this track is raw and yet slick, that's what you get with a voice like that singing snarky lyrics and old time piano playing.Track: Simon And Garfunkel - I Am A RockTracknotes: Gleefully misanthropic and yet still so very recognisably S&G. My favourite S&G track this always puts me in a good mood. 'I am a roc-k/I am an is-l-and'.Track: Timbaland ( ...
Simian Mobile Disco
2007-09-24 19:02:00
Hi guys, I'm coming at ya live from Barcelona. Yeah, sometimes working as an IT trainer can be a shade more interesting than regular 9-5. Before you start thinking I am spoilt though I would like to point out that I have spent the evening solidly working with only a very good bottle of wine and BBC World Service to help me through it. It's a bank holiday here and fireworks keep going off but I have held true and continued working. That's dedication for ya.Anyways, on to the music. These guys are playing the Cockpit in Leeds on Wednesday night (26/09/07). I was in an 'kin evil mood when I realised I'd miss them by being away for work. I am however obviously giving friends/Leeds locals enough heads up that they can go and enjoy. And I am getting the pleasure of sharing their work with anyone else who reads this.Track: Simian Mobile Disco - I BelieveTracknotes: It's British electro stuff again (I'm going through a phase!) but it's very addictive, tuneful electro. The sort of stuff ...
Monday Mix #5 - 24/09/07
2007-09-23 18:01:00
Each Monday I'll be sharing (a lucky) 13 tracks that don't share a theme, they're just worth sharing. Obviously all of them are worth taking but just in case you're in a rush I'll flag the three you shouldn't leave without downloading in red and using a ***. :) This week I am quite proud of the mix I have for you. I really do recommend them all and would star them all if I was being pushy... On to the music - Track: The Raconteurs - Steady As She Goes*** Tracknotes: Here in the UK they are the The Raconteurs but you may know them as The Saboteurs if you're from Australia. Copyright reasons or something. Whatever name they go by this is insanely good for singing along to in the car. Track: Mr Hudson & The Library - Too Late Too LateTracknotes: There are traces of ska and reggae in here but it's subtle, they describe their sound as 'British RnB'. This has an infectious hook and I really want to recommend this one before everyone realises how good they are... :)Track: Drake ...
