JOE STRUMMER AND MICK JONES, TOGETHER ON STAGE
2007-08-01 04:20:28
I’m totally psyched to share this one with y’all. It’s a boot of a show by one of the greatest songwriter/rock singers in history, the great Joe Strummer of The Clash. On stage with The Mescaleros at West London’s Acton Town Hall on the evening of 15th November 2002. It was a benefit show, and one of his best ever. While he was playing, Joe looked out into the audience and saw a familiar face. And when it came time for the encore, that familiar face appeared on stage with a guitar. Mick Jones and Joe Strummer doing Bankrobber together for the first time in 20 years. Awesome. A few samples, and the zip. 1 Shaktar Donetsk 2 Bhindi Bhagee 3 Rudie Can’t Fail 4 Tony Adams 5 White Man in Hammersmith Palais 6 Mega Bottle Ride 7 Get Down Moses 8 Police & Thieves 9 Cool ‘n’ Out 10 Police on My Back 11 Johnny Appleseed 12 Coma Girl 13 I Fought the Law 14 Bankrobber (with Mick Jones) 15 White Riot (with Mick Jones) 16 London’s Burning (with Mick Jones) ZI ...

THE PARKAS-”Put Your Head in the Lion’s Mouth”
2007-07-31 03:38:01
A sprinkling of Velvet Underground creeps through The Parkas’ second release, “Put Your Head in the Lion’s Mouth.” Or maybe it’s the Replacements? You know the sound I’m talking about–fuzzy, haunting guitar licks and ’70s punkish vocals minus the snarl. But it’s definitely not throwback rock, once you’ve added the tough lyrics, such as the hook, “Every time that I surrender, you put the weapon in my hands,” from You and What Army, and the modern-rock style bursts of synthesizer. Producer Dale (”Great Lake Swimmers”) Morningstar deserves a special shout out as well–this is a crisp and clear album that easily have been made grungey or otherwise “improved” to the point of sounding mainstream and common. Dale lets the band break free to explore the complex rhythms and time changes of “Raggedy Ann” and the almost Van Morrison mysticism of “Let There Be Light.” ...
FOO A to Z (live, covers, and very rarities)
2007-07-30 04:15:00
I did a Foo A to Z about a year ago or so. Actually, it was a whole week of Foo. It didn’t go down too well. Guess my readers weren’t fans back then. I’m trying again because they are one of my top 5 favorite rock bands ever. And I didn’t even like Nirvana that much. A is for Arms Wide Open (Creed Cover)-Dave Grohl. Dave did another version of this during a soundcheck for some cable TV show. I’ve heard it, but I don’t have it. It was called “Legs wide open,” and it was about a strip joint. If anybody out there has it, I’d be in your debt if you’d send it. Been looking for it for years. B is for Back in Black (ACDC cover)-Foo Fighters (live). C is for The Colour and the Shape-Foo Fighters (live). The unreleased title track from their best album, a really keen live recording. It’s pretty rare that they do this tune. D is for DOA (video). You can get it for free off their official webside. E is for Eddie Money! ...

PICTURE OF THE DAY (with a soundtrack!)
2007-07-28 13:07:11
Ah, to be a young and foolish teen again . . . speaking of teens:  This is a live version of Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. If if every Nirvana song sounded like this, I would have loved the band. But their studio stuff never had this kind of energy, did it? ...
GIRL NOBODY-”Balaclava Casino Heist”
2007-07-28 11:19:47
Where the fuck has Karen O been lately? And Courtney Love? I dunno. But in the meantime, Marta Jaciubek-McKeever of Girl Nobody is a damn fine replacement. And Marta doesn’t just bring slightly-hoarse “dirty girl” vocals to the party. Obviously produced for alt-rock sensibilities, her voice reaches back to the Breeders, uses vocal effects but not to an extreme, or can suddenly go from a Sinead-style peak to a sultry, almost loving Edie Brickell whisper. I’m thinking specifically of the mellow ska of Sniffin’ Glue. She’s got the kind of vibrant, versatile voice that just makes you want to bend her over and –. Excuse me. I don’t want to ignore the rest of the band, because the whole lot of them are quite good. Nice drumming, good riffs, and some pretty good navel-gazing keyboards. This is an all-around tight band, and you should look forward to the September release of their new album. They won’t let me post the best cut ...
10 REASONS TO INVITE JESUS TO DINNER
2007-07-27 18:35:00
1. My new favorite song/video. I don’t know the artist, but I recognize the folks on the video. Show Them to Me-Rodney Carrington.” 2. Wichita Lineman-The Meters 3. 4. Jeremy Enigk, who released an unjustifiably slept on album last year, is coming out with a new EP. One song is now available. Not only should you listen to it, you should buy “World Waits,” his afore-mentioned record. The new single and a cut from World Waits are available at his site. 5. Don’t forget this great band! You’re a Wolf-Sea Wolf. 6. Sound As Language has a link to get a free CD from Pennsylvania’s The Pax Cecilia. 7. Cara, who I used to communicate with more frequently, runs a great blog and pointed me towards a new tune by Beat Radio-What I Love The Most. 8. This is totally sick but also totally deep if you think about it. Only problem is, Jesus is the one who is a zombie in the bible, not his disciples. 9. Ten Masked Men- Cry Me A River (Justin Timb ...
SHIM SHAM 5/5/2000
2007-07-27 08:34:52
I’m very sad to say that this will be my last Shim Sham post. Nobody has come forward to win an Editors CD by sending me a Shim show. So all I have left is the 2000 show, which was actually just Adam Duritz and David Immergluck. The quality on this one is significantly muffled, unfortunately. These are for you. I will wait until the end of the day tomorrow to give the Editors CD to someone else, so if you have a show, please please please let me get what I want. I Wish I Was a Girl Catapult Oceanside Crossing Muddy Water Pancho and Lefty Sullivan Street Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin) Goodnight, Elizabeth Rain King For the Sake of the Song A Long December Another Horsedreamer’s Blues Closer to You Mr. Jones Low (Cracker cover) How Can I Live Without You . . . SHIM SHAM 4/27/02
2007-07-26 15:08:52
Thanks to one of my wonderful readers, I’ve received two more Shim Sham shows, 5/5/00 and 4/27/02. And he’s received a copy of The Editors’ new album! Thanks, dude! You all owe him thanks. Download, thank him, and then, if you’ve got any more shows, SEND THEM TO ME! You, too, might get the new Editors CD--I have another one to give away. And if I run out of those, I’m sure I can figger something out for you . . . I didn’t get a whole lot of feedback on the first show. I’m posting this one now. Do you like these enough to want the May 2000 one as well? It’s got Crow covers of Led Zeppellin and Cracker, among others. Some singles and the zips. Shim Sham 4/27/02 PART ONE: Blues Run the Game (Paul Simon Cover) Crossing Muddy Water (John Hiatt cover). Adam actually recorded this for an album called, “The I-10 Chronicles,” a fantastic, little-known Americana collection that’s now out of print but is well worth seek ...
MOTOCADE-”Into the Fall”
2007-07-26 04:39:27
Tough, tight riffs and a trebly, whispery, strained falsetto? Check. Slow builds to adrenaline hooks? Check. The occasional profanity and slightly political overtones? Check. The latest member of the British Indie rock invasion is . . . From New Zealand. But Motocade isn’t just another Bloc Party soundalike. What the band lacks in innovation, they make up for in increased accessiblity. When Motocade play, they sound effortless, even on tracks that clearly weren’t singles. You might say they’re the FM-friendly version of Bloc Party. After listening straight through, the album does get a little redundant. I’d like to hear if there’s more they can do, because they obviously have good control over the postpunk genre. But, after all, this is only an EP, and for what it is it’s a solid debut. I’m sure we can expect more from this band in the future. buy link My Friends Bomb Squad ...

2007-07-25 07:20:15
I’m looking for the other Shim Sham shows–I’ve been looking for a long time. If you can send any of them to me, via snail mail, zip file, megaupload, whatever, I’d be ever so grateful. I’ve got two copies of “The End Has A Start” to give away. If you can send me one or more Shim Sham shows (other than the one below), it’s yours. If you can’t, send me your mailing address anyway.
