Featured Artist: Adam Franklin“It’s truly thrilling to hear Franklin amped up again and belting out urgent guitar anthems like opener 'Seize the Day' and 'Shining Somewhere.' The vocals certainly sound more weathered, and the effects rack has most likely been trimmed down a little from his Swervedriver days, but these two immediate standouts are unmistakably the sound of man enjoying his music.” -- No RipcordAdam Franklin spent the 1990s as singer, guitarist and main songwriter for London-based Swervedriver, the genre-breaching Creation Records rock band. Since then, he's collaborated with friends (most recently, a project with Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino called Setting Suns) and led the ambient/experimental Toshack Highway. Now, in support of his forthcoming solo debut, Franklin has announced a NYC album release party and West Coast tour dates in July. Plans for a full national tour at in the works for the fall.Adam Franklin - "Seize the Day"Adam Franklin - "Syd's Eyes"A ...
Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Happy Post-Father's Day to you and yours. I hope you were able to squeeze in some quality time with your father this weekend or your kids as I was. It's always hard to find something to get Dad for Father's Day. I mean, you can only get a man so many tools. This year I went out and got our family tickets to the Green Bay Packers Intersquad Scrimmage and Family Night in August, something we've never had the chance to attend. My dad, being a Green Bay fan like most men in Wisconsin, seemed to love it, which was a relief. I guess he was just happy not to get another power tool as well.I spent the day with my father yesterday changing the oil on some of the family cars and then watching the local summer college baseball league team play, The Wisconsin Woodchucks. Sitting on the third base line drinking Bud Lights and watching baseball with Pops...can't get much better than that if you ask me.I've actually done quite a bit of thinking about my dad over the weekend, spurred on by not on ...
New Songs from Architecture in Helsinki

It's Thursday, the boss is on vacation, the weather is nice, and there's no more chili dogs to satisfy to workers. I smell a revolution.Thankfully, we've got another article by Penelope Trunk to pass along, which is like being able to eat chili dogs over and over again. Oh how happy we'd all be.6 myths about workBy Penelope TrunkEach generation revolutionizes something. Today's younger generation is revolutionizing work. The goals people have, their values and opportunities have all changed drastically in the last 10 years. The new workplace demands new rules for success, yet people continue to get outdated advice based on persistent workplace myths. These myths about today's workplace are adapted from my new book, Brazen Careerist: The New Rules for Success.#1. Job hopping ruins your resume.Job hopping is one of the best ways to sustain passion and personal growth in your career. It also helps you build a network quickly and allows you to build your skill set faster than if you w ...
New Song from Iron and Wine
2007-06-13 05:36:00
Hump Day, and it couldn't have come sooner. Things have been dragging this week at the office and the sunny days and high 80 degree temps have made none too excited to be inside from 8-5, but today's offering of free chili dogs, elephant ears, ice cream, and soda from the HR department should appease anyone who's got their finger on the fishing pole hiding under their desk for the time being.War and Censorship at Wilton HighBy Amy GoodmanLast Sunday night, as millions of Americans tuned in to the two Tonys—the final episode of “The Sopranos,” to see whether Tony Soprano lived or died, and the Tony Awards, celebrating the best in American theater—actor Stanley Tucci (who played “Nigel” in “The Devil Wears Prada") was in an off-Broadway theater, the Culture Project, watching high school students perform a play about war.The production, “Voices in Conflict,” moved the audience to tears, ending with a standing ovation for the teenage actors, still reeling from a contro ...
Review: The National at the High Noon Saloon
2007-06-10 18:32:00
If you asked me to try and summarize Saturday night's lineup of Talkdemonic, Shapes and Sizes, and The National at The High Noon Saloon, I guess I'd simply say,"The National sweat on me."Opening act Talkdemonic really surprised me. Coming into the show I knew that they were an instrumental band, but I was blown away by the energy level they brought to the stage as the opening act for Shapes and Sizes and The National. The Portland based duo of Lisa Molinaro and Kevin O' Conner kicked off the night with some blistering cuts off their catalog of songs, producing the full, orchestra-like sound you'd expect to find at an Anima show were Anima to actually grow some teeth and dig into some songs a little harder. Am I saying that because I fell asleep at Anima's concert? Maybe, but it's more of a statement to the Pandora's box of sound that Talkdemonic opened up on stage Saturday night than it is a punch at Anima.Armed with a viola, laptop, drums, and a floor full of pedals, Talkdemonic ...

Big night in sports as LeBron and the Cavs try to rebound in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, while Roger Clemens makes his 2007 debut for the New York Yankees. Not so sadly, I'll be doing other things, which you can read about below...SPORTSDethroned?LeBron will learn, adapt after poor NBA Finals debutSAN ANTONIO -- Being LeBron James isn't as easy as the Pistons made it look.So jaded am I by years of endless dial-turning and channel surfing that I can hear the future broadcasts playing in my head. The next 48 hours is vitriolic. "LeBron James, what a disappointment.'' "The whole country was looking forward to these NBA Finals and we were all let down by LeBron.'' "LeBron is no Michael Jordan, let me tell you.'' "The Cavaliers would have been better off without LeBron.'' "Paris Hilton is having a better week than LeBron.'' "We have seen the new Sanjaya and his name is LeBron.''Already I am sick of hearing these things that haven't even been said yet. When I look at LeBron's NB ...
New Car Day
2007-06-08 04:39:00
If all goes well, I should be signing the final papers on my first new car purchase in six years tonight. On top of that, it's Friday, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to eat pizza for the third straight day. Delicious.NEWSThe JFK Pipeline "Plot": Another "Chilling" Example of Political and Media Hyperboleby Arianna HuffingtonThe JFK pipeline plot appears to be the work of yet another gang that couldn't jihad straight. Its ring leader made a living exporting broken air-conditioner parts to Guyana. Talk about your boom market! Where can I buy stock? There was no set plan. There was no financing. They didn't have any explosives -- and yet government officials were quoted calling the amorphous plot "one of the most chilling plots imaginable" that almost "resulted in unfathomable damage, deaths, and destruction." And people wonder why the public has become cynical about how the war on terror is being used for political purposes. What's more, the wave of red alert press coverage turns out t ...
New Goo Goo Dolls Tracks off Transformers
2007-06-07 05:02:00
So it's Thursday, which means we've made it over the midweek hump and can set our sails towards the weekend and The National concert. We had free pizza, soda, and ice cream at work yesterday, either because a) it's Wisconsin and they have to keep the fat quota up or b) it's Employee Appreciation Month. Regardless, I didn't think twice about diving in to some Domino's.Sometimes I get some pretty interesting emails, like this one that I received last night:Anonymous said: Who the fuck are you and why is my picture in your blog?? take it off creep.Well, I'm Goose, and your picture is probably on my blog because there are lots of pictures on my blog. Why Hillary Clinton Was the Winner of the Democratic Debate
2007-06-05 05:03:00
Why Hillary Clinton Was the Winner of the Democratic Debateby Arianna Huffington for The Huffington PostLast night on CNN, I said that Hillary Clinton was the winner of the Democratic debate. This morning, during a Creative Coalition-sponsored panel at the Radisson Hotel in New Hampshire, Lawrence O'Donnell, who was moderating, asked me if, after a good night's sleep, I wanted to "revise and extend" my remarks. No, I don't want to revise my remarks. I want to extend them.Hillary Clinton won because she arrived at the debate as the front-runner -- with a widening lead in national polls -- and left the debate with her position solidified. Her success was due in part to what she did during the debate, and in part to what Barack Obama failed to do.She came across as more comfortable in her own skin, and more natural and less programmed than in the past. And she exhibited an effortless charm that those close to her often rave about but that the public rarely sees. She even scored two of th ...
Work Smarter, Not Harder
2007-06-03 05:20:00
Yesterday was great - the kind of Saturday you're supposed to have after a long work week. As Ice Cube would say, "It was a good day."We went down to Stevens Point to test drive a 2006 PT Cruiser (a fad car, yes, but very functional for our needs and available at a great price), caught a Wisconsin Woodchucks game, and I received the complete Electrelane discography in the mail thanks to Felicia (ain't she great?).As great as this weekend has been, next weekend should be even better as we'll be trekking down to Madison to catch The National at the High Noon Saloon.News: Don't work too hard; it's bad for youMy friends and I like to remember the sage advice given by our high school physics teacher: "Work smarter, not harder." And according to a recent article by Penelope Trunk, there's some truth to that maxim:Penelope Trunk's column this week is an excerpt from her book, "Brazen Careerist." Chapter 12, "Don't be the hardest worker," offers ways to avoid long hours and job burnout ...
Will the Internet Revolitionize the Very Meaning of Politics?
2007-06-01 05:40:00
The web could yet bypass government and existing political communities, and either expand democracy in the process - or stifle itBy Jonathan FreedlandWednesday May 30, 2007The GuardianSo the Washington journalist who warned me 10 years ago that the internet was doomed, that it would collapse under the weight of all those pages, was wrong. The internet is here and changing everything, the way we work, shop, communicate, even fall in love. But what of society itself? The industrial revolution changed politics completely, leading to universal suffrage, as well as modern socialism, communism and fascism. What will the internet revolution do for the politics of our own age?Last week the revolutionaries were in town, as Google's high command came to London for a major think-in, led by the CEO, Eric Schmidt. He had to fend off accusations that Google poses a threat to society, storing up information on everyone who uses it. He was hardly reassuring when he said the company's ambition is to ...

Happy Hump Day. Hope you're on the road to recovery following the long weekend. We spent most of our Memorial Day weekend not camping, fishing, or wrestling leopards in bed, but lounging and watching movies. As a result, I was able come up with this formula:Pirates of the Caribbean 3 > Shrek 3 > Mission Impossible 3Yeah, it was the weekend of trilogies for me. I really liked Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. In fact, I thought it was the best one yet. I especially loved the ending.Shrek 3 was obviously the most diminished of the series, but still very enjoyable. Laughs are harder to come by, but the magic is still there. As usual, Puss n' Boots and Donkey steal the show. Plus, I have to factor in my appreciation for the makers of Shrek for helping to take the animation genre to a whole new level by portraying cross-gender characters and obvious cultural critique to an audience probably unaware of the full impact. That's you, kids.Mission Impossible 3 pretty much jumped the s ...

Mary McHugh visited the grave of her fiancé, Sgt. James J. Regan, who was killed in Iraq in February. He is buried in the new Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery for those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan [credit: New York Times]Give this Memorial Day its Full DueBy DEWAYNE WICKHAM for the Coshocton TribuneIn times like these, Memorial Day shouldn't be treated like most national holidays. It deserves better.Back in 1868, when Gen. John Logan called for the creation of a holiday (originally called Decoration Day) to honor those who fought in defense of this nation during the Civil War, he urged Americans to treat it with special reverence. He ordered members of his Grand Army of the Republic, then the nation's largest veterans' organization, to put flowers and flags on the graves of the Union Army's dead."Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners," Logan said. "Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the p ...
