Smashing Pumpkins Zeitgeist review and downloads
2007-07-25 05:04:00
First off, congratulations to I Guess I'm Floating for taking home The Good, The Bad, and The Unknown's 2006 Music Blog Awards Best Blog Award, although in my heart, they're all great.Featured Album: Smashing Pumpkins ZeitgeistI can't remember being more excited for a 90's band to put out a new record than I was for the Pumpkins to release Zeitgeist. When I got my hands on it a few days ago, I was pleased to hear more Siamese Dream likeness than Machina: The Machines of God, but still, you couldn't help feeling like something was just...missing. To give credit where credit is due, the album really does rock pretty hard for the first 10 or so songs, but when you've put out such classic albums as Gish and Siamese Dream it is going to be hard to live up to fans' expectations.Pitchfork recently reviewed the album and gave it a 4.9 (ouch). Here's a bit of what they said:There are many reasons-- cynical, sad, or artistic-- for Billy Corgan to pull the Smashing Pumpkins moniker out o ...

Packers to make play for Larry Johnson?
2007-07-23 05:27:00
Most mornings I wake up and buzz over to the Yahoo! Sports page to check on my 11 game lead in the fantasy baseball league and to see what sort of news is out there on the sports front, only to be disappointed by the Packers' lack of activity in the off season regarding free agents and trades.Well, today was not one of those mornings, as I woke up this Monday to this story from Rotowire.com:Larry Johnson: Packers May be InterestedRotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.comUpdate: There have been whispers that the Packers will make a play for Johnson, who is threatening to hold out as he enters the final year of his contract with the Chiefs, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.Recommendation: Johnson is reportedly looking for an eight-year deal worth between $80 and $90 million, and the Chiefs are reportedly willing to listen to trade offers. The Packers have some cap room to play around with, but the Chiefs' initial asking price (thought to be first-, second- and third-round picks) is too stee ...

The Coathangers and Dubious Ranger
2007-07-21 20:56:00
Had been hoping to post more this weekend but got sidetracked by the real life. That'll happen I suppose.Couple observations from this weekend:*It's not a stereotype that people from Illinois are bad drivers. I had to drive Felicia up north to work this morning and was cut off by at least two drivers, saw a couple others driving recklessly, and was tailgated by another convertible because I wasn't going fast enough in the right lane. And yes, all of those cars had Illinois license plates. They come up to Northern Wisconsin to stay at their hundred thousand dollar log cabins on the lake and drive recklessly I suppose.*Homemade beer is either really good or really bad. Luckily the stuff I had this weekend was really good. Sweet like New Glarus Spotted Cow, but better.*Having a beach bash concert is a good idea unless it's in the middle of a field in 60 degree weather and everyone at the concert is over 50.*The new Smashing Pumpkins album delights me. To a point. The same can be said ...

Featured Artist: Auxiliary House
2007-07-16 05:34:00
Caught the new Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie last night with the family. Fairly intricately devised with a lot of plot building, but I thought it fell a bit short in punch, dare I say a bit short as well? Almost as if they were spending the entire movie setting up the next one. Regardless, still some good old family fun with Potter and the gang, although I still refuse to read any of the books.MUSICNurses to play MadisonNurses will be in Madison, WI on August 19 at The Loft w/ Portugal The Man, This Will Destroy You, and Photo Atlas. For more on Nurses, check out their site at Riot Act Media.Nurses - "Alone at Last"Featured Artist: Auxiliary House[Press Release]Auxiliary House is a different kind of band. High Speed Chase Ends in My Back Yard
2007-07-14 08:40:00
Very rarely does anything happen in my Central Wisconsin town to note, but Thursday night might have been one of those moments:A 21-year-old De Pere man who led police on a high-speed chase Thursday heard charges against him in court Friday afternoon.Shane Dillon pleaded not guilty to operating a vehicle after license revocation. He will have to wait until 9:45 a.m. Wednesday for his preliminary hearing to enter a plea on a charge of fleeing an officer.Dillon was convicted of fleeing an officer in February 2006 in Milwaukee and remains on probation for that offense, Marathon County Sheriff's Lt. Dale Wisnewski said. Dillon faces charges for violating probation.Dillon had been stopped by a sheriff's deputy at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 39 near Business Highway 51 for a registration violation when he sped off, Marathon County Sheriff's Lt. Randy Albert said Thursday night.Dillon traveled up to 140 mph as he was being pursued, said Marathon County Deputy District Attorney T ...

Concert Announcement: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!
2007-07-12 20:19:00
I know this announcement is a little early....ok, so three months early...but Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! will be playing Madison, WI at The Annex on Saturday, October 6th, and you should definitely go if you're in the area. Not only will the show be awesome, but it will also be on my birthday, making it doubly awesome. I caught their show at 1st Avenue/7th Street Entry, and that rocked, so there's no reason this one won't as well, except for the noticeable absence of Architecture in Helsinki unfortunately.I sound like a Valley girl.Get your tickets here.Wisconsin indie music blog featuring free mp3 downloads from today's top independent music artists, news, social commentary, political watercooler gossip, and concert reviews.

Happy Friday, hope you all enjoyed the week. If you're wondering why I'm posting on a Friday, well, I'm on vacation. We're heading out to Pittsburgh tomorrow until July 11th to soak up the sun a few miles away from Wisconsin and drink Yuengling til the sun goes down.I was trying to figure out if it would be possible for me to bring some Yuengling back in a suitcase since I talk about it often but can't show it to anyone out here because it's not sold out here. After some perusal of the FAA regulations yesterday I think I've figured out that it can be packed in a suitcase, up to 5 liters worth, as long as it's sealed and in retail packaging. So it looks like I'll be bringing a few of those bad boys home with me.Also, wanted to mention that I will be bringing my laptop with my on the trip, so expect a few midweek posts here and there when we've got downtime, which if all goes as planned, should be pretty much 100% of the time. We're hoping to spend a good chunk of the trip wit ...

Bishop Allen Summer Tour + Figures MP3
2007-06-29 06:57:00
Bishop Allen Spend Summer Months on the RoadThere isn't going to be a better summertime pop record than Bishop Allen's "The Broken String", and now everyone will have the chance to hear the band play it live across North America. Featured Artist: Pearlene
2007-06-29 06:27:00
Featured Artist: PearleneGot an email from Brooke Black, Publicity Director for Pirate! gushing about the band Pearlene.[Brooke]: So I went out to see a band called Pearlene the other night at my usual hangout in Brooklyn. I had been out more than I wanted to be all weekend and they happened to be playing on a Sunday night. Though I was tired and admittedly a little cranky, this band kicked my ass into shape. They were full on, belting out their vocals and nearly breaking their instruments. The crowd was loving it. It might as well have been a Friday night at a dive bar in the Smokies where everyone that knows each other gets together for a great night of blues and rock n roll music.Pearlene is currently touring behind their third album, For Western Violence and Brief Sensuality, after having put out a couple records on Dim Mak and Sympathy For the Record Industry. Front man Reuben Glaser is an incredible guitar player and vocalist. He's also a completely laid-back dude, full of swag ...

The Union Trade
2007-06-23 08:00:00
Featured Artist: The Union TradeIt is another Tuesday night, and The Union Trade are filtering into their practice room deep in the warehouse district of San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood. As the band greets each other with casual comfort, someone notices sawdust on the industrial looking carpet, but just who the carpenter was is not immediately apparent. “Did you Eric?” the band’s bass player, Nate Munger, turns and asks Eric Salk, guitarist, and the man with whom he shares vocal duties. Nate directs a bemused look back down at the floor while guitar player Don Joslin and drummer Dan Rodkewich set up around him. Just five days ago the band played their biggest show yet at local venue, the Rickshaw Stop, for the release party for their debut EP “Now The Swell” (Tricycle Records). At the moment, however, they seem more captivated by the fact that there seems to be no explanation for the mystery saw dust...(read more)The Union Trade - "Violent and Beautiful"The Uni ...
