Concert news and notes: Imperial Teen, CYHSY
2007-08-25 13:29:00
Still working out some layout issues after losing my background image mysteriously a few days ago. Bear with me, eh?Felicia and I snagged tickets to check out Imperial Teen on October 5th at The Entry in Minneapolis. I'm not half as excited as she is considering she's been wanting to see them since she was a teenager, but it'll be a good time nonetheless. We've also got tickets to check out Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! a few hours southeast in Madison the next night for my birthday, so it looks like that weekend will be music filled for sure.Want to join us? Check out tickets for the Oct 5 Imperial Teen show in Minneapolis or the Oct 6th Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! show. You can stream and download the new single from Imperial Teen, "Shim Sham," at I Rock Cleveland. Also, if you've got a few minutes to spare and you obviously do if you're here, drop by The Constant Skeptic and check out a clip for the upcoming Wes Anderson film "Darjeeling Limited" starring Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brod ...

Eddie Vedder goes Into the Wild
2007-08-22 05:15:00
As originally reported in Paste Magazine:At home, writing lyrics of mountain tops with him on top, Eddie Vedder’s has his arms raised in a V. The triumph is all Vedder’s, but the mountains belong to the lead character of Sean Penn’s directorial feature Into the Wild for which the Pearl Jam front man has recorded a solo record. The soundtrack, to be released Sept. 18, features 11 jams Vedder scored for what Sean penned (see what we did there?).Based on the best selling book by Jon Krakauer, Into the Wild follows the true story of college graduate Christopher McCandless (played by Emile Hirsch), who abandons his possessions, gives his life savings to charity and hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness. No word yet on whether Vedder has found a better man.Into the Wild soundtrack tracklist:1. Setting Forth2. No Ceiling3. Far Behind4. Rise5. Long Nights6. Tuolumne7. Hard Sun8. The Wolf9. End of the Road10. Society11. GuaranteedIf that weren’t enough to prove Vedder’s vital ...

CIA, FBI computers used for Wikipedia edits
2007-08-17 05:20:00
CIA, FBI computers used for Wikipedia editsWASHINGTON (Reuters) - People using CIA and FBI computers have edited entries in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia on topics including the Iraq war and the Guantanamo prison, according to a new tracing program. The changes may violate Wikipedia's conflict-of-interest guidelines, a spokeswoman for the site said on Thursday. The program, WikiScanner, was developed by Virgil Griffith of the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico and posted this month on a Web site that was quickly overwhelmed with searches. The program allows users to track the source of computers used to make changes to the popular Internet encyclopedia where anyone can submit and edit entries.WikiScanner revealed that CIA computers were used to edit an entry on the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. A graphic on casualties was edited to add that many figures were estimated and were not broken down by class.Another entry on former CIA chief William Colby was edited by CIA computers to e ...

Featured Artist: Headway
2007-08-17 05:18:00
Received a nice little email from Elizabeth of Nottingham asking me to check out a band called Headway.According to their Suretone Records profile,"...The Headway sound is elegant piano mixed with a driving rhythm section and swooping rock guitars. Beautifully crafted songs are overlaid with the unique voice and melodies of David Wright. Not just a mesmerizing vocalist, but a great front man too the kind of front man that the UK is renowned for producing.Having recently been signed to Suretone Records (in partnership with Interscope Records/Universal Music Group) by President Jordan Schur, the band is currently putting the finishing touches to their debut album that is being produced by internationally acclaimed producer Josh Abraham (30 Seconds from Mars, Velvet Revolver, Staind, Courtney Love)."Read more about the band at Suretone and check out one of Elizabeth's favorite tracks from them, "Safety," and a few others as well, below:Headway - "Safety"Headway - "Always the Same"Headway ...

Get Lost with Magnetic Fields
2007-08-07 05:36:00
Hmm, looks like there's a problem with my blogger background image. Looks like I'll have to work on a new one. Bollocks.Featured Artist: Magnetic FieldsMy introduction to Magnetic Fields came from Arcade Fire's KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic show in 2005 in which the band covers the Magnetic Fields song "Born on a Train." Since that time, I've really dug into Magnetic Fields' full catalog, and have become a fan of this truly wonderful band.[Rolling Stone biography] If you appreciate someone who revels in rhyming libertarian with Herbert von Karajan, look no further than Stephin Merritt. Merritt has recorded under several aliases -- but in the end, these "groups" come down to one deep-throated, black-humored singer/ songwriter/multi-instrumentalist.The first two Magnetic Fields albums, now on one CD, showcase sexually ambiguous lyrics, loopy arrangements, and the disaffected voice of Susan An-way. But they suffer from an air of inconsequentiality. Merritt took over vocals on The Hou ...

Best Drug Scenes, MXPLAY, and Wisconsin life
2007-08-04 07:33:00
Heading to Lambeau Field tonight to catch the Green Bay Packers intersquad scrimmage and Family Night. I'm not sure how Family Night involves a case of Miller Geniune Draft that I've got packed and ready to go in my trunk but hey, families get thirsty. The Wisconsin Valley Fair is in full swing in my little Central Wisconsin town, and boy do we have a couple of real headliners: Weird Al Yankovic and The Gin Blossoms, which would be great, you know, if we wanted to party like it's 1999. Hey, 10 years ago we had the Goo Goo Dolls...that has to count for something, right?I have no idea what this song is saying, but it's catchy:Oreska Band - "20 Tips"Maxim's Best Movie Drug MomentsFrom Pulp Fiction to the stoner classic Half Baked, drugs have been at the forefront of many of the defining scenes in cinematic history. Maxim.com recognizes that drugs have played a pivotal role in some of the best movies to ever grace the silver screen. Check out Maxim.com’s video homage to “the bes ...

The Shondes
2007-08-01 05:24:00
We previously featured The Shondes back in January but wanted to remind everyone of this band flying under the radar still.According to their bio on Sonicbids.com,The Shondes (taking their name from the Yiddish word for "shame" or "disgrace") are a rock quartet based in Brooklyn, New York, who make dramatic and powerful rock music, fusing elements of Classical and traditional Jewish music with their punk sensibility. Made up of drums (Temim Fruchter), bass (Louisa Solomon), guitar (Ian Brannigan), violin (Elijah Oberman), and powerful, intertwining vocals (Solomon, Fruchter, Oberman), they have been compared to Patti Smith and Sleater Kinney. The result is a unique sound that is devastating, heartbreaking, and transcendent, transfixing audiences with the richness and passion of their songs. The Shondes are known for their complex, melodic rock sound combined with soaring, rich vocals, and a live show that explodes with energy. Their instrumentation fuses the various musical traditions o ...

Pawnshop Roses
2007-08-01 05:18:00
Fans of Drive by Truckers and Kings of Leon will gel with this blues/country/rock outfit out of Philadelphia, PA that has appeared on Good Morning America and was the winner of the YouTube Underground Contest for Best Live Video.Though they are family now, Pawnshop Roses were four strangers who came together for the purpose of making good music and having a good time doing so.Years ago, singer and primary songwriter Paul Keen discovered MTV and Oasis and began teaching himself how to play on his mother’s old acoustic guitar. With his new found passion and armed with a head full of songs he dove into the scene looking for right people to play his songs.Fast-forward a few years later and Keen forms Pawnshop Roses with Kevin Bentley and Justin Monteleone whom he met through a “musicians wanted” ad. Both Kevin and Justin are versatile instrumentalists who function as guitar players, bass players and vocalists in the band. Percussionist/vocalist Rich Fogg is the most recent member to ...

Colleges Charging Different Tuition Rates Based on Your Major
2007-07-31 05:36:00
I ran across this story last night on The Consumerist about colleges charging different tuition rates based on your major. I was particularly surprised to see the University of Wisconsin as the college being referenced:Some state colleges and universities have started charging different undergraduate tuition rates depending on what the student decides to major in. Business majors at the University of Wisconsin pay $500 more each semester than do their liberal arts peers. Graduate schools have been doing this for years: Law school and med school tuition tends to be more per term than, say, an advanced degree in comparative literature. But is it fair?Starting this fall, juniors and seniors pursuing an undergraduate major in the business school at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, will pay $500 more each semester than classmates. The University of Nebraska last year began charging engineering students a $40 premium for each hour of class credit. And Arizona State University this fall w ...

Why the Milwaukee Brewers will win the NL Central Division
2007-07-28 19:11:00
I realize this is a "music blog" per say, but I've really got the itch to talk some baseball, in particular the National Leage Central Division race.Being for the most part a lifelong resident of Wisconsin, aside from my two year stint in Pennsylvania for graduate school, I've gone almost my whole life without seeing the Brewers contend for the playoffs. Since putting together a magical run in 1982, the Brewers have been relegated to Major League Baseball's bottom of the barrel. However, a great farm system has finally helped produce a Brewer's team with the punch to contend for the NL Central crown. At 57-48 after today's loss to division rival St. Louis, the Milwaukee Brewers are the surprise of the National League. A plethora of good, young talent raised in the farm system has helped propel the Crew to first place in the NL Central division, but only 2.5 games ahead of the talent-laden Chicago Cubs. After building up an 11 game lead in the division earlier in the year, the Brewe ...
