The Deadly Syndrome
2007-09-15 08:39:00
After a streak of sold-out LA shows (Now Blog This, Filter’s Revenge of the Sunset Strip, and a CD release party at The Echo this past weekend), Silver Lake indie pop quartet The Deadly Syndrome finally unveiled its highly-anticipated Dim Mak debut, The Ortolan, yesterday. Borrowing from the Arcade Fire’s grand palate, and throwing in some pastoral Tim Buckley for good measure, the album is a quaint, surprisingly energetic slab of quirky folk music. But don’t take our word for it -- you can hear it now if you head over to Virb.com, where the band is streaming the album in full. What the press is saying about The Deadly Syndrome:"This hodgepodge of old and new friends began messing around, making noise in the guesthouse of a little ranch, and soon played their first “show” on the porch for some pals. Within months, they were appearing on bills with Silver Lake’s biggest bands (including Cold War Kids and Monsters Are Waiting) and had earned a reputation for explosively energe ...

Shout Out Louds "Impossible" video
2007-09-12 05:13:00
Veritas Lux Mea favorite Shout Out Louds sophomore LP Our Ill Wills hit stores yesterday, and what better way to celebrate than with a music video for the track "Impossible"? OK, I'm sure there are probably lots of better ways to celebrate, such as with champagne and caviar and Jay-Z and what not, but this will have to do.Wisconsin indie music blog featuring free mp3 downloads from today's top independent music artists, news, social commentary, political watercooler gossip, and concert reviews.

Are You Ready for Some Football?
2007-09-09 08:42:00
Green Bay's Cullen JenkinsThe first NFL Sunday of the season kicks off in just a few short hours and we couldn't be more excited. Well, actually, we probably could; our beloved Green Bay Packers have a tough draw in Week 1 as they play host to the Philadelphia Eagles. The biggest challenge the Packers will face in this game is developing a formidable run game. With only two healthy backs available in rookies DeShawyn Wynn and Brandon Jackson, the Pack will look for rookie Jackson to prove he can carry the load. The Eagles run defense was an issue last season with the Eagles ranked 26th overall against the rush, but because of the inexperience in the Packers' backfield it essentially neutralizes the advantage Green Bay would have. That being said, it should be a fairly offensive matchup.Immediately following the Packers game I'm heading to the bar to catch the Bears-Chargers game. I'm actually going to say I think this game is going to be low scoring and turnover prone. But only on ...

Middle Distance Runner
2007-09-09 08:29:00
Middle Distance Runner is an indie-pop outfit from Washington, D.C. whose 5 members combine their different influences to create a multi-layered sound that seamlessly blends their disparate influences. In addition to indie-pop, their sound has elements of heavy rock and shoe-gazing layered beneath the accessible surface.Singer Stephen Kilroy and drummer Erik Dean usually build the lyrical and melodic framework of a song, and are followed into the studio by guitarists Allan Chappelear and Jay Smith. Chappelear does his best to bring out a grittier side of the pop tendencies of Kilroy and Dean, while Smith fills the sonic holes with ambiance. Bassist Ian Glinka provides his britpop-influenced backdrop to the songs, completing the tapestry of styles that comprises Middle Distance Runner's sound. In 2006, MDR self-released their debut album, Plane in Flames to critical and popular acclaim. MDR recently completed a self-titled EP containing new and reworked material, which will be availabl ...

New Idea Society
2007-09-09 08:24:00
New Idea Society is a band that was originally formed in Boston by Mike Law of Euclid and Stephen Brodsky of Cave In. Now residents of New York City, New Idea Society's music ranges from solid rock style songs with edgy guitar riffs to up-beat indie rock acoustic pieces. One of the band's strong suits is a knack for blending bright, catchy melodies with dark themes and brooding lyrics. A key feature of the band's early releases is Law and Brodsky's use of simplistic recording techniques, relying on their instruments to produce the desired sounds rather than using external compressors or outboard gear. New Idea Society recorded their first two releases, "Questionnaire EP" and You Are Awake Or Asleep in their homemade studio.New Idea Society is the latest release on the Washington D.C-based label, Exotic Fever, run by Katy Otto. The label is known for putting out some really great independent bands, ranging from melodic girl fronted post punk to pretty aggressive D.C.-style rock. The ...

Phosphorescent Announces "Pride", Offers Free MP3, Tours U.S. in October
2007-09-09 08:18:00
Musicians often head to New York - it's a familiar story. But something magical happened when Matthew Houck picked up stakes halfway through making his new Phosphorescent record, "Pride", and moved to Brooklyn from Athens, Georgia. "Pride" is something different. While it's not without the moments of sheer abandon that have made Phosphorescent's work unmistakable-"At Death, A Proclamation" thunders into familiar territory-mostly gone are the messy marching bands and evangelical fervor. Here, Houck instead channels something more mystical and haunting, offering up a dark, meditative set of songs that is all the more spiritual-sounding for its restrained tone. On previous albums, he's recruited guest musicians to fill the gaps, but on "Pride", Houck has only enlisted the services of a makeshift choir, otherwise recording every instrument himself. His achingly cerebral delivery recalls Arthur Russell, but honestly, "Pride" sounds like nothing else we've ever heard. These are poe ...

Tyler Donovan set to take helm at Wisconsin
2007-09-01 06:25:00
Trust through a tough-and-rumble attitudeBy JEFF POTRYKUSjpotrykus@journalsentinel.comMadison - Marcus Coleman joined the Tyler Donovan fan club on Nov. 11, 2006.Donovan, making his first start for the University of Wisconsin, was drilled in the mouth by an Iowa defender on a screen pass and was sent sprawling to the Kinnick Stadium grass. Coleman was curious to see how his quarterback would respond."He got up pretty slow," Coleman, UW's starting center, said earlier this week. "He came back to the huddle and was a little out of it. He had blood in his mouth. It was pretty cool."He is a tough kid."Tough and eager to open the season as UW's No. 1 quarterback for the first time when the seventh-ranked Badgers welcome Washington State to Camp Randall Stadium at 2:30 p.m. today."Going into my senior year," Donovan said, "obviously you want to end on a high note."Donovan, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound fifth-year senior from Arrowhead High School, looks more GQ pretty than GI Joe tough. Even his t ...

The Hot Springs
2007-09-01 06:21:00
Montreal’s Hot Springs are bringing something new to the table.Their first full-length album, Volcano, dishes out a combo of perfect pop that sinks its fangs in, rock that doesn't stoop to knuckle draggers, and fluff-free ballads. Volcano also throws a flurry of psychedelia into the mix and, yes – you can even dance to it.The Hot Springs performing "Bacteria"Along with Montreal acts like The Besnard Lakes and Malajube, Hot Springs are among the most exciting bands to spring from the second wave of the Montreal music explosion, with Volcano quickly earmarked as one of the best records of 2007. The album hasn’t even come out yet (it's out in Canada Sept 18 on Quire Records--coming soon in the US), and they’ve already been featured on MySpace, iTunes and the cover of the Montreal Mirror.Lead-off single, "Headrush," comes at you with a hard-rocking seventies vibe, hinting at Heart, with the piss and vinegar of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, yet still manages to distance Hot Springs from ...

The Brewers desperately need some relief
2007-08-28 21:42:00
Middle relief is killing the Milwaukee Brewers chances of contending for a NL Central Division Title.I just watched Chicago Cubs reliever Bob Howry hold the Brewers' Gabe Gross off with a 12 pitch at bat. Top of the 8th, two men on, two outs in the bag, and he feeds Gross 12 straight fastballs, all 94-95 miles per hour. After a grueling 12 chances Gross pops out to end the inning. Incredible effort, but that's about it.In the previous inning, Brewers reliever Scott Linebrink was in a similar situation with two men on and two outs, holding on to a 3-2 Brewers lead. But then Linebrink managed to give up three runs on three hits to squander that lead, leaving us at the current situation with the Brewers down 5-3 to Chicago in the bottom of the 8th.The difference between pitchers like Bob Howry and Scott Linebrink may just cost Milwaukee its chance at the NL Central crown.Wisconsin indie music blog featuring free mp3 downloads from today's top independent music artists, news, social com ...

Red Collar
2007-08-28 05:20:00
Received an email last night from Todd asking me to check out the Durham/Chapel Hill, NC band Red Collar.A rock-indie-alternative outfit in the veins of Fugazi and Jawbox, Red Collar will be working this winter with producer, Brian Paulson (Wilco, Archers of Loaf, Superchunk) on a full length album to follow up their 2007 debut, The Hands Up EP.What sets Red Collar apart from most new R-I-A (rock-indie-alt) bands these days is that they've actually got some quality lyrics, as evidenced by the ones in "Hands Up,":I got my Bachelor's, got my Master's,I got my Doctorate, yes I'm a go-getterCocaine and caviar, oh I'm bonafideAn old man says, 'Buy you a scotch son? When I was young I used to buy it by the case. But here's to the new face! Here's to the rat race! Here's to thirty years in my briefcase!'As Grayson Currin writes in his review of the band for Indy Weekly, "This may be a red band in a red state, but their symbology is more Lenin and Marx than W and donkeys."Interested? Jaguar Love
2007-08-26 08:04:00
Two bands I used to half-sorta enjoy, The Blood Brothers and Pretty Girls Make Graves, are now forming one band together that I will undoubtedly half-sorta enjoy a little more.According to Punknews.org,While rumours about the future of the The Blood Brothers remains in doubt, the members of that band continue to surface in new projects. The latest is Jaguar Love and the group features Johnny Whitney and Cody Votolato from the band as well as Jason Clark from Pretty Girls Make Graves. The band has posted two songs from the project and you can find them as well as befriend them here.If you didn't catch this post over on I Guess I'm Floating featuring the Foo Fighters covering Arcade Fire's "Keep The Car Running" and Arctic Monkey's giving their take on The Stroke's "Take it or Leave It," then I suggest you get moseyin' on over now, ya hear?Last but not least, has anyone caught the show The Two Coreys? It's a reality series showcasing the current lives of Corey Haim and Corey Feldma ...
