Vote Mitt Romney and Stab Terrorists in the Thigh
2007-10-17 06:24:00
Romney's New National Security Adviser Said He'd Torture "In A Heartbeat"Retired General James "Spider" Marks, who has just been named a new national security adviser to Mitt Romney's campaign, asserted in a 2005 interview that he would readily torture prisoners to save a soldier's life or stop a terror bomb, saying: "I'd stick a knife in somebody's thigh in a heartbeat."In announcing the appointment of Marks, the Romney campaign put out a press release emphasizing his "more than three decades of experience in the intelligence field." But according to CNN, Marks also is a teacher of "interrogation." And as a CNN analyst, he elaborated on his views of torture on the network on November 8, 2005: TOM FOREMAN (voice-over): If you could save the life of a soldier, rescue the hostage children; stop the next terrorist bomb by torturing a prisoner for information, would you do it? JAMES "SPIDER" MARKS, MAJOR GENERAL, U.S. ARMY (RET.): I'd stick a knife in somebody's thigh in a heartb ...

Your 33 Black Angels
2007-10-16 06:20:00
Great to be back because I get to pass along fan-suggested music like the one I received from Bryan about one of his favorite bands, Your 33 Black Angels.According to their Myspace page, "Y33BA was born in Brooklyn, but dreamed in a West Harlem flophouse. There was a bottle of Wild Turkey, grown men in boxers, and far too much bachata music going around. We were not fond of "shoegazer" sensibilities or requisite visits to tatoo parlors; we wanted to sing about the basics: cold merciless women, irresponsible philosophy and violence. We all [unprintable under advice of legal counsel] and insanity and made it our torch: Benji with his 'stache and rolled tobacco, John with his dominant chin and [unprintable], Josh with his guile, mind control and[unprintable], and Tim with myriad indulgences and Epicurean essence. They took on the monikers from today's hip slang, and the Earth was made anew...The M-Diddy, J-O-C, BJ KastIron, and W, the undertaker."Get your copy of their album, "Lonely St ...

Secretly Canadian Welcomes THROW ME THE STATUE to the Fold
2007-10-16 06:14:00
[Press Release] We're uber pleased to announce Seattle's Throw Me The Statue to the Secretly Canadian family. Conceived and fronted by Scott Reitherman, TMTS has been delivering its wondrous concoction of cheapo sequenced synths, brass ensembles, fuzzed out beats and epic vocal melodies to various Seattle clubs for the past year. The band's debut, "Moonbeams", was constructed primarily by Reitherman and Casey Foubert (Pedro The Lion, Sufjan Stevens, Richard Swift). TMTS's live show has been described as "Wildly energetic. Live drums, electric guitars, and four-part harmonies replace Reitherman's multitracking, and the able, athletic band switch instruments, add extra percussion, and throw in melodica and glockenspiel with an abandon grounded by serious musicianship." (The Stranger, 2007)Due in February, "Moonbeams" "is both complicated and personally cohesive. Each song expands beyond the bedroom atmosphere often attributed to mellow solo artists. The opening track, 'Young Sensu ...

Moving Day!
2007-10-04 05:11:00
Today is a pretty big day for us. Unfortunately, it's also the last day I'm going to be able to post until we get internet at our new place, which we are moving to on Saturday.Today is the last day I'll have to drive 67 miles one way to go to work. It's also the day we're going to sign the lease, pay the rent, go shopping for house stuff, and tape the season premier of 30 Rock (easily one of the best shows on TV).Tomorrow we're headed to Minneapolis to catch Imperial Teen at the 7th Street Entry. We'll be back here Saturday morning, on my 26th birthday, to pick up the moving truck and start haulin'. And from there on out it's a whole new ballgame (speaking of ballgames, are the Rockies not destined to be this year's Cinderella World Series team? What a story).I hope to be back to posting in the near future because I've got about 60 emails from different PR companies, bands, and musicians asking me to post about their stuff. Thanks for sticking around with us this long, and we ...

Radiohead tells fans to pay what they want for album
2007-10-02 05:11:00
Radiohead, one of the world's most influential rock bands, plans to sell its new album from its Web site as a digital download and let fans choose what they want to pay. With music sales in decline globally for seven successive years, the industry is engaged in a debate over how best to reverse the trend.Radiohead said its seventh studio album "In Rainbows" would be available from Radiohead.com from October 10 in MP3 format, meaning it can be played on all digital devices. In the latest twist in the move to digital music, fans can choose how much to pay, or can pay nothing if they prefer. The band will also offer a special edition boxed set for 40 pounds ($82) which will be available later and will include two vinyl albums, a CD version of the new album and a second CD with additional new songs, artwork and photographs of the band.Music observers said the British five-piece, which is no longer signed to a record label, is able to sell directly to its fans because it has such an establis ...

Down goes the Crew
2007-09-29 08:42:00
Well, it's finally over. The Milwaukee Brewers crapped away their chances at a postseason birth last night with a loss to the San Diego Padres and a win from the Chicago Cubs. It looks like my prediction that the Brew Crew would make the playoffs didn't hold true - but then again, I severely underestimated their ability to crap away the NL Central lead in such haste. On the bright side, the team is young and loaded and should be a favorite to compete for the NL Central or at least a wild card spot next year if they can shore up their bullpen. On top of having to deal with the Brewers season ending this weekend, we're also in the process of packing and moving. Not far, just up north to be closer to work. The 1 hour and 15 minute commute was too much for us to handle anymore, and with winter approaching, we thought it best to make the move. I'm not sure how quickly I'll be able to get access to internet, so look for the spareness in posting to continue. In the meantime, I do have a fe ...

The Minor Canon
2007-09-21 05:10:00
The Minor Canon is an indie rock band from Los Angeles, Calif.Gritty and melancholy, The Minor Canon's music is beautifully dirty and has been described as "honest to god stellar sad pop" (OC Weekly) and "Memphis soul on an indie bender" (Blackbook magazine). The Los Angeles Times named the band one of "10 to Watch in 2007" saying, "So there might not be much commercial potential in a seven-piece with a horn section, but the music is as heartfelt and as inventive as it gets."The Minor Canon began as the solo project of songwriter/singer/multi-instrumentalist Paul Larson (Strictly Ballroom, Dntel, Athalia), and has grown into a six-piece ensemble with a horn section, piano, organ, and, at times, two drummers. Larson’s guitar work can be heard on the much-anticipated new Dntel album (“Dumb Luck” on Sub Pop Records to be released in April), which also features Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes and Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley. The Minor Canon has shared the bill with acts such as Jose Gonza ...

500,000 music fans can't be wrong
2007-09-19 05:31:00
Within the next day or two, or maybe within the next couple hours, Veritas Lux Mea will see its 500,000th page view. Wow. What a long way we've come.I feel a little guilty that our half a millionth hit will come as the page views slowly drag in, thanks in part to the little amount of blogging I've been able to do lately, but you can't blame a guy for livin'. I've been pretty swamped these past couple weeks trying to close out a Fantasy Baseball championship, get my Fantasy Football leagues going, and trying to move on top of that. Maybe once we move and I'm not wasting 3 hours a day sitting in the car commuting I'll have some more time to sit down and write. We do hope you stick around because we've got lots of great things to share that are always flooding the inbox, and there will always be stories to pass along about this or that. We've got upcoming shows like the Imperial Teen concert in Minneapolis and the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! show in Madison to tell you about. And if ...

Business Week's Best Places to Launch a Career
2007-09-15 08:55:00
Accountants used to be spoofed as bean counters—dutiful, middle-aged, gray-suited men with considerable analytical expertise but little charisma. That was during the good times. After their uninspiring performances in the corporate scandals of recent years, accounting seemed like a profession without much of a future, and the firms certainly no place to launch a career. Scratch that. This year accountants became sexy. Accounting firms dominated BusinessWeek's second annual ranking of the best companies for new college graduates: Deloitte & Touche is No. 1, followed by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young. The last of the Big Four, KPMG, moved up four spots, to No. 11.Why did the accounting firms do so well? Enormous demand. Across industries, there is a mad scramble to recruit the best and brightest of a new generation, the much-maligned, heavily scrutinized Gen Y. Nowhere is the pressure more intense than in the Big Four. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act has so greatly increased ...

In High School Football, an Injury No One Sees
2007-09-15 08:47:00
Kelby Jasmon, left, like many high school teammates, said he would not tell his coach if he thought he had a concussion (credit: NYT).To Kelby Jasmon, there was only one answer. The question: If he received yet another concussion this football season, while playing offensive and defensive line for his high school in Springfield, Ill., would he tell a coach or trainer?Jasmon, with his battering-ram, freshly buzz-cut head and eyes that danced with impending glory, immediately answered: “No chance. It’s not dangerous to play with a concussion. You’ve got to sacrifice for the sake of the team. The only way I come out is on a stretcher.”Jasmon, a senior with three concussions on his résumé, looked at two teammates for support and unity. They said the same thing with the same certainty: They did not quite know what a concussion was, and would never tell their coaches if they believed they had sustained one.Matt Selvaggio, who plays with Jasmon on both lines, said: “Our coaches wo ...
