Wild Sweet Orange, Bon Iver
2007-11-01 19:14:00
Pretty rough day at the office, which doesn't happen too often, I suppose. Never thought I would get yelled at over the use of an ampersand, but today proved that point wrong. Guess that's one of the little nuggets of wisdom they forgot to mention in graduate school.Later this afternoon I was listening to some Harvard Business School podcast and they were discussing the Theater of Leadership and I couldn't help but smile...To unwind before The Office comes on, let's check out a few tunes holding residence in my inbox...Wild Sweet Orange Release EP, Sign to Canvasback Music"Listening to Wild Sweet Orange is a bit like looking back at your childhood, and out toward your future at the same time. Their music evokes at once a certain aching nostalgia and an uplifting hopefulness--all within the walls of a visceral, emotion-driven rock band. This is music that makes you feel something, music that makes you want to listen."The band will be releasing an EP called The Whale on their own ...

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu interview on NPQ
2007-10-31 21:25:00
Brad Pitt in BabelDiverging from the music for a bit....when it comes down to the nuts and bolts of cinema, I far prefer the work done and being done by Spanish and foreign filmmakers such as Alejandro González Iñárritu, the genius behind films such as Babel, 21 Grams and Amores Perros. Iñárritu spoke with NPQ editor Nathan Gardels in February on the subject "Hollywood Must Portray Point of View of Others." Here's a snippet of that interview for your reading pleasure.NPQ | What accounts for this fantastic eruption of cinematic talent from the Spanish-speaking world—yourself, Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth), Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) and the Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar (Volver)? How is it the same, how is it different, from the Latin boom in literature 30 years ago with Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Mario Vargas Llosa?Alejandro González Iñárritu | There is a very fortunate consonance, a beautiful coincidence, among the three of us from Mexic ...

Preview track from Big Change Compilation
2007-10-31 20:25:00
Happy Halloween ghouls and boys. It's pretty dissapointing when you only 3 people out of a department of 30 some dresses up for Halloween. I think I might work in the least creative Creative department in the world sometimes. Nonetheless, I dressed up as a rodeo clown...and you can bask in my self-deprecating humiliation for Halloween's sake above. What were you this year? When Natalie Portman's not busy getting naked for Wes Anderson or being Harvard-smart, she's out promoting great indie tunes for an equally great reason.ODA has teamed up with Natalie Portman to compile tracks for Big Change: Songs for FINCA. The 16-song benefit compilation will be available for digital download exclusively at the iTunes Store (www.itunes.com) beginning October 30th for $7.99. Net proceeds will benefit FINCA, a leading international microfinance organization that provides financial services to the world's lowest-income entrepreneurs, helping them to create jobs, build assets and improve their stan ...

The Besnard Lakes
2007-10-28 07:12:00
In support of their critically acclaimed avant-pop masterpiece "The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse" CD/LP, THE BESNARD LAKES will be spending late 2007 on tour with Sweden's PETER BJORN AND JOHN. It has been a magical year for The Besnard Lakes. They have toured both North America and Europe twice over, playing the most intimate rooms as well as on large festival stages where they've opened up for the likes of Smashing Pumpkins. They have been nominated for prestigious prizes, such as for the POLARIS PRIZE, recognizing the best Canadian album of the year, and the ECHO SONGWRITING PRIZE for their song "Devastation". And their album has been an underground success story, being deemed by Pitchfork as one of the excellent overlooked records this year and having garnered great praise from prominent print media outlets such as Mojo (4 star review; see below.) Likely to make it on many year-end "best of 2007" lists, the Besnard Lakes make one last splash with a few weeks on the road wit ...

The GoStation
2007-10-26 06:11:00
Looking to connect to the old days where Oasis was king and U2 was more powerful than the president? Then you might want to check out The GoStation. As the their Myspace page says, "Transporting listeners to a place where melody reigns, cultures clash and combine, and feedback fills the sky, The GoStation is a state of mind as much as a band. Hailing from New York City, this five-piece force is on a musical mission to restore rock to its rightful place: the hearts and minds of the people.Embracing the art of the anthem, The GoStation have willfully eschewed the structureless noise of many of their contemporaries, opting instead for epic compositions marked by masterful guitar interplay, a steady rhythmic punch, and huge sing-along choruses. Calling to mind everyone from Oasis to The Strokes by way of U2, the band are far more concerned with reviving the classic art of songwriting than becoming the darlings of any fickle scene. The GoStation fired the first shot from their arsenal with th ...

Beckett is cruising...but not with Sunday Drivers...
2007-10-24 19:59:00
First inning and Jeff Francis is already crumbling under the big lights. He should settle down as the game goes on, but he's got to get out of this inning with less than five runs first. In the meantime, I want you to check out Sunday Drivers, a 3 person outfit from Los Angeles, California.Filter Magazine describes Sunday Drivers as, "A danceable backbeat combines with airy synths to produce what The Killers might have gone on to do had they not become obsessed with Bruce Springsteen."We agree with the Killers reference, but don't sense that Las Vegas glitz and glamor like we do in the Killers. The Sunday Drivers seem a little more like an industrial Interpol, if you want to stick to the comparisons, but we certainly enjoy their track "The Sweetest Disguise." You can take a listen and decide for yourself below:Sunday Drivers - "The Sweet Disguise"Want to learn more about Sunday Drivers? Stop by their Myspace page and read all about them, as well as check out a video for "Endless Summe ...

2007-10-24 19:41:00
Los Campesinos! Set To Return To North AmericaBased out of Cardiff, Wales, the youthful septet known as Los Campesinos! announce their return to the U.S. this fall. They made their triumphant U.S. stage debut at the Lollapalooza Festival and continued a small tour in support of their EP Sticking Fingers Into Sockets which was released on Arts&Crafts in July. Response to the band has been nothing short of ecstatic on both sides of the Atlantic and the upcoming run of dates will be a treat for those who missed the opportunity this summer. Los Campesinos! christened the studio of producer Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene) when they stepped into his Stars & Sons recording space in September to lay the tracks for their upcoming full-length, expected out in early 2008. They also recently shot the video for their next UK single “The International Tweexcore Underground” which will be released October 22nd on Wichita Recordings.Los Campesinos has quickly found their way into th ...

World Series Kicks Off Tonight
2007-10-24 19:28:00
World Series Game 1 is about to kick off from Boston and the wife has gone to bed early, so it looks like it's just me and Joe Buck for the better part of the evening. If you're one of the few out there not interested in this year's Fall Classic, you can check in on the score at Sports Illustrated's game page for updates.Hopefully the upstart surprising Rockies give Boston everything they've got and perform better than the Boston Pops did during their Star Spangled Banner tonight. And since when was John Williams "the epitome of Boston" or Eric Byres worthy of joining anyone's pregame booth for anything other than to look like a party boy and take his dog surfing out into the ocean?Luckily all of this nonsense was already topped by Rudy Giuliani saying during a trip to Boston "I'm an American League fan, and I go with the American League team, maybe with the exception of the Mets. Maybe that would be the one time I wouldn't because I'm loyal to New York." What kind of New York ...

The 80's are finally over
2007-10-19 06:28:00
It's a sad day for the 80's today as Yahoo reports that Corey Feldman and Corey Haim are no longer friends."We are not in great shape these days," the former "Surreal Life" star told US Weekly."We had a bit of a falling out."The childhood friends recently reunited for an A&E reality show, "The Two Coreys." The program ended its run this past summer. Now, Feldman said, the two men have stopped speaking."No, we are not [talking] at all," Feldman said. "He made some big mistakes and I am not sure why he made them. I am a bit confused by it all. He has big issues."Feldman revealed that the two men haven't spoken in about two months."He has to get his life together," Feldman said. "He has some serious issues he must deal with. That's all I will say. He has to get it together very soon."In related news, the big screen reunion of the two Coreys is also apparently off. Haim did not take part in "Lost Boys 2: The Tribe." 2007-10-18 21:13:00
I'm just chilling here watching a great Thursday night of television (30 Rock, The Office, college football and MLB playoffs). Got to see Josh Beckett and Kenny Lofton almost come to blows in the ACLS championship series. But I'm also perusing the web as well and lucky I did because I was able to find quite the gem.If you haven't heard it yet, drop by Sucka Pants blog and check out Yeah Yeah Yeah's cover of Sonic Youth's "Diamond Sea." Absolutely beautiful.Back to baseball. Boston's up 2-1 in the bottom of the 5th, but Cleveland's got runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs.Wisconsin indie music blog featuring free mp3 downloads from today's top independent music artists, news, social commentary, political watercooler gossip, and concert reviews.

2007-10-18 06:22:00
Big college football game tonight at this year's Cinderella team, the #2 ranked University of South Florida will take on last year's girl at the ball, Rutgers.Rutgers has established themselves in the past couple years as a good football program, and the University of South Florida is quickly on its way to doing the same. South Florida still has a few challenges ahead of them, and has played not so great against a couple of less than average teams; however, they have played the 12th toughest schedule in the NCAA, and are still #2. Tonight's game should help determine whether or not their run at a dream season can continue. You can catch the game on ESPN tonight at 730 ET.Read a story about South Florida from ESPN's Joe Starkey here.Wisconsin indie music blog featuring free mp3 downloads from today's top independent music artists, news, social commentary, political watercooler gossip, and concert reviews.
